    Update on an ex-ex-Wolverine now in the NFL -- after getting himself drafted Matt Hibner caught his first pro pass for the Ravens in week 1.

    For those that don't remember Hibner sat out most of his senior season in 2023 to red-shirt but kept practicing with the team and returned in the post-season for mostly special teams duties. Michigan wanted him back in '24 but he chose to get out from Loveland's shadow and transferred to SMU.*

    Looking back on the 2023 TE room you had 5 NFL draft picks:

    Barner, A.J.
    Bredeson, Max
    Loveland, Colston
    Klein, Marlin
    Hibner, Matthew*

    Even the 6th guy (former walk-on Josh Beetham) went on to be notable contributor at Georgia Tech.

    The TE room from the previous season in 2022 had a couple other NFL draft choices in Schoonmacher and All. Plus a couple guys who were good enough to get NFL camp invites in Luis Hansen (who ended up starting at UConn) and converted OL Joel Honigford.

    Colston Loveland and Marlon Klein sticking around in 2024 really masked what has been an epic drop off in the TE room during Sherrone Moore's tenure. The Un-Harbaughing was swift and severe. From 5 or more NFL guys to starting a former walk-on FB and a German DL position-switcher at the TE position is really something.

    As an aside, I'd like to note here the contrast in approach between how Hibner went about his "business decision" to gain an extra year of eligibility on a playoff-bound team and this --other-- example.

    The common elements:
    +senior
    +solid player but 5th on the depth chart behind better NFL-bound players
    +able to get a 5th year if electing to not play
    +on an undefeated team headed for the playoffs
    +likely to seek transfer for playing time next year

    This is a big difference in approach, and in my eyes character, resilience, priorities, willingness to work, etc. DM got one catch in a game and quit on his Indiana team before the start of conference play, never to return to the program. To me this reinforces all the criticisms that Cignetti voiced in the spring and summer before the season (after CONVINCING DM he wanted him to stick around in the winter).

    Meanwhile, Hibner was transparent with the coaches about his desire to get an opportunity outside of Barner/Loveland/etc shadow but just kept showing up and working and getting better every week without any expectation of immediate reward or accolades or attention. The coaches wanted him back after 2023 and knew they probably would lose him -- but they played him anyway, even with a national title on the line.

    Some might focus on Hibner's modest statistical production at Michigan (2 catches for 15 yards over 4 years) and dismiss him or even call his performances pathetic but he was part of a championship culture for 4 years and, to me anyway, embodied THE TEAM THE TEAM THE TEAM mindset even while factoring in his own individual needs.

    I don't know Hibner but I know he graduated a wolverine with a national championship ring, 3 big ten titles, and 3 wins against OSU. Seems like a #michiganman to me. Even if he went to grad school elsewhere.

    I bemoaned his departure from the roster prior to the 2024 season. For Michigan that was likely a moot point as they had Loveland, Klein, and Bredeson still (and no QB who could throw to them anyway). But I do think it might have been an indicator of the loss of culture to see a guy like Hibner walk away and then after the season McCulley get prioritized as a roster addition for 2025. I wonder if this ever would have happened under Harbaugh or if Harbaugh would have said "thanks but no thanks" to anyone who quits a football season and his team in that way.

    Happily, the "good guy" won out in this case as Hibner is playing on Sundays.
