It's been a while since I've done much with recruiting updates, so here's a look at what's been happening recently. Now that my football season is done, I can hopefully dip back into recruiting more frequently.
ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2023
Cameron Calhoun - CB - Cincinnati (OH) Winton Woods: Calhoun is a 6'0", 170 lb. cornerback who was recently offered by Michigan. He decommitted from Cincinnati over the weekend while visiting Kentucky; he had also previously been committed to West Virginia. The fact that he decommitted while at Kentucky looks promising for the Wildcats, but a potential visit to Michigan in the next few weeks could give the Wolverines a chance. Calhoun is a 3-star, the #48 cornerback, and #483 overall in the 247 Composite.
Chance Fitzgerald - WR - Nolensville (TN) Nolensville: Fitzgerald is a 6'3", 184-pounder with offers from Auburn, Louisville, Minnesota, and Virginia Tech, among others. He's a 3-star, the #67 wide receiver, and #504 overall. He visited Michigan a couple weeks ago but it remains to be seen how much Michigan will push for his commitment.
Jermaine Mathews - CB - Cincinnati (OH) Winton Woods: Mathews has been committed to Ohio State since July 1, and there's no real reason to expect a decommitment at this point. A teammate of Calhoun's (see above), Mathews was offered by Michigan in late October. He's a 4-star, the #27 cornerback, and #214 overall.

Tyler Scott - CB - Mableton (GA) Pebblebrook: Arkansas, LSU, Michigan, and Texas have all offered Scott in the past few weeks, so it's safe to say that his senior film has been impressive. He took an official to Texas and has visits to Auburn and Alabama coming up later this month. He's a 3-star, the #57 safety, and #630 overall.
Darius Taylor - RB - Walled Lake (MI) Western: Taylor has been committed to Minnesota since April 2022, but the pull of the home state Wolverines - and the current 10-0 record - has to be alluring. Taylor is 5'11", 187 lbs. and is a 3-star, the #34 running back, and #481 overall. Michigan is looking for another back to pair with Cole Cabana in 2023, and I do not believe current commit Benjamin Hall will end up signing with the Wolverines when all is said and done.
Rico Walker - DE - Hickory (NC) Hickory: Walker decommitted from North Carolina. He's a 4-star, the #24 edge, and #208 overall. There's no indication that Michigan will be a factor here, but nobody really seems to know where Walker is looking. He did take an official to Maryland over the summer, though.
D'Juan Waller - S - Youngstown (OH) Chaney: Waller is a 6'3", 195 lb. prospect with offers from Marshall, a few MAC schools, and now Michigan. He decommitted from Toledo in late October. He's a 3-star, the #134 safety, and #1582 overall. It would not surprise me to see him grow into an outside linebacker at the next level, but it just depends on how his body develops.
OFF THE BOARD
Fort Lauderdale (FL) Saint Thomas Aquinas linebacker Jayvant Brown committed to Michigan State.
McDonough (GA) Eagle's Landing Christian offensvie tackle D.J. Chester committed to LSU.
Austin (TX) Westlake defensive end Colton Vasek committed to Texas.

Thanks for the recruiting update! Time permitting (and it may not) I'd be interested in seeing profiles of the new recruits (e.g., Ronnie's younger brother) that weren't covered at the time of their commitments.

ReplyDeleteKind of skeptical of tall 3-star WRs -- usually if they have the speed and athleticism you want they are ranked pretty high. It's the short guys that are more likely to be underrated sleepers, IMO. (There are exceptions of course. Like Amarion Walker but given ND and Bama were after him that seemed like more of a ranking sites being off than a legit 3-star type).
Interesting about Hall. I'm not big on taking multiple RBs very often but with Edwards on an NFL track and Dunlop getting passed by Stokes, I'm not sure what the 2024 depth chart is going to look like. Probably worth hedging bets there. Of course these days they can just hit the portal and if there's a an opening for a starter spot (or even top 2 rotation share) at arguably the best rushing program in the country - that would certainly draw interest.
Yep - reading up on Fitzgerald and he sounds very similar to Christian Dixon and a bunch of the Hoke era WRs. Jump balls aren't a big part of this offense (thankfully).
