Video: LeCharles Bentley working with Kyle Kalis

  1. What do you think of Kalis' ability to play early? In this video it seems like there are things that he needs to work on.

Are the things being taught in this video universal? Or is he gonna be taught completely new things when he gets to Michigan. I understand Funk might have a different way of teaching it, but are the fundamentals universal for the OL?

    1. Kalis is the most college ready offensive lineman I've seen come to Michigan since I started following recruiting. I think he's better than Justin Boren was as a freshman. There are things that every player needs to work on. These are some pretty minute nuances that Bentley is discussing and working on with Kalis. Keep in mind that Bentley is a former All-Pro NFL lineman, so he's got a lot of knowledge to pass on.

Funamentals for pass protection are more universal than for run blocking, I think. The stuff you see on the video is pretty standard, regardless of the coach or the system. Run blocking differs from team to team based on hand placement, initial steps, etc.

    2. I've had the same thought about Kalis. He is very developed for a freshman and I expect him to play a fair amount this year. He is better looking than Boren and Schilling, who both played early. The coaches are apparently looking at Kalis as a back-up OT, but that LG spot is just screaming for him. Hopefully, Magnusson and one of the other freshman earn Funk's confidence at OT, allowing for flexibility with Kalis.

Impressive that Bentley is in such good shape. He was a fairly sloppy looking player in his day. Usually, those guys blow up after retiring.

  2. I actually think the opposite happens. They tend to drop alot of weight and look like a completely different person. It's not healthy living as a 320lb man and they know it.

    1. It all depends on the guy. Some keep eating a lot but don't work out, and they get fat. Some keep working out and change their diet, and they end up losing weight. Either way, Bentley looks like he's in better shape than most ex-offensive linemen.

  3. The difference in foot speed between Bentley and Kalis is pretty amazing. It gives an idea of the amount of progress he's going to have to make to be an NFL caliber LT. I'm pumped to see him make that progress and shut down Adolphus Washington for a couple years. Nice to see that he's putting in the work and seeking out great coaching during the offseason. I know that his strength was his run blocking, so do you think he has the pass blocking skills to get some play at RT right away?

    1. No, I don't. I think Kalis will be a guard.
