2021 Season Countdown: #55 Andre Seldon, Jr.

Andre Seldon

Name: Andre Seldon, Jr.
Height:
5'8"
Weight:
172 lbs.
High school:
Belleville (MI) Belleville
Position:
Cornerback
Class:
Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:
#0
Last year:
I ranked Seldon #32 and said he would start at nickel corner (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
83

Seldon was an Under Armour All-American and seemed destined for early playing time in a Michigan uniform, especially for a team lacking corners.

Then 2020 rolled around, and he almost never played.

That can be partially explained by the fact that Seldon suffered an injury, but he supposedly got healthy partway through the season and still was kept off the field.

I still think Seldon could be an excellent nickel corner because of his quickness, man coverage, and willingness to come up and stop the run, despite his diminutive stature. It remains to be seen how this staff will use a player in that mold. Talk is that safety Daxton Hill could move to the nickel spot when that position is necessary, but I would think that would be dependent on who's available to play in the slot.

If the extra safety is better, move Hill to nickel. If the extra corner is better, keep Hill at safety.

I don't know how much Seldon will play in 2021, but I do think he's one of the top five most talented defensive backs.

Prediction: Backup cornerback

  1. None of us know for sure until the Western game what the new defense will look like. Who will be where, etc. I've even read Adain Hutchinson will be an OLB. Yeah, 5.2 speed at LB, right. Anyway, didn't Don Brown say Seldon is the most talented athlete on the team? Or was that Sainristil?
Whatever this new defense is, I'm hoping it's more physical, and uses zone a little more. I'm also hoping there's more Josh Uche type EDGE. Mike McDonald and Ryan Osborn might have a lot of that up their sleeves.
And gah! No more LBs lined up on the interior DLine with one hand in the dirt.

Isn't it just 2 weeks to Fall Camp?

    1. I don't know if there's an Uche coming as our young edge guys were not profiled as having elite speed like Uche or Clark. Best bet might be a converted LB who grows into it (like Winovich) or perhaps Ojabo. For now I'd be expecting more Ojemudia or RJS types as opposed to guys who are going to be game-planned against.

  2. I like this seldon kid. Being injured during a (very) short season explains PT for a young TrFR

Let's hope he progresses in Fall camp, and we get to see his athleticism on the field

  3. Rooting for Seldon to pop up the depth chart and start popping opposing WR. It would be fun to have a tough physical little pest in the secondary.

  4. Trivia: Seldon is tied with others for shortest (at 5'8") and clocks in as the lightest at 172 pounds.
