Warren was a true freshman walk-on last season, but he still managed to win Scout Team Player of the Week three times. Here's what I said about him in last year's countdown:

I think Michigan got a bit of a steal here with Warren, who has some good athleticism and a live arm. Of course, he’s in the same class as 5-star recruit J.J. McCarthy, but down the road, Warren could be a guy who factors into the depth chart if he continues to build his body and work on his mechanics (which can be inconsistent).

In the spring game back in April, Warren looked like the third best quarterback on the roster - better than former Texas Tech starter Alan Bowman and better than freshman 3-star Alex Orji. Warren completed 12/23 passes for 175 yards and looked like a scholarship quarterback. Will he retain that #3 role during the season? It remains to be seen. What we do know is that both Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy will play, and it's likely that if something happened to either one, the other guy would just be the full-time quarterback. So it would take a couple injuries for Warren to see the field much, but I do think he should be the #3 quarterback.

Prediction: Backup quarterback

  1. If he's really better than Bowman that's another big feather in the cap of the Michigan walk-on program. Happy to see it with all the recruiting uncertainty at QB.

  2. I hope he is a steal, and that we continue to recruit him. Dude looked solid in spring, and if poaching is a thing, I wouldn't be surprised to read programs are reaching out ...

3d string this year, but most likely our backup next year

    1. I really like this framing: "we continue to recruit him".

Tricky situation right? Do you let him show what he can do as 3rd string option and risk other schools recruiting him? Or do you try to hide him on the bench and risk HIM looking around for more open spaces? Either way he might not be content to stay locked in as a backup for very long if he's as good as people seem to think.

CA kid who jump to prep school in CT so he's probably not locked in to Michigan. But if he's a year away from graduating and feels like he's getting better he may stay patient and give us a good backup option next year.

  3. I like that he sees someone open, and he quickly throws, even if it's a short gain. I like that in a QB, willingness to move the ball with short gains, not always looking for the home run excitement. Hey, I know that can be boring. But the ball moves, the offense keeps the ball, and before you know it, they are near the goal line. That's how Joe Montana moved the ball so many times. I see great potential in Davis Warren. If he continues to progress he will be on the heels of JJ McCarthy who is not so will to do the little passing game, but who too often does look for the home run excitement.
