2013 Season Countdown: #89 Csont'e York

Csont'e York (image via Rivals)
Name: Csont'e York
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 190 lbs.
High school: Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park
Position: Wide receiver
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: York was a senior in high school. I gave him a TTB Rating of 76.

York committed to Michigan last spring as a very under-the-radar prospect.  He was not garnering a lot of recruiting hype, but he had the height and the frame that Brady Hoke and his staff have been coveting.  Chandler Park Academy doesn't get a whole lot of press coverage, so it was a bit difficult to follow his senior year, but the vibe seemed to be that he made some spectacular catches but lollygagged at times.  Speed is not his best quality and competition is relatively poor, so there weren't many jaw-dropping highlights.

York seems to be one who will need a considerable deal of coaching to get on par with the college game, and he's not the type of elite athlete who can just wow his way onto the field.  Freshman receivers can often contribute, but Michigan has three in this class, and my guess is that he's the most likely to bide his time on the bench.  If he does get on the field, it will probably be on a limited basis where he ends up with no more than 1 reception in garbage time.

Prediction: Redshirt

  1. This truly concerns me Thunder. Does he warrant a scholarship or not? I am personally not an advocate of giving out a slot to someone just because we need the body when that body would in most cases not even see the field except for garbage time during his tenure here (I understand freshmen needs Redshirting more often than not, and some players need longer to develop). However, are you saying, that until Harris, he was the best we could get? We've spent three years in the Rich Rodriquez era where we were picking up dreck for players, but I was hoping that we've moved on from that and would sign at least solid prospects. Thanks.

    1. Well, I gave him a TTB Rating of 76, so I think he's a solid prospect. He's just not ready right now, in my opinion.

Yeah, tell that to Taylor Lewan and Denard Robinson. If you want to go big-picture and look at whole classes, pay close attention to the 2014 NFL draft. There's a good chance it will be the best one for Michigan since about '07.

Staying with the big picture, you can make a case that UM has been picking up "dreck for players" since the '04 recruiting class. '05 through '08 (and part of '09) were disasters in terms of NFL talent. Tell how many of those classes were due to RichRod.

    1. The inherent point in that question is a concern about giving out a scholarship to someone that seems as though they won't come off the bench. Your opinion is highly respected, so when you say things like, "..my guess is that he's the most likely to bide his time on the bench" and "...will probably be on a limited basis where he ends up with no more than 1 reception in garbage time" a red flag of concern goes up and I ask, "Why give him or anyone like that a scholarship?" Now I would imagine that Hoke and company may not agree with your assessment which would explain the scholarship offers, however, I respect your opinion and so I asked the question.

Therefore, relatively speaking when Michigan can sign a boat load of top Offensive linemen, a top running back last year, and a top DB this year; the question seeking understanding is "What does this mean?" Yes, RichRod brought in several exceptional players, but overall he brought in more players that seemed to be MAC level performers; and yes so did Carr I'm sure. My concern is that we don't go back to that practice. So this is an honest question, I am asking for clarification.

    2. Anonymous 6:00 P.M.:

Your question is a good one. I think Thunder means "1 reception in garbage time" as a ceiling for *next* year. I did not get the sense that he believes Csonte will _never_ leave the bench.

As for the RichRod comment, in the post of 12:43 I saw what appeared to be yet another example of the binary thinkers ("Lloyd good! RichRod bad!" or "RichRod good! Lloyd bad!") that infest even good sites like this one and MGoBlog. Had you said something like "tail end of Lloyd's years up through the end of RichRod's years" the first time it would have been more palatable.

You are correct that I'm talking about 1 reception/not leaving the bench for the 2013 season. Since this is a 2013 Season Countdown and not a 2013-2017 Countdown, I thought that was implied.

  3. York earned his fulled ride by hitting the camp circuit where he showed very good hands, the ability to get open and make tough catches. While certain positions are tough to evaluate in a camp setting, WR is not one of those. While he likely won't be a star, he has enough ability and size to be a soild contributor down the line.

  4. The coaches clearly had a tough sell at WR the last couple of classes. When you barely pass for 2000 yards, its tough to reel in top WRs. Sure, they'd love big and fast WRs, but so does everyone. Even this year, outside of Harris, other top WRs still seem a bit hesitant. Hopefully Gardner has a monster year and everyone sees what the ideal Michigan offense will be.

  5. That seem to be a harsh assessment of York. He has the potential to be a solid chain mover as a possession receiver. I guess the author thinks he would struggle in the MAC, not to even mention the B1G.

    1. "I guess the author thinks he would struggle in the MAC, not to even mention the BIG."

This is patently false. Read the whole post, and take some time to understand it before you leap to silly conclusions.

  6. This is a rather harsh assessment of York. He should be a solid possession receiver who can move the chains and be a weapon in the RZ. The author makes it seem like the guy would struggle in the MAC, not to mention the B1G.

  8. Reading comprehension seems to be taking a hit here. The last sentence was clearly taken out of context since the preceding one leads off with "Freshman receivers". Secondly, look at his TTB rating of 76 and compare that to some of the over the top comments.

  9. Yeah, this ain't the commit post, people.

That said, I also think it's a little pessimistic just because one of the freshman is likely to play at WR this season. It may indeed not be York, and I would agree he is the least ready-sounding of the freshman receiver, but that's mostly guess-work. The opportunity is there and come August York will get a good shot to play.
