2011 Final Countdown

Hooray!  It's finally over.  The countdown was a lot of fun to do, but it took a ton of time.  That's 89 consecutive days of player profiles.  Now that football season has started, it took some serious devotion to churn out these last several profiles between practice, work, and plain old real life.  I hope you enjoyed it.  In order to celebrate, here's a picture of a hot girl named Ari Brugh:

  1. Ha. I assumed you were writing some of these in advance. I mean...how much can you say about Keith Heitzman's importance to the team? You should write-up Martin and Denard around that time. Keep up the good work.

  2. Gotta love Mike Cox at 24 and Vincent Smith at 43.

    Damn man.

  3. Nice not to see number 1 with a line through it, like last year [knock on wood, knock on wood].

  4. #1 did not have a line through it last year. Woolfolk was #2. Molk was #1.

  5. Damn. Six dudes gone from the program in just three months.

  6. Great work on this. As others said, it really helped the offseason pass, and was something I looked forward to every day, thanks.

I know you're big on making predictions so that you can go back and see how right or wrong you were after the season. Perhaps you should consider an after season re-ranking (similar to what Adam Rittenberg does on ESPN). Maybe not an extensive write-up on every player like this, but just a reminder of where they were pre-season and a sentence or two about how they did or did not live up to those expectations.

  7. Thanks for the effort. It made TTB a daily stop once I figured out what the numbers meant (joined the countdown in the 70s, I think).

If you'll notice, Magnus does this a year later when he does the Countdown again. Every entry has a blurb about where he ranked them last year and what they did.

  10. Also, you asked for discussion. It seems to me, with the benefit of hindsight (if there is such a thing two days before the season starts), that the following players are the most underrated:

    Unranked: Brink
    78. Desmond Morgan
    76. Brendan Gibbons (uh, oh)
    54. Will Heiniger
    53. Fitzgerald Toussaint
    36. Thomas Gordon

And the following the most overranked:
    12. Carvin Johnson (behind T. Gordon)
    15. BWC (unfortunately, though his ranking is probably fair, he just already underperformed)
    21. Drew Dileo (not starting PR or KR)
    24. Mike Cox (not mentioned for starting RB)
    26. Marell Evans (looks like a special teamer)

Note: I'm not including Koger on my "overranked" list in spite of my previous comments on him, as his circumstances have not changed. My argument was based on a differing opinion on which criteria should weigh the highest as a basis for this ranking. I'm also not including players who have been suspended (Hagerup) or left the team.
