Potential Attrition

Sheridyn Fisher . . . just because.

As Michigan's 2012 recruiting class comes closer and closer to filling up, more and more people - including me - seem interested in just how big the class will be.  The maximum number of players any Big Ten team can sign in February is 28.  Head coach Brady Hoke stated previously that he expected the class to grow to 26.

Right now the Wolverines have 22 or 23 commits, depending on whether Kentucky safety Jeremy Clark counts for this class or the next one.  Aside from the fourth year juniors who haven't seen much playing time this season (Michael Cox, Terrence Robinson, Elliott Mealer, etc.), there are a couple other underclassmen that could very well depart in the offseason.

It would be somewhat irresponsible for me to post specific names here, but I've received a couple questions in my inbox about who they might be and why.  If you take a long, hard look at Michigan's roster and think about the youngsters who are glued to the bench, you can probably take an educated guess.

Don't be surprised if Michigan signs 27 or 28 players in February.

  1. I'd be shocked if Mealer wasn't back.

With Molk and Huyge departing, Khoury and Schofield will step into the starting lineup, leaving no experienced depth behind them. If RS FR Bryant and RS SO Miller pan out, then we can avoid playing true freshman...but so far Mealer is ahead of those two and he's versatile enough to swing between OT and OG. He may even start over Khoury if Barnum slides to Center.

  2. Sheridyn Fisher "softens the blow" of this potential attrition, lol. I was surprised to see Posada jump ship. If Mealer left too I'd be bummed. We'll get the availability for 28 players pretty easily, we have too many players not playing.

  3. Three questions:
    1. Is Isaiah Bell on the team or not?
    2. Is Floyd Simmons on scholarship?
    3. WTF Mike Jones?

  4. this is always a tough subject, especially when trying to predict where attrition comes from.

i still think the scholarship numbers are too fluid to provide any educated guess. even with the new EE's, only hoke/mattison have a number in mind, which can very well change by season's end. that said, the sam webb blurb on danny O makes me believe the numbers are still a little limited for them to feel confident signing 5 more (assuming clark goes to the 2013 numbers). the EEs will provide enough room for 28, if need be, but i think it tentatively stays at 26 now.

this has been on my mind a bunch too

I don't think Mealer WILL leave, but it's a possibility.

    1. Yes, Bell is still on the team.
    2. I don't know if Simmons is on scholarship. The coaches keep that pretty private.
    3. I've never been a fan of Mike Jones' ability, so I guess I'm not too surprised that he's not out there.

  7. While the staff might want Mealer to stay on because of the lack of depth, it is possible that Elliot might not want to return. He does have a unique family situation, after all.

  8. Is the amount of recruits that are allowed to be signed per season 28 regardless of which class they are assigned to? Do the potential early enrollees count against our 28? Does Jeremy Clark count? Please explain?

The number of 28 refers to the maximum number of players who can be signed in February. Up to three of those can be backdated to the 2011 class if they enroll early, which a few of them are planning to do and that shouldn't be a problem.

Jeremy Clark is not currently planning to be a member of the 2012 class, so he doesn't really matter in this discussion. The only way he comes into the equation is if the coaches want him to start playing in 2012; as of now, he's a class of 2013 kid.

So if Wilson, Bolden, and Pipkins enroll early, then they can count back to the 2011 class, since a couple of those class of 2011 kids (Kell Jones, Christ Barnett) left prior to the season and never officially enrolled at Michigan. Then those other 25 kids can be part of the 2012 class, provided the attrition occurs that is expected.

  10. Is Ringer or any other recruit allowed to enroll early if he wants? There is talk of Bri'onte Dunn early enrolling if he chooses a school before January. Ringer ahs said he is planning on early enrolling.
