Deadspin, MGoBlog: Manti Te'o hilarity

Is this Manti Te'o's girlfriend?
Here's the awesome Deadspin article that reveals that Manti Te'o's girlfriend was totally non-existent and, on the bright side, not dead at all.

Or is this Manti Te'o's girlfriend?
And here's MGoBlog's entertaining response to the news about Te'o.

As a man who isn't a total idiot, I don't believe there is any possible way that Te'o wasn't involved with the hoax.  Maybe he was originally duped, but he would have found out that his "dying girlfriend" was just a Hawaiian dude with a strange hobby.

  1. Is the most likely scenario that this was a concoction to cover up that Te'o was gay? He makes up a fake girlfriend (explaining why he doesn't have one at ND). Then people start asking about her and with the draft upcoming they'd expect to see this "love of his life" with him at the bowl and draft so they decide they need to end it and stupidly they say she died (which is really dumb, had they just said they broke up it'd be a non-issue). It also explains why he didn't look at BYU despite being mormon and while ND isn't liberal it is by far the most liberal of the religious schools with football.

To me this seems to be the only thing that makes sense (why would he create this for publicity 2 years ago?) . I find it really sad however that he feels like he needs to do this. I can't imagine how hard it'd be to be gay in football, especially at ND and then in the NFL where the players are notoriously conservative (especially socially), but I think today the NFL would be mostly willing to accept him if he was a good player. Just like with the integration of black athletes, there will be some idiot bigots along the way that will make this tough, but I think most fan bases honestly wouldn't care if he is a good player. Would he have to prove himself more, yes, absolutely. But at the end of the day I think this was just a big miscalculation on his end.
