Michigan's NFL Draft History

Cesar Ruiz

Probably like many of you, I occasionally have a hankering for some Michigan NFL Draft history. Below you will find (as far as I'm aware) every pro draft pick in the history of Michigan's football program going all the way back to 1937.

A few little factoids:

  • Michigan's only two #1 overall NFL Draft picks are Jake Long in 2008 and Tom Harmon in 1941.
  • Michigan set a record in 2017 with 11 total draft picks.

18 Michigan Players Participating in 2024 NFL Combine

Zak Zinter

The following 18 Michigan football players are participating in the 2024 NFL Combine. That's a record number of players invited to the Combine for any school. They are:

  1. QB J.J. McCarthy
  2. RB Blake Corum
  3. WR Cornelius Johnson
  4. WR Roman Wilson
  5. TE A.J. Barner
  6. OL Karsen Barnhart
  7. OL La'Darius Henderson
  8. OL Trente Jones
  9. OL Trevor Keegan
  10. OL Drake Nugent
  11. OL Zak Zinter
  12. EDGE Jaylen Harrell
  13. EDGE Braiden McGregor
  14. DT Kris Jenkins, Jr.
  15. LB Michael Barrett
  16. LB Junior Colson
  17. CB Mike Sainristil
  18. CB Josh Wallace

Over 300 players were invited to the Combine, and last year 259 players were drafted. So mathematically, not every player invited will end up being selected. But if everyone gets drafted, that would set a record for the most players drafted from a school in one year. The current record is 15, which was set by Georgia.

Former Michigan players TE Erick All (Iowa), QB Joe Milton (Tennessee), and EDGE Eyabi Okie-Anoma (Charlotte) will also be at the Combine, as will former Michigan signee WR Xavier Worthy (Texas).

LaMar Morgan, Wolverine

LaMar Morgan

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore hired Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns defensive coordinator LaMar Morgan to be the defensive backs coach for the Wolverines. Morgan spent the past two seasons as the Ragin' Cajuns defensive play caller. He replaces safeties coach Jay Harbaugh (Seattle Seahawks) and cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale (Los Angeles Chargers).

Morgan played at Louisiana, so to pull him away from his alma mater - for a "demotion" to a position coach role - is somewhat significant. He made 111 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 9 pass breakups through his career playing safety, which wrapped up in 2007. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Vanderbilt under James Franklin from 2013-2014 before spending two seasons as the defensive backs coach at FCS Western Carolina. For the 2016 and 2017 seasons, he was hired as the Louisiana-Monroe defensive backs coach. He then spent one season as the defensive backs coach at Houston before returning to Louisiana-Lafayette from 2019-2020 as defensive backs coach. He worked as the cornerbacks coach at Vanderbilt in 2021 before going back to ULL for the 2022-2023 seasons.

If the past is any indication, Morgan will not be at Michigan any longer than two seasons. Louisiana-Lafayette also went from #13 in yards per play allowed in 2021 - when Morgan was coaching corners at Vanderbilt - to #24 in 2022 and #47 in 2023. Those two seasons were the first two after then-rising star Billy Napier left to be the head coach at Florida, so there has been an overall dropoff in that program.

Morgan's expertise as a play caller may be in question, but he did coach under Jesse Minter in 2021 when Minter was the defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt, so he should be able to slide in pretty smoothly as a helper for new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. This past season his defense ranked #26 nationally in interceptions, and they ranked #14 in 2022.

Morgan is from Texas and has spent much of his career in the South, so it would make sense to have him recruit down there. Michigan doesn't historically have a ton of success recruiting places like Louisiana or Texas, but they're hotbeds of talent, so it makes sense to try. Interestingly, Michigan now has two Louisiana connections on staff with Morgan and wide receivers coach Ronald Bellamy; the former spent a ton of time coaching there, and Bellamy grew up there.

Michigan's staff is now completed, though there remain some questions about running backs coach Mike Hart, who has been on a leave of absence recently:

  • HC: Sherrone Moore
  • OC/QB: Kirk Campbell
  • RB: Mike Hart
  • WR: Ronald Bellamy
  • TE: Steve Casula
  • OL: Grant Newsome
  • DC: Wink Martindale
  • DL: Greg Scruggs
  • LB: Brian Jean-Mary
  • DB: LaMar Morgan
  • STC: J.B. Brown

Jack Tuttle receives 7th year of eligibility

Jack Tuttle

Quarterback Jack Tuttle has received a seventh year of eligibility. Tuttle originally signed with Utah before ultimately playing the first five years of his career at Indiana. He then transferred to Michigan in 2023, along with tight end teammate A.J. Barner.

Tuttle began the 2023 season as a third-stringer, but as he learned the playbook, he moved up the depth chart and became the primary backup to starter J.J. McCarthy. Down the stretch Michigan used Alex Orji as a running threat in the College Football Playoff, but Orji did not attempt a pass all season.

Tuttle completed 15/17 passes for 130 yards and 1 touchdown last year. For his college career, he has completed 119/199 passes (59.8%) for 1,031 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. He has also run 54 times for 114 yards.

Injuries have been an issue for Tuttle over his career - thus the granting of a seventh year - and he has only played in 22 games over six seasons. While it might make sense to pencil him in as Michigan's starter in 2024, considering he was the top backup, there are perhaps better physical specimens on the roster. Orji has a stronger arm but much less experience. Jayden Denegal also has much less experience, but at 6'4" and 235 pounds, he also brings a size element that the 6'4", 210 lb. Tuttle doesn't possess.

It's also still possible that Michigan will explore the transfer portal when the portal opens in mid-April.

Depth chart by experience:

  • Jack Tuttle (Seventh Year Senior)
  • Davis Warren (RS Jr.)
  • Jayden Denegal (RS So.)
  • Alex Orji (RS So.)
  • Jadyn Davis (Fr.)

2025 Recruiting Update: February 22, 2024

Cartersville (GA) Cartersville WR Jamauri Brice (image via QB Hit List)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2025

Cartersville (GA) Cartersville wide receiver Jamauri Brice was offered by Michigan. He's a 5'9", 180 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia and Oregon, among others. As a junior in 2023, he caught 34 passes for 530 yards and 5 touchdowns. He is currently unranked.

Phenix City (AL) Central offensive guard Mal Waldrep (3-star, #40 OT, #450 overall) was offered by Michigan. He's a 6'5", 290-pounder with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, and Georgia, among others. Waldrep also spent some time living in Georgia before moving to Alabama. Phenix City Central is the alma mater of Michigan receiver Karmello English.

Brookline (MA) Dexter offensive tackle Hardy Watts (4-star, #14 IOL, #236 overall) was offered by Michigan. He's a 6'6", 290 lb. prospect with offers from Duke, Penn State, Texas A&M, and Virginia, among others.

Keon Sabb, Ex-Wolverine

Keon Sabb

Rising redshirt sophomore safety Keon Sabb entered the transfer portal last week and, as of this weekend, has found a destination at Alabama.

Sabb was a member of the class of 2022, and I gave him a TTB Rating of 84 at the time of his commitment (LINK). He was a 4-star, the #9 safety, and #84 overall in his class. He was listed at 6'1" and 208 lbs. this past season and played a key role on Michigan's defense, starting five games and making 28 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 2 interceptions (returned 56 yards, including for 1 touchdown), and breaking up 7 passes. That came after a freshman season where he played in just four total games.

Sabb was going to be a key part of Michigan's secondary once again in 2024, but both Rod Moore and Makari Paige are returning to Michigan. Moore and Paige were somewhat expected to announce for the NFL after this past season, and Sabb surely would have slipped in there at one of the safety positions. But with both returning, there's a good chance that Sabb would have been squeezed for playing time once again. He would have played, but how much?

Now Michigan has to hope that another young defensive back can step up. For whatever reason, the defensive backfield has been hurt by transfers this off-season, including cornerbacks Amorion Walker (Ole Miss) and Cam Calhoun (Utah). The next guys in line to play more would likely be third-year guy Zeke Berry or second-year player Brandyn Hillman.

As for Sabb's future, he will likely play a starting role, especially since Alabama lost Caleb Downs to Ohio State in free agency. It's just a little odd that Sabb will be playing for a team (Alabama) Michigan beat in the Rose Bowl and for a coach (former Washington head man Kalen DeBoer) whom Michigan beat in the national championship game.

Michigan has previously offered Sabb's two younger brothers in 2026 safety Amari Sabb and 2027 athlete Xavier Sabb.

Keon Sabb is the sixth member of the 2022 class to transfer, joining Walker, WR Darrius Clemons (Oregon State), S Damani Dent (Charlotte), LB Deuce Spurlock (Florida), and RB C.J. Stokes (Charlotte).

Brian Jean-Mary, Wolverine...again

Brian Jean-Mary

Brian Jean-Mary has been hired as Michigan's linebackers coach. He was previously at Michigan in 2020.

Jean-Mary joined the Jacksonville Jaguars staff in 2021 to coach under Urban Meyer and then spent 2022-2023 as Tennessee's linebackers coach. He had previously been at Louisville (2010-2013), Texas (2014-2016), USF (2017-2019), and a few other schools.

Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore was on the same staff as Jean-Mary at Louisville; Moore was a graduate assistant and tight ends coach from 2009-2013, and Jean-Mary was the linebackers coach from 2010-2013. They were also on staff together at Michigan in 2020, when Jean-Mary coached linebackers and when Moore was the tight ends coach.

Jean-Mary will turn 49 later this year but has a ton of experience. He's known as an ace recruiter, and he has also been an assistant head coach (Louisville) and defensive coordinator (USF). While he may not be defensive coordinator material for Michigan down the road, he obviously has the capability of understanding how his linebackers fit into a defensive system.

Michigan now has just one staff place to complete hiring: defensive backs coach Stephen Adegoke may or may not be coming over from the Houston Texans.

Greg Scruggs, Wolverine

Greg Scruggs (image via Bucky's 5th Quarter)

Michigan has reportedly hired Wisconsin Badgers defensive line coach Greg Scruggs to replace Mike Elston as the defensive line coach.

Scruggs is a former Louisville football player (2008-2011) who spent five seasons in the NFL with the Seahawks, Bears, and Patriots after being selected in the 7th round of the 2012 draft. He then went on to be the Director of Player Development at Cincinnati in 2018-2019 and then coach their defensive line in 2020-2021. He got a job with the New York Jets as an assistant defensive line coach in 2022 and then returned to college football for 2023, working once again with head coach Luke Fickell, whom he had previously served at Cincinnati.

Scruggs is known as a very good recruiter; he landed two 4-star defensive linemen in the 2024 class, including Michigan target Ernest Willor, Jr. And when he was at Cincinnati, he landed former Michigan commit Mario Eugenio. I think his player development is still a question mark, as zero Badgers defensive linemen earned All-Big Ten honors in 2023. He has been a part of some solid defenses at both Cincinnati and Wisconsin, but it's not clear to me how much that has to do with his development of talent and how much has to do with other aspects of those programs.

Regardless, Michigan seems to have done a pretty good job with this hire. Scruggs's recruiting abilities might offset the expected recruiting shortcomings of defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, and Scruggs has plenty on his resume - including two Super Bowl rings, one with the Seahawks and one with the Patriots - to command some respect when he walks into the room.

Coaching staff as of now:

  • HC: Sherrone Moore
  • OC/QB: Kirk Campbell
  • RB: Mike Hart
  • WR: Ronald Bellamy
  • TE: Steve Casula
  • OL: Grant Newsome
  • DC: Wink Martindale
  • DL: Greg Scruggs
  • LB: Brian Jean-Mary (expected)
  • DB: Stephen Adegoke (expected)
  • STC: J.B. Brown

Steve Casula, Wolverine

Steve Casula

Michigan has hired Steve Casula to coach the tight ends, replacing Grant Newsome, who moved from tight ends to coaching the offensive line.

Casula spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator at UMass under former Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown, who is the head coach for the Minutemen.

UMass was #118 in yards per play before he arrived in 2021; they then dropped to #130 in 2022 but jumped to #59 in 2023. Surely some of that jump had to do with the transfer portal, where the Minutemen benefited from former Clemson/Georgia Tech QB Taisun Phommachanh, former Rutgers RB Kay'Ron Adams, former Arizona WR Anthony Simpson, and former Michigan WR George Johnson III, among others. But that's still an impressive leap in the span of one season.

Casula is being brought in to coach the tight ends, which he's overqualified to do. He's spent a good amount of time as an offensive coordinator (Davenport from 2014-2016; Ferris State from 2017-2018; UMass from 2022-2023) and even served as interim head coach at Davenport. One of his proteges as a coordinator/quarterback coach was former Detroit (MI) Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell, who won the Harlon Hill Trophy for being the most outstanding player in Division II back in 2018.

Casula was an analyst at Michigan from 2019-2021, so he's familiar with the area and the program. He should be able to hit the ground running, and there's no reason to think that Michigan's tight ends won't continue to be successful.

Michigan's coaching staff as of today:

  • HC: Sherrone Moore
  • OC/QB: Kirk Campbell
  • RB: Mike Hart
  • WR: Ronald Bellamy
  • TE: Steve Casula
  • OL: Grant Newsome
  • DC: Wink Martindale
  • DL: ???
  • LB: ???
  • DB: ???

2025 Recruiting Update: February 12, 2024

Covina (CA) Charter Oak linebacker LaVar Arrington II (image via 247 Sports)

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2025

Covina (CA) Charter Oak linebacker LaVar Arrington II (3-star, #52 ATH, #587 overall) was offered by Michigan. He's a 6'4", 215 lb. edge rusher with offers from Penn State, Tennessee, UCLA, and Washington, among others. His dad is, of course, former Penn State and NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington, who was the #2 overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. He made 417 career tackles, 23.5 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 1 touchdown, but his career was cut short by a motorcycle accident.

Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei cornerback Daryus Dixson (4-star, #9 CB, #74 overall) was offered by Michigan. He's a 6'0", 180-pounder with offers from Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, and USC, among others.

Denton (TX) Ryan offensive tackle Marcus Garcia (4-star, #30 OT, #330 overall) was offered by Michigan. He's a 6'5", 265 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, among others.

Hit the jump for more.

Joey Velazquez, Ex-Wolverine

Joey Velazquez

Michigan linebacker Joey Velazquez has left the program and will play for Ohio State as a walk-on going forward.

Velazquez entered the transfer portal after the season, which was not particularly surprising. Since entering the program in 2019, Velazquez had played in just 20 games over that span (0 in 2023) with 8 tackles and 1 fumble recovery during that stretch.

Velazquez was a 3-star, the #86 safety, and #1024 overall in the class of 2019. He was recruited by Don Brown for the "Viper" position that no longer exists in Michigan's defense. At 6'0" and 222 pounds, he fits the athletic shape of a Viper, but he never fit in to Michigan's defense as it's been since 2021. Doubling as a baseball player, he had a better career on the diamond than he did on the gridiron at Michigan.

However, it appears that Velazquez will not play baseball at Ohio State and will instead focus on football, which is odd since he's very inexperienced for a rising sixth year senior. Perhaps he just wants to be closer to home and perhaps hop on board for a potential national championship with the Buckeyes, who have spent a bunch of money to make some roster upgrades this off-season.

Velazquez is the first football player to transfer to Ohio State since defensive lineman Chris Rock left the Wolverines following the 2012 season and played for the Buckeyes from 2013-2014. But probably the most famous departure was offensive lineman Justin Boren, who ditched Michigan during the Lloyd Carr-to-Rich Rodriguez transition.

This does not affect Michigan for 2024, since Velazquez was not expected to play much of a role and was already a fifth year senior.

Wink Martindale, Wolverine

Wink Martindale (image via On3)

Former Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale has been hired as Michigan's new defensive coordinator.

At 60 years old, Martindale has too long of a coaching history to run down. But as a native of Ohio, he went on to play at Defiance and then spent time coaching at Western Kentucky in the early 2000s, winning a DI-AA (now FCS) national championship as the defensive coordinator under Jack Harbaugh in 2002. He would go on to become the Oakland Raiders linebackers coach in 2004 and has been in the NFL ever since, spending time with the Raiders, Denver Broncos, Ravens, and then Giants.

Hit the jump for more.

Tuesday, February 6, 2024

Mike Elston, Ex-Wolverine

Mike Elston

Defensive line coach Mike Elston is reportedly on the way to Los Angeles to coach the Chargers defensive line under Jim Harbaugh. Elston has been Michigan's DL coach and recruiting coordinator since being hired away from Notre Dame prior to the 2022 season.

Elston is a former Michigan player who had some great success securing commitments from some quality defensive linemen and helping develop some players into studs, including Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. Even guys like Rayshaun Benny and Cam Goode showed solid improvement in 2023, not to mention edge defenders like Jaylen Harrell, Josaiah Stewart, and Derrick Moore.

The rumor mill has been going about Elston, who reportedly has had an offer on the table from the Chargers for a while but was still out on the road recruiting for Michigan recently. The hope was that he would stay on board to keep recruiting and help Sherrone Moore transition into the next era of Michigan football. Unfortunately, that seems not to be the case.

This is a big loss for Michigan. Not bigger than Harbaugh. Not bigger than Jesse Minter. And probably not bigger than Herbert. But it's a significant blow to a program whose identity has been built in the trenches, both on offense and defense. It was Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo setting the tone in 2021 - which was admittedly pre-Elston - and then Mazi Smith, Graham, Grant, Harrell, and others in 2022 and 2023. The interior pass rush improved in 2023, which made up for the fact that Michigan didn't have truly elite rushers coming off the edge. Now you really have to wonder how strong the pull will be for guys to enter the transfer portal if they're losing their head coach, their defensive line coach, and their strength coach while also being tampered with and offered hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The lone defensive holdout on the staff is co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale, who seems to be an option as defensive coordinator . . . but could also follow Harbaugh to the Chargers. Meanwhile, Michigan is reportedly also pursuing Kansas City Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen, former Baltimore Ravens/New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, and New York Giants inside linebackers coach John Egorugwu, among others.

The current coaching staff as things stand today:

  1. HC: Sherrone Moore
  2. OC/QB: Kirk Campbell
  3. RB: Mike Hart
  4. WR: Ronald Bellamy
  5. TE: Steve Casula
  6. OL: Grant Newsome
  7. DC: ???
  8. DL: ???
  9. LB: ???
  10. CB: Steve Clinkscale
