2011 Countdown: #41 Je'Ron Stokes

Je'Ron Stokes (#6) hauls in a touchdown pass in the 2011 spring game
Name: Je'Ron Stokes
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 193 lbs.
High school: Northeast High School in Philadelphia, PA
Position: Wide receiver
Class: Junior
Jersey number: #6
Last year: I ranked Stokes #42 and said he'd have a dozen catches as a backup wide receiver.  He had 1 catch for 11 yards.

I overestimated Stokes' usefulness a little bit last year, a season in which he had exactly one reception.  He tied for 12th on the team in receptions, and Michigan only lost five of their 243 receptions from a season ago (all five coming from tight end Martell Webb).  So there are still ten guys left who had more productive seasons catching the ball.

When Stokes is out on the field, he doesn't look bad.  He's not particularly slow or particularly short.  It seems like the quarterbacks just have better chemistry with the other wideouts.  With three seniors (Junior Hemingway, Martavious Odoms, and Darryl Stonum if he gets his life in order) and the team's leading receiver (Roy Roundtree) returning here in 2011, things aren't looking good for Stokes in the near future.  He probably won't be targeted much again this season, which gives him one year to shine before running out of eligibility.  The clock is ticking.

Prediction: Backup wide receiver; 5 catches, 70 yards

  1. Question for no one in particular: Why on earth was this guy not redshirted in '09?!

  2. Given the departures of odoms, hemingway, kelvin grady, and stonum at the end of the season, is there any chance for a redshirt for stokes?

  3. Burning his redshirt in 2009 was sorta stupid.

  4. As I think Brian Cook mentioned in the Maple Street Press preview, it would be useful to have Stokes redshirt this year. It isn't as if someone else is going to leap in and grab 30 passes and get ahead of him by playing this year. The four main guys you list will be the four main guys (possibly minus Stonum). #5 is only going to get a few passes. If I were Stokes I would look at the depth chart and think "I could be the #1 guy for two years in a row" (unless some 5-star WR takes over as a true sophomore in 2013).

  5. I am finding it incredibly encouraging that we are still in the 40's and guys like Schofield and Stokes are popping up. They of course have not proven much of anything on the field at Michigan yet, but they 1) were fairly highly regarded recruits and 2) have game experience/not freshman. finally after a few years we can at least say we have some experienced depth on the roster.

  6. Why did he not red shirt? If you only get 1 catch your second season and most likely won't get many more your junior season it seems like a waste of a player for three of his four years. If he sat out his first year (which he did anyway) he could have had two years left after the three seniors left.

  7. Je'Ron is a burner, one of 5 or so athletes on our team who run a sub 4.4 40. I feel he could really excel in the offense next year if Denard and him can get some good chemistry between the two of them. He was a recruit I was really excited about because we snagged him late in the process, and I liked his tape. I hope he turns into a reliable backup receiver this year so he can move comfortably into a starting spot next year.

  8. Disagree with people arguing that Stokes should red-shirt. WR is wide open next year and we need someone to step up opposite Roundtree. Stokes is the leading contender. I'd rather have a guy with some experience do that.

Stonum is the guy I'd really like to see Red-shirt, if he is going to be suspended for a lot of the season anyway, it could be in everyone's interest. Jackson would be a good candidate as well. That would put him in the same eligibility class as J.Robinson. That's beneficial considering the lack of recruit taken in the '11 class.

  9. If Stonum is redshirted we have one less scholarship. Would you rather have one more year of Stonum (assuming something else doesn't happen) or another DT or WR? Personally, I desperately want 2 more DTs and 2 WRs in this class.
