This is one of the reasons I don't think we'll miss Lewan as much as some people think. He may have been the best blocker on an inexperienced Oline, but I think he was disruptive to team chemistry, as well as being a hothead on the field. I look for the Oline to be a more cohesive unit this year, and hopefully overall team chemistry will improve. No amount of good play-calling can make up for that.
When people are missing blocks left and right and teams are blitzing you like crazy, one or two talented lineman does not buy you a lot. If the group gets their assignments down and gets a better feel for the combo blocks they run on most plays, they will look way better, even if the talent is not much improved. Getting physically beat is one thing, but there were just too many plays where blockers were unsure/tentative and defenders took advantage.
The other key is Devin. If he is able to read coverage and blitzers a little quicker this year, we'll see him burn over-aggressive DC's and force them to call off the dogs.
Gardner didn't call audibles last year. Teams recognized what the playcall was, by whatever formation we lined up in, then took advantage of it with an aggressive playcall. Nuss is changing that this year.
The proof will be seen by the play on the field, of course ...
But that said, the article hints at a change in Hoke, which I think is a good thing. I suspect Hoke came into this job with a romantic view of Michigan 'tradition' and the role of seniors. Reality is forcing a change in his view of such things. The discharging of Borges is part of this maturation process.
I think this is definitely s step in the right direction. Definitely comes across as a shot at the previous senior class which I do not have a problem with. As long as they are able to fix the issues in the locker room from last year. Reading articles like these gives me more hope for next season.
I normally don't like dyed hair, but damn can she pull that off
