Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Leon Hall

Cornerback Leon Hall now plays for the Cincinnati Bengals

Leon Hall, currently of the Bengals, had 5 tackles, 1 quarterback hurry, 1 interception, and 2 pass breakups in Sunday's 20-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers.  The Panthers were quarterbacked by former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen.

Honorable mention: Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Henne completed 26/44 passes for 363 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception in a Sunday night loss against the Jets.

Dishonorable mention: Braylon Edwards got arrested for DWI last week in New York.  His punishment from the team?  He had to sit in the corner and think about what he'd done for the first 15 minutes of Sunday night's game.  Then he was allowed to go out and catch 2 passes for 87 yards and 1 touchdown to help the Jets beat the Dolphins.  Rex Ryan said that Edwards suffered enough by "being embarrassed" and would endure no further punishment from the team.  In other news, Rex Ryan is a joke.  Furthermore, I have yet to hear Michigan fans attack Edwards with the same amount of hatred as they have shown for Morgan Trent.  Trent would have been much better off to drive around drunk and endanger a bunch of people's lives than to badmouth Rich Rodriguez.

  1. Braylon Edwards is a disgrace to the Maize and Blue right now. He has regressed in maturity and learned nothing from what happened to his drinking partner Dante Stallworth. After sitting out the first quarter of a game he should been deactivated for he caught a touchdown and danced in the endzone even thought he specifically said he would not. Lloyd Carr if you are out there you need to call his ass up and chew him out.

  2. Braylon's DUI had nothing to do with Michigan, as opposed to Morgan's Trent's comments that clearly peeved a lot of the fanbase. Your parallel isn't just faulty - it doesn't even exist.

  3. Good point. Drunk-driving is a much more serious offense than disloyalty to the program. No surprise though - drunk-driving is largely tolerated in our society. Braylon's built up a lot of good-will in Michigan fans hearts. Right or wrong, it'll take a lot for people to dislike him given all the fond memories he brought as a player.

    Braylon's DUI had nothing to do with Michigan...except for the fact that a famous alumnus that many people associate with U of M is now considered to be a criminal.

  6. What's there to "attack" about Edwards in any significant "amount"? I haven't scanned all the msg boards out there, but once you say (rightly) Edwards is an immature dope who is lucky he didn't kill someone, what else is there to say?     It's a pretty black and white situation.

    With Morgan Trent, as noted earlier, it was completely about Michigan and fully part of the "RR sux/RR is the man" war (now down at a low simmer, but will surely flare up again if we lose to Indiana or if we lose 2 or 3 games in a row) that has fueled comment boards since early 2008. There were a lot angles to discuss (e.g., does RR develop players; does he treat them poorly; was Trent being disloyal; was Trent ultimately being helpful; why does our D stink; etc) and thus, a lot of mentions of Trent (some with significant animosity) kept coming up in comments. With Edwards, it was basically, "Stop being an idiot. Please." and then you move on.

  7. Braylon Edwards seems like an ass. Morgan Trent seems like an ass. Saying that Trent shouldn't be labeled such because he hasn't, to anyone's knowledge, willfully endangered the lives of anonymous others is setting the bar pretty low for my regard. It also strikes me as very weird to think that anyone should be expected to portion out their personal enmity based on some rationally ordered ranking of ethical standing.

    Really? You don't think drunk driving is a more egregious behavior than saying negative things about your former football coach? Only one of those things is illegal, after all...

  9. Regarding the whole DUI thing, I agree that it gets glossed over way too much. I think Rodriguez has done a good job running the program pretty cleanly legal issues wise, but I think he's set a very bad example of how he handled Kevin Grady and Stonum's DUIs. Those guys not getting any game suspension is pretty much inexcusable in my book and sets a terrible example. As a fan base we've done pretty poorly by basically ignoring those incidents.

    Of course I think drunk driving is worse than talking smack about an ex-coach. That's kind of my point. An analogy: I'll say many more negative things about my jerk of a neighbor who takes up two parking spots than I will about, say, some guy two towns over who got busted running a meth lab. The guy running the meth lab is clearly guilty of a much worse transgression and is likely a less ethical all around person. But that absolute scale of ethical standing is not how I (or anyone else, I imagine) decide on the extent to which I form or express feelings of disapproval.

    I guess that's one place where you and I differ. At this point, I'd much rather wear a Morgan Trent jersey than a Braylon Edwards jersey. Anybody who drinks and drives is ridiculously selfish and short-sighted.

    I'd rather spend a day with Morgan Trent, Toney Clemons, or Amani Toomer than hang out with Boubacar Cissoko or Braylon Edwards.
