Michigan Daily: This isn't on Devin Gardner

Everett Cook explains to us that this isn't Devin Gardner's fault even though I haven't really heard anyone say that it's Devin Gardner's fault.

  1. I'd say it's not Devin Gardner's fault with that Oline, but he hasn't improved during the course of the season. The drops by Funchess of coz didn't help, but two things that he keeps doing in games make me question how talented is he really at QB. First is he never slides. The play that he supposed gained 2 yards after scrambled, but he didn't slide, and got push back and then from 2nd and 8 turned to 2nd and 14. That's was such a dump play that totally on DG. And that play reminds me that he never slides. The other thing is he keeps turning his back and run to escape when facing blitz. He just can't side-step or step-up to avoid blitz. His run back cost 5-10 extra-yardage lost. After near a whole season, he couldn't fix these 2 obvious issues. Don't know it's whether on him or his coach, ie Borges.

    1. The reverse spin is allegedly a taught technique.

There were several passes in the Iowa game where Gardner demonstrated excellent poise in the pocket, so he's definitely capable. I don't think Al Borges is a very good QB coach. For all his talk about being a "waist-down" focused QB coach, his QBs haven't exactly had great footwork any of the seasons he's been here.

  2. Many of the people blaming Gardner (who I believe shares a *little* bit of the blame for how things are going) of MGoBlog seem like the ones who will defend Borges and Funk until the whole @%#$house is in flames. The blame has to be shifted somewhere else and Gardner is an inviting target.

    1. No need to pick either Borges or Devin as primary drivers for UM's problems. You can pick both, and then some! Borgie entered the season with a ridiculous scheme and has been super slow to adjust. Devin can't get rid of the ball on time, does not see defenders in coverage, and defenses have absolutely no respect for his passing. Then you have the OL/TE/RB blocking. Don't see why fans feel the need to find one primary target for their ire. This year's offense has been an amalgam of multiple, terrible factors.
