The ground is is hard-scrabble gravel and sand, the plants are all scrub bushes with scattered cactus, and it goes on forever.

9 years living here and it's still like living on the moon for a Michigan boy like me.

Which is why, I think, Arizona can get recruits from southern California (also mostly desert) but it has a harder time pulling kids from the lush greenery of the southeast. The desert southwest is just too foreign to the eye.DonAZnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2440694009017367434.post-19989202826370353982014-02-03T09:22:08.909-05:002014-02-03T09:22:08.909-05:00Excellent piece on the Granite mountain hotshots.
...Excellent piece on the Granite mountain hotshots.

"The Friday storm, the first of the monsoon season, ignited at least seven fires in central Arizona, including the one on the ridge west of Yarnell. Those slopes and canyons hadn't burned since 1966, so they were thick with chaparral, in places ten feet high and impassably dense and all of it desiccated by years of drought."

Exactly why you harvest timber where it has commercial value and control burn where it doesn't. Indians understood this, why doesn't 17 or so federal agencies responsible for maintaining public real estate?

Way too many inbred Ivy Leaguers ..... IMO.

http://townhall.com/columnists/hsterlingburnett/2013/07/25/government-fiddles-our-nations-forests-burn-n1648185/page/fullRoanmanhttp://justthinking.usnoreply@blogger.com
