Recruiting Update: October 1, 2012

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Virginia Beach (VA) Bayside safety Quin Blanding was offered by Michigan.  Blanding is a 6'2", 200 lb. defensive back with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech, among others.  As a sophomore in 2011, he had 67 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and 7 interceptions.  He was one of just a couple rising juniors to be invited to Nike's The Opening in Eugene, OR, last July.

Chesapeake (VA) Indian River defensive tackle Andrew Brown was offered by Michigan.  Brown is a 6'4", 282 lb. tackle with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech, among others.  I'm not a big fan of Brown because he's a showboater.  He has a lot of talent, but there's a little too much pounding of his chest in his highlights.  I would prefer if Michigan stays away from players like this.

Check out the Recruit Tracker series to see how Michigan's 2013 recruits are doing this season.

Also, here's a highlight film of Richmond (VA) Hermitage running back Derrick Green from the first half of the season.  I still don't see a dynamic running back, but he does fall forward for an extra yard or two, so that's good . . .

  1. I don't get the 'too much chest pounding'. I watched the highlights expecting to see some NFL style sack dances. Instead I saw 4-5 of what appeared to be celebratory screams with an arm shake thrown in. There is no way to determine whether this was a first quarter first down clubbing or a crucial last game stop. And, he didn't celebrate on every play. Oh well, opinions are like -------- everybody's got one.

    1. It happens in the video somewhat, but it has also happened at camp this past summer.

    2. Makes sense, I understood your point either way. I'm probably just a little more tolerant of showboating.

  2. Blanding looks like a grown-ass man already.

Magnus, I think you're far too critical of high school kids who could use a little discipline. Remember when you complained about Dennis Norfleet jogging into the end zone too often? But has he ever given less than 100% on the field for Michigan? There are so many kids who get away with stuff on the field purely because their coaches let them.

    1. If kids get away with stuff because their coaches let them, then that's a discipline concern. It doesn't mean that the issue will persist, but it is a concern.

Norfleet hasn't had a chance not to finish plays. He touches the ball maybe 5 times a game, and he has yet to score a touchdown.

    2. A very large number of kids who play high school sports are not being taught discipline at home, so if their coaches aren't teaching it either, then how can you logically be critical of the kid for lacking it in your opinion? Discipline can be taught. Clearly the coaches are optimistic.

Norfleet certainly has had chances to bail on plays regardless of proximity to the end zone. But I have yet to see him go down early or give up.

  3. I think Green is a great RB! I think a RB that leans forward and gets it to a 3 and 3 instead of 3 and 6 is a 1-2 Win swing...... I hope he comes to UM and runs behind the line we are going to have in the next couple of years.

Usually I agree with some of the comments you say about some of these high school kids...but looking at the video you posted of Andrew Brown..but unless you are looking at another video...he didn't do any chest thumping or look at me type of celebrations at all. I was expecting Ray Lewis or Clay Matthews type antics.
It appeared to me the kid played with some intensity and played DT and DE, rushed the passer and played the run quite well. So I am curious why your opinion that Michigan should stay away from players like this comes into play? What players are you wanting Michigan to recruit if not players such as Andrew Brown? Does he have grade issues? Low SAT scores? Locker room problems? I mean it has to be more to it because based on this video this is the type of DL player needs to recruit. Someone with versatility that Hoke could mold and unleash.
Don't get me wrong...nothing wrong with being critical of the young man's play. But it seems your being too critical of something that is not on the video.

    1. I think there is some evidence of it on this video, but I have also seen other videos and heard other rumors about Brown's attitude. This is not the first time I've heard Brown's name; he's been talked about for several months, at least. Keep in mind, too, that coaches are not necessarily going to put unsportsmanlike "highlights" on a kid's highlight video. I'm not saying they excised any unsportsmanlike plays, but if he danced or showboated too much after a particular sack, that highlight might not have made into Youtube...
