Eligibility Count for 2010: 77

This is a list of all scholarship players for the 2010 season. Rodriguez does not publicly announce what walk-ons are awarded scholarships, so these are my best guesses.

Added Kelvin Grady and John McColgan to the scholarship list.

Linebacker/defensive end Davion Rogers has left the team.

Defensive end Anthony Lalota has been granted his release to transfer.

Safety Vladimir Emilien has been granted his release to transfer.

Running back Austin White has been granted his release to transfer.

Cornerback Justin Turner has been granted his release to transfer.

Quarterback Conelius Jones did not qualify and will attend prep school.

Linebacker Antonio Kinard did not qualify and will attend prep school.

Cornerback Demar Dorsey did not get admitted and will attend Louisville.

Kicker Bryan Wright will not return for a fifth year.

Linebacker Brandon Smith has decided to transfer to Temple.

  1. Very helpful summary of a key question.
Think you counted Stokes twice. Coner not listed but clearly he will not be offered a 5th; same goes for Wright as two scholarship kickers is enough. That makes 26 available plus I think Kelvin Grady is not guaranteed (especially since his hands have developed that buttery coating), so 27 assuming we can still backdate two of the early enrolers to last year's class

  2. I did count Stokes twice. Thanks for catching that.

I didn't list David Cone because he walked with the seniors on Senior Day.

I'm still counting Grady because, from what I heard, he was brought in as a scholarship player. That one's in the gray area, though.

  3. Great work as always Magnus. This, if anything, should show the clear lack of upperclassmen depth on the roster. Hell, we don't even have that many scholarship players.

Can't wait to see what this team looks like in another year or two..

  4. I heard over at Scout that Cameron Gordon is going to be playing linebacker next year according to their insiders. I think he has the tools to be a good linebacker. What do you think?

  5. Thanks for the helpful list, Magnus. One typo: redshirt sophomores last season is 2012, not 2011.

  6. Anonymous on November 29,
I do think that Gordon can be a good linebacker. I've always heard that he had potential at wide receiver, so this is the first time that I've heard he's actually switching to the other side of the ball.

That being said, I do think he could be a decent linebacker. Coach Rodriguez did say that they would be looking to switch a couple offensive guys over to the defensive side of the ball this offseason, so perhaps he was referring to Gordon. The ability is there, but I wouldn't expect Gordon to contribute anytime soon.

Typo has been fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

Are you sure Brandin Hawthorne and Vlad the Impaler are not going to get a redshirt? That would really be a shame. I for one am rooting for Hawthorne to be a starting LB next year.

  9. They both appeared early in the season, so a possible redshirt would have to go through an appeal process to the NCAA. It's possible - both Kenny Demens and Junior Hemingway were awarded medical redshirts in 2008 - but at this point, I'm just counting them as sophomores. I'll move them around later if necessary.

  10. What interests me most here is the departing Seniors and how the team is affected in '2011.

    offense:

    OT Perry Dorrestein
    OG John Ferrara
    OG Steve Schilling
    TE Martell Webb

I had been thinking Schilling was replaceable, and still think that, but based on the early returns from 2010, he'll be missed. Dorrestein will be a loss also, but presumably not an enormous one with the young OTs ready to step in.

Webb mostly backs up Koger and B.Moore can probably replace him.

Overall - brilliant, with 9 out of 11 returning starters and reasonably experienced backups returning.

    Defense:

    DT Greg Banks
    DT Renaldo Sagesse
    DE Adam Patterson
    LB Obi Ezeh
    LB Jonas Mouton
FB Mark Moundros (should be updated to LB)
    CB James Rogers

The depth along the DL will be hit hard with the 3 seniors departing. The hope is that Campbell, Black, and other young players will be able to step in around Martin and RVB. The talent is solid here - no major worries. An impact recruit or two would be nice though.

On defense, I thought Ezeh and Mouton would be missed but replacing them wouldn't be traumatic. Now, its looking like Mouton has taken a big step forward and Ezeh has improved a bit as well. Primary backups are Moundros (gone) and Leach. Jones was playing, but is now out for the year. LB will be a huge concern heading into 2011.

In the secondary, Rodgers was considered irrelevant, but now he's the starting CB and appears to be holding up thusfar. Woolfolk (who can be lumped with the RS Juniors)
will take his spot though, if he isn't moved to Safety.

So 1 DL starter, 2 LBs, and we'll call Woolfolk a returning starter as well...so 8 out of 11 functional starters returning to the defense, plus a 2-deep that won't be so heavily dependent on freshman.

Woo premature excitement! Now lets avoid any more transfers.
