Morris tore his ACL during the spring COVID season of 2021, which also knocked out his senior season in the fall of 2021. It was a very unfortunate way to finish out his high school career. He enrolled in the spring of 2022, but with some veteran receivers ahead of him and having missed a year of football, it was unlikely he was going to play much last season. He played in eight games and caught 3 passes for 25 yards.
There have been some rumblings this spring and summer that Morris is going to have a breakout fall. He played with J.J. McCarthy in high school, so they already have a built-in connection. Michigan lost leading wide receiver Ronnie Bell to the NFL Draft, so the team needs to replace his production. Morris has a decent chance to be the starter in the slot, but I don't see that position turning out the numbers that Bell had (62 catches, 889 yards, 4 touchdowns) with Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson returning on the outside. It's also possible that Michigan uses running back Donovan Edwards a little more in the passing game after he had just 18 catches for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns last season. Johnson will be gone after 2023 and Wilson could be, too, so perhaps 2024 will be a bigger year for Morris.
Prediction: Part-time starting slot receiver; 20 catches, 240 yards, 2 touchdowns
One of the young players im excited to see step into a bigger role. Bell and Wilson each played slot and outside so I expect more of the same from Wilson, Morris, Clemons and anyone else who steps into the rotation
ReplyDeleteWe have a lot of potential, but haven't seen much production, and probably won't this year. Morris got on the field in 22, so that's something ... Clemons is Mr Spring Hype ... Oleary is a fan favorite ... only so many balls to go around, and we have two returning starters, plus two TEs who will get attention ... and that RB7 dude specializes in catching the ball ... we're also a run first, run often Offense

DeleteThe difference between a pass heavy and a run heavy offense is not all that big. Like sparky Anderson used to say about MLB. You win 60 you lose 60, it's what you do with the other 42. In football you run 4 out of 10 times and pass 4 out of 10 times. 1 of 5 plays change the narrative. But it's still 1 in 5 plays.
For how much you focus on running backs carrying the ball it's pretty notable that that only happened 28 out of 75 plays against TCU. With a big lead it's going to be more of course but harbaugh is not a fool. Michigan is a balanced offense. They call plays to fit for context. Osu will run a lot with a big lead too.

It is true. I sent you the link. 2022 was the only season we didn't get to 40% passing or higher.
DeleteBalance does not mean a perfect split of 50/50. Balance means doing both and being in the 40-60% range is doing both. Harbaugh is firmly there in his time at Michigan and has been there every year except for one where he was at 39.something percent. If you want to say that means that RBs running is the thing that matters above all else that's on you. Except you've been saying that well before 2022 so you don't actually think the 40% point is very meaningful at all.
No lies told. Harbaugh is doing what he wants to do - which is win games. He is a Bo disciple so he wants to control the game on the ground, but he's also a QB who knows that balance is important.
