Here are some notes from the coaches clinic on D.J. Durkin (LINK).

Hit the jump for some pictures of model Sydney Maler. I like picture #3 best.

  1. Interesting article. Comment about "short space quickness" was interesting in light of all the discussion today about Richardson's speed. Speed and quickness aren't quite the same thing ... I'm wondering if they saw something in Richardson's quickness they liked, particularly for a short side corner, as you noted you'd play him at?

  2. I know he's D.J. Durkin and I ain't, but that blitz looks like a prescription for heartbreak to me should Mike and DE happen to get tangled up.

I'm wondering how the timing works there.

    1. We run this blitz, so I have some idea of the mechanics. First of all, our defensive end loops immediately, so he doesn't waste any time taking any jab steps upfield. The edge is threatened by an immediate blitz from the SAM linebacker. Meanwhile, the MIKE linebacker has to delay until the end crosses the A gap. It can give you heartbreak if you run it at the wrong time, so it's only something you want to run on passing downs to put pressure on the QB.

    2. I looked at the sketch again. What happens if you don't cross the center's face with your DE, but rather have the DE and Mike hit their respective gap to the side they're already coming from.

Wouldn't you likely get somebody there more quickly? Or does that make it too easy for one guard or the other to see it coming and help. You still have 4 on 3 coming up the middle, regardless of the Gap.
