  1. This may be a stupid question, but I haven't paid much attention to how the camps work. Is it a bigger than usual deal for a Junior to get invited to the opening?

    1. There are usually only a couple or a few guys invited to these things. Da'Shawn Hand was invited to The Opening last year as a junior, and I think there was one other guy. I believe this was the second year that Bo Scarbrough attended the Rivals 5-star Challenge. So yeah, it's kind of a big deal that Campbell got invited.

    1. I'm not 100% sure on how kids get invites, but I don't think Peppers went to any of the NFTC events, and that might have prevented him from earning a spot.

    2. I don't think Peppers has camped at all. If he wanted an invite I'm sure he could have gotten one by going to a Nike camp but just chose not to. For a kid as talented as he is, with his music and other extracurricular, I really can't blame him for not wanting to camps.

  4. Magnus, general question regarding camps. I know you aren't a fan of camp performance giving any insight into a player's football abilities, but do camps serve any purpose for the players besides exposure? Do they actually learn useful football techniques and skills? Are the coaches there any good and do they have enough time to actually teach the players anything? I've read that they are often disorganized and I have no idea what types show up to coach them. SMSB seems different since you have actual college coaches, but the rest seem suspect. Wouldn't the players be better off going to the university run summer camps if they want actual coaching?

    1. Camps have a lot of different purposes. Camps like The Opening and the Rivals 5-star Challenge are mostly about exposure and competition between elite athletes. It's basically like a showcase or an all-star camp. I think the coaches there do teach good technique, but every coach coaches a little bit differently. If you have a defensive tackle working with a 3-4 coach who's headed into a 4-3 scheme, then the coaching might not be that useful.

Anytime you get a bunch of coaches together without one common program goal, it's going to be a little disjointed. It's tough to get around that. From what I gather, most of the coaches at these camps are people who make a living as personal coaches for hire or who work at athletic academies.

University-run summer camps are good for players who are prospects for those particular schools, but if you're not good enough for their liking, a lot of those coaches will ignore you. You'll get more one-on-one attention and coaching if you attend camps at FCS or D-II schools.
