Scouting Report: Vic Enwere

Vic Enwere (image via Fort Bend Star)
Name: Vic Enwere
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 213 lbs.
High school: Sugar Land (TX) Fort Bend Austin
Position: Running back
Class: 2014

Notes: Holds offers from California, Colorado, Duke, Houston, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Utah, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Wisconsin . . . Committed to Cal on June 17 . . . As a junior in 2012, had 210 carries for 1,509 yards and 16 touchdowns, plus 8 receptions for 140 yards . . . As a senior in 2013, currently has 2,266 yards and 32 touchdowns . . . ESPN 3-star, 78 grade, #58 RB . . . Rivals 3-star, #47 RB . . . Scout 3-star, #52 RB . . . 247 Sports 3-star, 85 grade, #65 RB

Strengths: Solid frame with good lower body strength . . . Keeps shoulders square to line of scrimmage and defenders . . . Difficult to bring down on first contact . . . Shows nice vision and patience to find the hole and cutback lanes . . . Displays good footwork in backfield . . . Carries ball high and tight . . . Protects ball in traffic . . . Shows nifty feet in the hole . . . Catches ball well on screens and flares

Weaknesses: Lacks any kind of breakaway speed . . . Not quick enough to elude third- and sometimes second-level defenders . . . Lacks burst to pull away after contact and cuts, allowing trailers to bring him down

Projection: Running back. Enwere looks like a college running back right now or maybe even the type of guy who turns into an inside linebacker with some added weight. He lacks the breakaway speed to be an elite running back at the college level, and while a lot of running backs aren't faster than defensive backs, my biggest concern for Enwere's future is he looks like he might be overmatched in the quickness department by a lot of college linebackers. He should be able to fight for extra yardage after contact, but he will probably be limited to running between the tackles. Enwere is the type of player who can be a solid backup because of how hard he runs, but if he's your feature back, your offense is going to be limited.

Reminds me of: Max Martin

Likelihood of coming to Michigan: Enwere is currently committed to Cal but has expressed interest in visiting Michigan. Prior to the tender, he stated that he would not visit Michigan unless they offered. It's tough to pull kids out of Texas, but the Wolverines are arguably the best offer he has.

  1. If you wouldn't mind reaching (as he apparently does not play both ways), how do you think he would do as an ILB?

    1. He's physical and has good vision. I don't see any reason why he couldn't develop into a pretty good linebacker, other than the fact that he's somewhat inexperienced at it.

  2. So, you hinted on MGoBlog that there are rumors of attrition. Care to share any of the names being kicked around?

    1. From what I've heard, Thomas Rawls is probably not going to be around after this year.

  3. Rawls will be back IMO - his momma is very proud that he is on track to graduate from UM.

    1. He can still get his degree without being in the football team a la Ricardo Miller. It's not difficult to graduate with spring and summer terms given the fact that he already put in three years of school. That would be the best, as that would open up a spot and he has no chance for PT at this point.

    2. Maybe he turned things around, but academics were an issue in high school. Graduating early may not be that simple.

    3. He had some academic issues, but if he made it this far, he should be able to finish with the help from tutors, etc. He doesn't have to be with the team in order to finish a la Ricardo Miller. Miller left during the fall semester of 2012, and graduated after doing the winter semester in 2013 while not being a part of the team. I am sure there are some rules that go into this, but I am sure he can work something out so that he can still go to school and finish while giving away his spot. That would be the best, as there's almost no chance that he gets any PT at this point.

  4. Looks like a pretty solid back to me that would compete and could develop. Balance and vision appear to be there. Definitely a step above the reaches they had at RB over the 2010-2012 classes. I think his size may be a bit inflated (guessing 6'0" tops, 200 lbs), which has been par for the course for RB recruits the last few years. But the coaches can assess that in person obviously.

    1. A bit hard to pull a kid out of Houston to come to Michigan, which is 1,300 miles away with snow that he probably never saw in his life. Anyhow, I saw the film, and not really impressed. There's probably a reason why major football schools in Texas (UT, A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, TCU) took a pass on him, I think. I understand the logic behind taking a back in every class, but since we have so many right now we probably can take a pass for 2014 unless a very good talent comes into fold.

  5. I'm not a fan of offering a RB in this class. If they do, it should be a 'lighting' to go with the Smith/Green "thunder".
