  1. Well, we just lost Damien Harris. My God. After securing two of the very best players for 2015 (#1 WR and #1 RB), we lost both. If this is not what having a poor season does to a program, I don't know what else. I wonder what people who said winning has nothing to do with recruiting think about this one. Argh!

    1. The sun will come up tomorrow.

The 2013 season may have had something to do with this, or it may not. Both of those recruits (Campbell, Harris) committed early and based on an emotional high. Emotions fade and so too does the strength of the commitment. If there's a lesson to be learned here it is this -- don't put too much stock in early commitments.

I am FAR less concerned about this bit of new, and far MORE interested in the trend signaled by the hire of Nussmeier. It's not just Nussmeier, it's what it says about Hoke's outlook on how he'll run this business. He brought Borges along with him from SDSU and probably should not have; but having recognized the problem he took the necessary steps to correct it. And not timidly, but boldly. I sense 2014 will be a year where we'll see the program regain its footing.

    2. suduri: "I wonder what people who said winning has nothing to do with recruiting think about this one" is more exaggeration on your part. Nobody has ever said that.

    3. Actually Campbell decomitted because his Uncle wanted him to rethink the process and possibly pick a school closer to home, and Damien Harris decommitted mainly because Coach Borges was fired, and because he just wants to make the right choice. Neither have anything to do with winning.

    4. No one ever said that, and I think you're getting too emotional over someone who just got his driver's license. Harris even said that Michigan is still #1, so there's that.

    5. Well, a quite of few people did told me that I am nuts and called me names for saying winning matters a great deal in recruiting. So...

    6. I really don't think that's true. And besides, what you said at 3:53 is different than what you said at 1:10. You're already softening your statement. The bottom line is that you're exaggerating, and that's not a becoming quality.

    7. You analyzing my tones? Aren't "winning matters a great in recruiting" and "winning has nothing to do with recruiting" saying opposite things? And what is "a becoming quality"?

    8. I'm not going to get into a silly argument with you. It would be appreciated if you would tone down the exaggeration, overreaction, etc. That's all I have to say on the matter.

    9. Well, I wasn't the one who started arguing with you. I respect your opinion re: football a great deal, and that's why I frequent this blog amongst other places. You may see it as an overreaction, and I am too much of a sucker for M football. But I had a bunch of people calling me names for making a connection with winning and recruiting, so...

    10. Suduri, no one was calling you names, and saying that you're too much of a sucker for Michigan football is not a good excuse. No one wants to argue with you, it's not fun to get into stupid arguments over such, but you appear to set yourself up for such with some of the comments and replies you make. It's good that you love Michigan so much, but really, how old are you? We're all Michigan fans here, let's try to eliminate the little side arguments.

    11. Yeah, I don't want to get into stupid arguments with you, Anonymous. Keep your questions about me to yourself.

    12. I do believe winning helps recruiting. If we won more this year, Borges wouldn't got fired, then Harris would be staying. Also, remember what Hand said during his commitment to Alabama, he said if you want to be a champion, why not Alabama. If his choice was left only Bama and Michigan, then it's because Bama was winning, the Wolverines were not. I do believe winning helps recruiting, it just depends on the degree affecting each prospect.

      Delete
    13. I don't think there's any doubt that quality is a function of team performance on the field. But it's a more complex function than simply one year's win/loss record. It's a combination of a lot of things, winning being one part.

To the degree Michigan has a recruiting problem -- which I'm not sure it has a problem; and if so, there are LOTS of teams that would LOVE to have the quality of players generated by our problem -- it's more the erratic nature of 2013 than the final W-L record.

2013 was an ugly season because it revealed an almost incoherent offensive philosophy. Honestly, nobody had a clue what Michigan team would show up. Good Michigan showed up for Ohio State; bad Michigan showed up for Kansas State. Good for ND; bad for MSU.

It's about perceived trend lines ... trending up, flat or down. Sadly, the 2013 season contributed to a sense of the program trending aimlessly, with a potential for collapse in most games. To the degree Campbell and Harris decommitted because of on-field results, I'd argue it's more that than the straight W-L record.

Still, I don't think either decommitted SOLELY for on-field results. I think a lot of factors contributed. For instance, if it's true that Harris is considering Kentucky than it's FAR more about being away from home than anything else. Kentucky football is like Alabama basketball ... the school's focus is on a different sport.

  2. While I agree winning helps recruiting, it sounds like this happened more because Borges is no longer on the staff.

    1. I think that's just a convenient reason to give now. I suspect he would have found another reason even if Borges had stayed. Harris is young, he made a very big decision somewhat quickly, and he was second-guessing his decision. Let's hope he steps back, takes in all the considerations, and comes to a more settled decisions. If that's Michigan, then great; if not, then we move on.

    2. Damine took his M stuff from his twitter long before Borges was fired. So this was coming.

    3. At the very least, it seems that Damien Harris and his parents liked Big Al a lot more than suduri does.

Staff changes always have consequences: be it time spent on terminology or scheme changes that now have to be introduced when the former terminology and schemes would have been drilled or recruits and even established guys soured because they had a relationship with the guy who got turned out. There will invariably be guys somewhere who don't like the new scheme, or the guy himself.

This is true at any level, or in any endeavor for that matter, but it is at the college level in particular that any negatives, even whining and other noises from the cheap seats has an impact. this is the case mostly because your players are so young, so inexperienced, so unsure of themselves while at the same time so full of testosterone. It's just way, real easy to get their heads spinning.

I happen to think the new guy will be better than the last guy, but there is always a cost associated with making changes, make no mistake about it.

    1. It would be pretty fun to recruit for MSU right now. Lots of clear selling points. I honestly don't know what the Michigan staff's angle could be right now when pitching to recruits.

      Delete
    2. For starters: education, prestige, campus, national exposure, facilities, alumni relationships

      Delete
    3. Those are the reasons that I went to U-M. But I was 6'0", 160 lb psychology major. I'm afraid top-level recruits will get facilities and national exposure wherever they go. Alumni connections, education, prestige, campus don't matter when you're on the NFL track.

      Delete
    4. Our facilities are state of the art, nobody has better, in the midwest, only OSU matches up across the entire football program, tradition, winningest program in history, the helmet, the Big House ..... all of it.

Hoke has been recruiting at a high level and will continue. The problems this year had far more to do with two failed classes that failed in part because of all the turmoil surrounding Rich Rod and the subsequent change to Hoke. You can't go to war in a major BCS conference against 4 and 5 year players with a youth prevalent team and expect to dominate over an entire season. Age, weight, and experience will grind down talent which we are almost back to being loaded with.

The better football players across the nation will always be interested in Michigan football just as long as we refrain from the recruiting suicide we practiced during the Rich Rod era.

    5. @Magnum

The vast majority of kids are not "on the NFL track" - even at Michigan. Some kids do, but most don't have the same criteria as a professional free agent. For some it's just lip service but many are genuinely interested in balancing academics, family considerations, etc with pure football.

      Delete
    6. I agree, Lank, but I would argue that most 4-star kids coming out of high school honestly believe that they're on the NFL track. And almost all of the super-hyped-up five-star types. I don't think they care that much about the academic/prestige stuff. They want to be surrounded by good players, be in positions that allow them to succeed, and generally look good on the field.

      Delete
    7. Some people play it smart and get a good degree as a backup plan (usually kids from good homes/parents) and others go for goodtimes, glitz, girls, etc. Regardless, I think most recruits are thinking about a lot more than on-the-field.

If recruits cared about academics above all else, Northwestern and Duke would be powerhouses, so obviously it's not all about that. But also obvious is that academics do play a factor in successful programs like Stanford, Notre Dame, Michigan, USC, etc. On the flip side, some kids are going to dismiss Boise State and Arizona State right away and that hurts them.

Football program success is probably the #1 factor, but these kids are thinking about many other issues as well. The reality is that most of these kids are blessed with many fine choices. They'll be given good opportunities on the field whether it's UCLA, Baylor, or Nebraska. Often it's those secondary non-football issues that make their decision.

  5. Look at their '14 class. Its "star" average probably doesn't differ much from those of '10 to '13.

  10. Magnus, this is great info. One request--when you put together posts like these, would it be possible to identify the players that have been added after the fact by a star and the date added, or something like that? That way, for semi-regular visitors like me, we could look for the players starred as "Added 2/1" or whatever, which would make it easier to figure out what the new info is.

And just to reiterate, this is not a complaint at all. More than anything, you do such a great job of compiling info that it can be a little overwhelming for people who are not quite as up on the minutiae.
