When Meyer was at Utah, he referred to BYU as the "school down south". That's just part of his shtick, and has nothing to do with Hoke referring to OSU as "Ohio".Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2440694009017367434.post-42329682315546651272012-04-16T12:39:15.431-04:002012-04-16T12:39:15.431-04:00This is silly. It just expresses a healthy disdain for your opponent. All in good fun.

Meyer would have sounded stupid if he used TSUN before he was the coach. Just because he would have hypothetically coached for Michigan doesn't mean he owes us any more respect than any other opponent.

I think the whole "Ohio" and "that school up north" things are blown out of proportion. I think you (and others) might be taking the Twitterspeak of a 17-year-old kid a little too seriously. Not that you're getting totally bent out of shape about it, but honestly...why would anyone care that he said "that school up north"? It has virtually no significance except maybe it's a hint that he likes OSU more than Michigan.Thunderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09708792562446136381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2440694009017367434.post-37630434842105289602012-04-16T11:56:47.775-04:002012-04-16T11:56:47.775-04:00Agree with your take 100%, Virginia, but more impo...Agree with your take 100%, Virginia, but more importantly, Ohio's recruiting coordinator is named Mark Pantoni? He's a pretty active twitter user and he seemed to be goading the argument along knowing that Michigan fans were just blowing their chances at landing him with every tweet. That, and when Michigan was having their amazing recruiting weekend with 8 commitments he felt the need to hop on twitter and make a comment about how slow and steady wins the race to undermine a bit what they were accomplishing.

I disagree that it wasn't a mistake though, Ohio fans clearly use it to signal a lack of respect and good feeling toward Michigan. I'm sure the Ohio staff was aware that he was headed to Michigan next and had probably made a joke referring to it by that name, and for him to repeat it just seems a bit disrespectful. Like I said, the fan reaction was out of proportion, but when he's still in a portion of his recruitment where Michigan is courting him and he is courting the school, it just seems like a misstep on his part.Virginia Blueshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04906908498473536705noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2440694009017367434.post-5637720137427818992012-04-16T09:55:12.433-04:002012-04-16T09:55:12.433-04:00If I'm not mistaken, the "school up north...If I'm not mistaken, the "school up north" thing is older than many of this blog's readers are. I'm pretty sure that was the way Woody Hayes referenced Michigan, and it might have even started before him. There was that old story that Hayes's car ran out of gas across the state line, and he pushed his car across back into Ohio so he could buy his gas in OH rather than giving money to Michigan. The hatred between the two schools is much older than Urban Meyer, obviously.Thunderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09708792562446136381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2440694009017367434.post-25217749328020934162012-04-16T09:49:35.414-04:002012-04-16T09:49:35.414-04:00The "school up north" thing really does&...The "school up north" thing really does't bother me. It feels forced from Meyer feeling he has to respond to "Ohio" from Hoke. Except Hoke was doing it from the start and Meyer didn't start until after he was hired. He certainly shouldn't have called a school he was about to visit by the nickname used by its rival as he came off a visit to it, but worse than that was the fan reaction. Michigan football is your hobby. It may not feel like it at times, but it is nothing more than a hobby. On the other hand, for a prospect like him, football has a great deal to do with his life, and his decisions ultimately might affect a good portion of his life. The fans need to lay off sometimes.

But the real news in all of this is that OSU's recruiting director Mark Pantoni is a massive douche.Virginia Blueshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04906908498473536705noreply@blogger.com
