My main problem with RR's recruiting approach was that he threw around offers so easily. It should be a big deal when Michigan offers a scholarship, just as it is with OSU, Texas, etc. This "commitable" and "non-commitable" offer business seemed questionable.
ReplyDeleteBy all means, call around and recruit many, but don't put out an offer until you mean it.
im pretty sure texas only handed out 26-28 or so scholarships for perspective.

No one else can recruit like Texas, but there's a happy medium between that and putting out offers just to get someone to pay attention to you.
ReplyDeleteI know this is 100% hypothetical but if Hoke and staff (who weren't my #1 option but for this is irrelevant) were here recruiting this class from beginning to end for Michigan do you think we'd have a lot more top 100 guys?
ReplyDeleteGoing down the list I think Jernigan would be a commit since he wanted to come here minus the 3-3-5, Arnett would be a commit with a pro-style offense and Zettel since he seemed to have wanted a "Big 10" style team. After those three who I think would have been a lock I think we'd have had a decent chance at Lawrence Thomas, Frost, Charles Jackson, Doran Grant, Lyons, Hobbi, Hamilton, Barnes, Walls, Royster, and an outside chance on some elite guys like Curtis Grant, Farmer, De'Anthony Thomas, Karlos Williams, Ray Drew, CJ Johnson, Westerman, and Dawson.
Obviously 85% of them wouldn't come to Michigan but 15% of that group is a top 10 class. Do you agree?
Are any of those guys looking twice at Michigan now? Someone like Jernigan who still hasn't committed could come here and start on day 1. Personally I think a Roh-Martin-Jernigan-RVB front 4 would be amazing.

But keep in mind that Hoke and his staff haven't shown any indication that they're going to recruit Florida with the same vigor as Rodriguez and Co. I think it's presumptuous to think that Jernigan would be a commit, since who knows if he even would have been offered or pursued heavily?
Zettel would probably be a Wolverine. I don't really care about Arnett.
I think Michigan probably would have pursued many of those guys and landed a couple of them, but like I said, it's tough to say.
Different coaches have different recruiting plans. Right now we're seeing Brady Hoke go after a bunch of players from the midwest, especially Ohio. That's understandable, because he said in his introductory press conference that you have to recruit your home base. But it's also possible that he will continue to center his recruiting in Michigan and Ohio, and try to recruit less frequently on a national level. I could be wrong, but I have my doubts that Hoke will go after places like Florida with as much fervor as Rodriguez.
I think Michigan is going to concentrate on Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Louisiana, Texas, and California moving forward. His staff has solid connections and relationships in those areas.
Jernigan and Hamilton are the 2 I'm really upset about not getting since both seem like ideal fits for Hoke. Karlos Williams would be my favorite "need" guy though.

ReplyDeleteI don't think we really need Karlos Williams, though. He's a SS/OLB type, and we have plenty of those with Marvin Robinson, Carvin Johnson, Thomas Gordon, Cam Gordon, Josh Furman, etc. He's an awesome player, but it's not really a "need" position.
