Tyson Robinson, Wolverine

Brandon (MS) Brandon running back Tyson Robinson

Brandon (MS) Brandon four-star running back Tyson Robinson has committed to Michigan. He chose the Wolverines over Alabama, Arizona State, Miami, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and others.

Robinson stands 5'9" and weighs 199 lbs. As a junior in 2025, he ran 165 times for 1,050 yards (6.3 yards/carry) and had 24 catches for 295 yards, scoring 9 touchdowns. He missed four games due to injury. When he was a junior in 2024, he ran 176 times for 1,295 yards (7.3 yards/carry) and 24 touchdowns, adding 42 catches for 668 yards and 10 scores.

Michigan offered Robinson back in June 2025 when the previous staff was in charge, but running backs coach Tony Alford stayed in place and maintained the relationship. The Wolverines have long struggled to get players out of Mississippi, but the combination of Alford and the recent run of productive rushing seasons for Michigan running backs made Michigan an enticing option.

Robinson is a compact, explosive back with good vision, balance, and quickness. He sets up his blocks nicely, shows nice acceleration coming out of his cuts, and has nifty, nimble feet. I like that he plays some wildcat quarterback for his high school team, because it shows the coaches trust him to take snaps behind center. He’s also a legitimate receiving threat out of the backfield, not just on dump-offs, but on downfield throws.

Robinson lacks elite speed and probably won't be a legitimate breakaway threat like Donovan Edwards or Justice Haynes. His size may also be a thing to watch, because it may be an issue when it comes to pass protection.

Overall, Robinson is a good prospect who looks like a solid #2 or #3 option. I'm not sure he would be ideal as a #1 back, but if you pair him with a lead back and make Robinson a third-down back or change-of-pace guy, he could be fun. There are elements of his game that remind me of De'Veon Smith, Karan Higdon, and Vincent Smith all wrapped into one.

Robinson gives Michigan its first running back commitment in the 2027 class. Despite struggling to recruit Mississippi for a long time, Michigan landed linebacker Kaden Catchings in the 2026 class and now has Robinson in the fold for 2027.

Here's the potential depth chart when Robinson arrives in 2027:

  1. Jordan Marshall (Sr.)
  2. Savion Hiter (So.)
  3. Bryson Kuzdzal (RS Sr.)
  4. Micah Ka'apana (RS Jr.)
  5. Donovan Johnson (RS So.)
  6. Jonathan Brown (So.)
  7. Tyson Robinson (Fr.)

  1. Why the difficulty in recruiting out of Mississippi? Is it because the two big in-state schools, along with the surrounding SEC powers all troll that patch?
