National Underclassmen Combine: Michigan top 20 for 2013

Shallman is NUC's 15th-best prospect in Michigan
National Underclassmen Combine released its top 20 in-state prospects for the class of 2013.  All of the players are notable, I guess, since they're in-state kids . . . but the order in which they're ranked might be a bit surprising.  Click through for the full list, but here are the Michigan offerees:

1. Steve Elmer - OL - Midland (MI) Midland (Notre Dame)
2. Shane Morris - QB - Warren (MI) De La Salle (Michigan)
4. David Dawson - OL - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech (Michigan)
6. Jourdan Lewis - DB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech (Michigan)
10. Khalid Hill - LB - Detroit (MI) Crockett (Michigan)
15. Wyatt Shallman - DL - Novi (MI) Catholic Central (Michigan)

  1. Well, I'm sure Dantonio will still find some way to claim he got Michigan's top player...

    1. I think we would have liked to have gotten Elmer.

Dantonio will recruit Riley Norman and Cameron Dillard* who are probably both pretty nice offensive linemen and say he got his guys in the state of Michigan, and it'll be true except that I don't think we ever offered those guys.

It's all good as they all are feeling the pressure over there, even Izzo seems a little edgy, the tournament should be interesting.

  2. What has Shallman done to warrant anything more than 15?

    1. I'm not the world's biggest Wyatt Shallman fan, but I do think there are a couple questionable guys ahead of him.

    2. Looking at Shalilman in the above picture, he's a pretty lean 245. I'd hate to have to be taking him on after 3-4 years in a Big Ten strength program, pads down, turned upfield.

  3. With all of these TE/UBack/FB types getting recruited, do you think that the coaches are going to run some plays out of a Maryland set in the coming seasons?

    1. It's possible, but there's no reason to expect it.

  5. Is there a reason that DeLano Hill doesnt have an offer from michigan? I mean he is a 6'1" corner from cass tech and one of the best players in the state

    1. My guess is coaches don't have enough film on him. Terry Richardson and Jourdan Lewis were the starting corners for Cass Tech next last year. While those guys are certainly no bums, it's hard to draw major attention to yourself when you are a nickel back/sub at your position. Sounds like a guy that should rack up some good MAC offers and maybe an Iowa offer.

    2. Eh, I'm not particularly enamored with Hill. He's a good player but not great in any one area.

  6. I don't have a problem with the rankings. Athletes without clear positions like Shallman are always going to be difficult to evaluate. You look at Denard Robinson and Cam Gordon coming out of high school (similarly ranked, very different results) and remember back to all the questions about where they could/should end up. Uncertainty about position fit is just as valid of a concern as anything else. Maybe these guys just think the fact he's coming in as a RB will hinder his development toward his eventual spot on the DL.

OTOH, it's obvious what college coaches think based on these guys' offer list.
