The [late] signing period opens up on Wednesday. February's National Signing Day used to mean fireworks, but there won't be many fireworks for Michigan this year, as they signed most of their class back in December.

Of the players listed above, Michigan is only really involved with offensive tackle Josh Conerly. Conerly was at one time considered a Michigan lean, but he has already taken official and unofficial visits to Ann Arbor. Things seem to be trending away from Michigan since Conerly still plans to visit other schools after Wednesday. He does not plan to sign on February 2, and much like 2021 prospect J.T. Tuimalu, he will likely just show up to the school of his choice over the summer. His primary options include Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC, and Washington.
Meanwhile, Michigan "commit" Kevonte Henry will probably end up signing elsewhere. He did not sign with the Wolverines in December, and despite not rescinding his verbal commitment, Michigan has essentially stopped pursuing him. Arizona, Oklahoma, and Washington are all more likely to receive his signature than Michigan.
Of the two in-state prospects on the list above, linebacker Jordan Cannon was never strongly pursued by Michigan. And wide receiver Tay'shawn Trent was at one time committed to the Wolverines, but the two parties mutually agreed to part ways due to some issues on Trent's end. Neither one is expected to end up with the in-state Wolverines.
Aside from the pursuit of Conerly, Michigan has mostly moved on to the 2023 class and will also probably look at the transfer portal this spring and summer.
I didn't think Kevonte Henry was going to work out with Michigan. He had a slow first step. And really, I didn't know what Michigan wanted him in the first place. He was going to be a "project" that maybe started to show fruit after maybe 3 years.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking to see interior D Linemen from the portal. There is big need in the interior D Line. And I think the new D Line coach is going to address is properly. I think there's going to be night and day difference in the interior D Line next season.
What happened to the RB from Texas that we are quite high on? Was he supposed to be in this class or next year's class?

DeleteThanks. Indeed I was thinking of Andrew Paul. So now we are down to Josh Conerly. I wonder why we are rarely in the race for the 4/5 star recruits who did not sign during the early signing period.
DeleteI miss the old signing day. Far more satisfying to do this as a fan after the season is done and we know who is out the door mostly. It was a turn of the page and full look ahead. Now it's just another day in the process.
