Way Too Early 2023 Depth Chart: May 2022

Erick All

I know this is a very, very early depth chart, but I think it's interesting for two reasons:

  1. It's fun.
  2. It shows what positions Michigan needs to recruit in the 2023 class.

The following depth chart has removed these listed players from the 2022 depth chart due to expiring eligibility, even though some could return with a fifth year or COVID year exception:

  • QB Alan Bowman (graduation)
  • WR Ronnie Bell (graduation)
  • WR Cornelius Johnson (graduation)
  • WR Mike Sainristil (graduation)
  • TE Erick All (graduation)
  • TE Luke Schoonmaker (graduation)
  • OL Ryan Hayes (graduation)
  • OL Olu Oluwatimi (graduation)
  • DE Taylor Upshaw (graduation)
  • DT Julius Welschof (graduation)
  • LB Michael Barrett (graduation)
  • CB Gemon Green (graduation)
  • S German Green (graduation)
  • P Brad Robbins (graduation)

It also assumes that every currently rostered player and every currently committed prospect will be here in 2023, which is obviously not true.

Hit the jump for the depth chart.

  1. You think McNamara won't turn pro after this season?

    1. I think McNamara will go pro or transfer after this season, but he still has eligibility left, so I'm not going to remove him.

    2. If McNamara loses the QB job in 2022, he'll likely transfer. If he plays but doesn't develop enough for the NFL, he could transfer and hope that a fifth year elsewhere might improve his draft stock.

    3. I don't think he's going to lose his starting job during the season. I read that McNamara is going to be the starter on day 1, and that McCarthy will be getting more playing time. I just don't see McCarthy passing McNamara. I think McNamara is better than most think he is.

    4. In general, I think "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." But Harbaugh has made QB changes before when he was winning, such as when he went from Alex Smith to Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco.

  2. It will be interesting to see where Cole Cabana ends up. But that's a long time away. Hard to focus on that, with a lot of potential things to watch this season.

  3. I'm not sure of Andrel Anthony becoming a starter next season. I am expecting it to be Darrius Clemons, as I think he will be a more consistent player. And he likely already has better hands on deep balls, is bigger, and much more physical.

    1. It would not surprise me at all if Clemons took over a starting job. We'll just have to wait and see.

    2. Though the hype is strong I'll hold off on crowning Clemons until we see him on a Saturday. Times have changed but freshman WRs who do big things are still very rare. Even Anthony Carter, Desmond Howard, and Braylon Edwards did next to nothing as freshman. More recently our best WRs have been quiet too (e.g., DPJ, Gallon, Funchess, Darboh, Bell). If Clemons is GREAT he will make noise, but starting in a very deep WR group is a tall order.

Anthony's performance against MSU was special, and doing that as a freshman is something very exciting. I don't think it was an outlier and he's been getting hype all along as well - don't sleep.

That all said - Johnson / Bell / Wilson is a strong veteran trio and with Henning in the mix the starters are probably going to be from that group.

    3. Agree. One good game, or even a few decent ones would be about as hopeful as I'd get about a TrFr WR. Nothing wrong with that, as I think we'll get what we need from others (as long as QB improves)
