  3. You could probably make a half-decent MAC team with the guys who have left. Filiaga/Carpenter/Rumler is a good start for an OL. Milton, Charbonnet, Jackson, Martin give you some skill position talent. No TEs because we hog all those LOL. You'll just have to manage with 10 personnel.

D is a little spotty but Lewis, Sims, and BVS give you some talent. A good coaching staff and a strong walk-on program and this team might be be feisty against the powerhouse in Ypsilanti.

  4. Rodriguez suffers his first loss of the season in a rather convincing fashion. A quick scan of the box score shows Tulsa racked up 621 yards of total offense to Jacksonville State's 295, and most of that was passing: 457 yards to J State's 87. Jacksonville State did better Tulsa in rushing (208 to 164). Jacksonville State turned the ball over three times (2 fumbles, and 1 INT). Tulsa didn't turn the ball over at all.

This is Rodriguez's first year at Jacksonville State, so there's some room for granting leeway to get the team put together. The big question is whether Rodriguez has evolved his offensive philosophy since 2007. I recall watching the 2007 WVU Mountaineers and how they played, and to my eye he didn't evolve much going to Michigan, then Arizona. I'm not a fan of Rodriguez, so I'll admit to a bias. I just don't think he's moved on from what worked in 2007.

    1. In general, I think he has evolved when it comes to the passing game. But it should be noted that JSU is an FCS school, while Tulsa is an FBS program. A loss probably should have been expected, although I'm not sure what the spread should have been.

  5. The Eric Gray photo formats as huge on my screen. Those eyes are intense! I might be slightly frightened right now.

I'm still having an imaginary battle in my brain between Gray and Charbonnet. Gray decommitted from UM after Charbonnet signed on but I always thought Gray would be a better player (based purely on the scouting reports and size difference). But Charbonnet was super impressive early at Michigan so then I thought he'd take it. Now the race is too close to call. Both have transferred, both have very similar production in yards and ypc. Gray's a better receiver, Charbonnet has more TDs. Charbonnet is projected to go higher in the draft but both are expected to be drafted.

I think that was Jay Harbaugh recruiting those guys.

    1. Wish I had access to their ROE stats!

Someday - probably 5-10 years away from being readily available if MLB is any indicator.

    2. They're completely different backs. I like(d) both of them. Charbonnet is more the traditional running back, and Gray is more of a scat back. It would be nice to have those two as a 1-2 punch, kind of like Haskins and Corum last year.

    3. Agree - I like both of them.

Disagree on the differences. Of course they aren't identical but this is not Bush/White on USC where one guy outweighs the other by 40 pounds and runs between the tackles while the other catches passes and runs mostly outside. They're both do-it-all RBs who do the same stuff - run / catch / block.

Charbonnet is faster, leaner, and has twice as many receptions on the year. He's a better pass blocker too but that was true when he was a freshman. Gray is more compact; the weight difference is 10 pounds. I'm not sure what you mean by scat back other than height.

If Gray's comp is Corum -- he's our goalline back and that's going great. He's doing all the Haskins things because he's got Haskins job -- RB1. Doing the job slightly differently but same job. He's not a "scat back" and never was. Edwards was used in a more focused role last year - but he was a freshman and RB3.

Bottom line is that they are both ZC and EG are feature backs that do-everything for their teams. They transferred so they could have that role. Of course feature back these days means sharing snaps and carries most of the time so they are both in rotations, but just like Corum and Haskins and they can do anything you ask.

    4. I also disagree that it would be nice to have them. I like Corum and Edwards better. I prefer guys who stick it out to the ones that transfer.

  6. 11 tackles as a DE? Wow. Aaron Lewis was making some plays.

Thunder, thanks once again for putting this column together.
