2022 Season Countdown: #99 Connor Jones

Connor Jones (image via Freep)

Name: Connor Jones
Height:
6'7"
Weight:
285 lbs.
High school:
Monument (CO) Palmer Ridge
Position:
Offensive guard
Class:
Freshman
Jersey number:
#60
Last year:
Jones was a senior in high school.
TTB Rating:
65

Jones was offered by Michigan in September of 2020 when Ed Warinner was still Michigan's offensive line coach. Warinner put in a fair amount of work in Colorado, and that paid off with the commitment of Jones in December of 2020. After Warinner left Michigan prior to the 2021 season, I wondered if new offensive line coach Sherrone Moore would still push for Jones, but he held steadfast in his commitment, signed his National Letter of Intent in December 2021, and enrolled early at Michigan in January 2022.

My initial read on Jones from his commitment post (LINK) is still something I stand by. He can be slow to get out of his stance, doesn't move very well, and isn't as aggressive as I would like to see. Jones made an appearance in Michigan's spring game, and he looked overwhelmed and slow to react. That's not unheard of for a lineman who should be finishing up high school, but it certainly doesn't look like he'll be much of a factor early in his career. I think a redshirt is virtually a guarantee in 2022.

Prediction: Redshirt

Miami (FL) Gulliver Prep cornerback Daniel Harris (image via Hudl)

2023

Daniel Harris - CB - Miami (FL) Gulliver Prep: Harris is a 6'2", 175 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State, among others. He's a 4-star, the #31 cornerback, and #311 overall. He will be at Michigan on June 4-5 for an official visit. Harris is a teammate of 5-star wide receiver target Jalen Brown.

Malik Muhammad - CB - Dallas (TX) South Oak Cliff: Muhammad is a 6'0", 170-pounder with offers from Alabama, Michigan, Texas, and Texas A&M, among others. He's a 4-star, the #6 cornerback, and #42 overall.

2022 Season Countdown: #100 Jerome Nichols

Jerome Nichols (image via MGoBlue)

Name: Jerome Nichols
Height:
6'0"
Weight:
224 lbs.
High school:
Detroit (MI) Renaissance
Position:
Linebacker
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#50
Last year:
I ranked Nichols #98 and said he would be a backup linebacker (LINK). He did not play in any games.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Nichols is a walk-on linebacker at a position that is lacking proven depth. While Junior Colson is virtually guaranteed to be a starter this season, the backup inside linebackers will probably be some combination of Nikhai Hill-Green, Mike Barrett, and Kalel Mullings. There appears to be a chance that Mullings will spend some time playing running back this fall, and the coaching staff does not seem to think Barrett is a good fit on the inside unless it comes to an emergency.

So inside linebacker is a thin position, and the backup ranks will have to come from unproven scholarship players like Jimmy Rolder, Jaydon Hood, Tyler McLaurin, and Joey Velazquez; or from walk-ons. I doubt Nichols will burst onto the scene but he could start to work his way onto the field as a special teams player.

Prediction: Backup linebacker and special teamer

2022 Season Countdown: #101 Will Rolapp

Position:
Wide receiver
Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:

Last year:
I ranked Rolapp #123 and said he would be a backup wide receiver (LINK). He played in two games and caught 1 pass for 26 yards.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Just like Andrew Russell, whom I posted about earlier today (LINK), we're getting into the walk-ons that I think will play a role this fall. Rolapp does not have great size or speed, but he's a smooth runner and pass catcher that I have watched a little bit whenever the opportunity arises. He made the travel squad to go to Maryland last year, which is where he got an opportunity to make a nice 26-yard catch from backup Alan Bowman in the blowout.

I don't expect Rolapp to factor into the regular rotation this season, but he's perfectly capable of taking some late game snaps.

Prediction: Backup wide receiver

2022 Season Countdown: #102 Andrew Russell

Andrew Russell (image via Twitter)

Name: Andrew Russell
Height:

Weight:

High school:

Position:

Class:

Jersey number:
#43
Last year:
I ranked Russell #120 and said he would be a backup safety (LINK). He played in three games.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Okay, right here are #102 is where I started running into some difficulty. This is the demarcation line between walk-ons who probably won't see the field (or will barely see the field) and some walk-ons and scholarship guys who may see the field for a few games or play special teams roles. Most walk-ons so far either didn't play last year or played in just the blowout of Northern Illinois. Russell, however, played in the first three games of the season on special teams and also has decent size at 6'2" and 191 lbs.

With the depth at safety, it's going to be very difficult to crack the rotation on defense. However, playing special teams is always a possibility, and Russell could carve himself out a larger role with the experience he gained last year.

Prediction: Backup safety and special teamer

2022 Season Countdown: #103 Mica Gelb

Mica Gelb (image via Twitter)

High school:

Position:
Offensive guard
Class:
Redshirt junior
Jersey number:
#50
Last year:
I ranked Gelb #105 and said he would be a backup offensive guard (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Gelb is a walk-on lineman who spent his first two seasons mired on the bench before getting rewarded in 2021 with an appearance against Northern Illinois. With Michigan's depth on the offensive line - and the requirement for developmental time - there typically isn't much opportunity for walk-ons to play unless they're starter-quality players, such as Andrew Vastardis. While different packages can bring in tight ends or offensive lineman, and while walk-on defensive backs or receivers can play a lot of special teams, a guy like Gelb won't get much of a shot to get on the field on game days. But when it comes to practice time, someone like Gelb can be valuable on the scout team and keep some scholarship guys fresh.

Prediction: Backup offensive guard

2022 Season Countdown: #104 Mathew Harrison

Class:

Jersey number:

Last year:
I ranked Harrison #111 and said he would be a backup wide receiver (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Harrison is yet another walk-on wide receiver who earned a little bit of playing time in 2021, along with everyone else against Northern Illinois. They're all hanging out here in this sub-100 area because if there are 10 walk-on receivers, it's difficult to separate one from another. The truth is that walk-on wideouts are only going to play in maybe two or three games, and mostly when the game has already been decided.

2022 Season Countdown: #105 Sam Staruch

Jersey number:
#84
Last year:
I did not rank Staruch. He did not play in any games.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Staruch was probably not on very many fans' radar before the spring game, and maybe not even then. An unused walk-on receiver so far in his career, Staruch caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Alan Bowman toward the end of this year's spring game. He was uncovered in the left flat, so Bowman got a quick snap and flung the ball out to the left, where Staruch easily side-stepped a flailing tackle attempt and walked into the endzone. I don't think Staruch will see the field much, if at all, this fall but it was a nice moment for him to score a televised touchdown in front of some live fans.

Oh, and he was also the guy whose touchdown celebration was a keg stand, so there's that.

Prediction: Backup wide receiver

2024 Recruiting Update: May 25, 2022

Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph's CB Omillio Agard

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2024

Omillio Agard - CB - Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph's: Agard is a 6'0", 170 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, and Penn State, among others. He's a 4-star, the #6 cornerback, and #45 overall. St. Joseph's is the alma mater of former Michigan offensive lineman Jon Runyan, Jr.

Shakir Collins - LB - Adelanto (CA) Adelanto: Collins is a 6'2", 210-pounder with offers from Florida State, Texas A&M, and Washington, among others. He's a 3-star, the #26 linebacker, and #360 overall.

KingJoseph Edwards - TE - Buford (GA) Buford: Edwards is a 6'5", 242 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State, among others. He's a 4-star, the #7 athlete, and #58 overall. Buford is a powerhouse program that produces FBS talent on a yearly basis, including former Michigan running back Christian Turner (now at Wake Forest).

Last year:
I ranked Maddox #102 and said he would be a backup quarterback (LINK). He served as a student coach.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Maddox is a decently talented quarterback prospect who has yet to see the field at Michigan. For unknown reasons (to me), he spent last season as a student coach. I won't speculate on why that was, but it is likely that after missing a season of football, he is probably not much further along in his development than he was prior to that point. I like his talent and think he could be a valuable scout team option, but that's probably his approximate ceiling for this year.

2022 Season Countdown: #107 Jake Thaw

Last year:
I ranked Thaw #118 and said he would be a backup wide receiver (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Thaw is yet another solidly talented walk-on wide receiver. Since he has yet to play a down at Michigan, I want to take this opportunity to test out a theory. Is there a chance that walk-ons could be phased out of playing time at big-time programs? For example, if NIL deals are now running the sport, a 4-star receiver is not going to want to lose out on playing time to a 0-star walk-on when that could be a chance to make a big play, score a touchdown, and increase his visibility. Late in a 40-point blowout, a freshman like Darrius Clemons might be able to establish himself for a future NIL deal by scoring a 70-yard touchdown, but if the coaches empty the bench to play someone like Thaw, that could affect Clemons's bottom line.

This is not specific to Thaw and Clemons (they're just examples), but I wonder if coaches might start making on-field and depth chart decisions based on NIL.

2022 Season Countdown: #108 Christian Bartholomew

Last year:
I ranked Bartholomew #115 and said he would be a backup wide receiver (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Bartholomew enters into his third season and has played in one game so far in his career. That one game was against Northern Illinois, a game in which Carl Grapentine and Dave Ablauf also participated. I do think Bartholomew has better speed than Grapentine, but Ablauf will be battling him for sixth string wideout.

2022 Season Countdown: #109 Peyton Smith

Last year:
I ranked Smith #96 and said he would be a backup quarterback (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Michigan seems to have built up a pretty solid quarterback room. In a way, I think some of the walk-ons are more impressive than some of the scholarship players. Smith has potential and value as a scout team player, but with so many scholarship quarterbacks on the roster - and Davis Warren seemingly moving up the ranks - I don't think that Peyton Smith is going to get much of a shot, at least not in 2022.

Prediction: Backup quarterback

Detroit (MI) King QB Dante Moore

Dante Moore - QB - Detroit (MI) King: Moore is a 6'3", 195 lb. prospect with offers from Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, and others. He's a 5-star, the #3 quarterback, and #5 overall. Michigan is not really pursuing any other quarterbacks in the 2023 class, so they have all their eggs in the Moore basket, so this is an important visit for the Wolverines. Right now the crystal ball leader is Notre Dame. At this point I think this recruitment is a formality, honestly. My hunch is that this is one final hurrah for Michigan and a chance for Moore to say he gave it every chance before he goes ahead and commits to Notre Dame. Hopefully I'm wrong.

TTB Rating:

I was very impressed with O'Leary when he came out of high school. As a preferred walk-on, he is/was unlikely to every make a huge impact, but he's one of the more impressive wide receiver athletes I've seen come to Michigan as a walk-on. Right now Michigan's wide receiver room is stacked, but if some injuries or blowouts happen, I could see him making a little bit of a name for himself and carving out a role.

Last year:
Boutorwick was a senior in high school.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Boutorwick is a preferred walk-on long snapper who was chosen for the Under Armour All-American Game, which I imagine is a pretty big deal. I mean, it's certainly a big deal for him to be a UA All-American, but Boutorwick is a long snapper and I have no ability to judge long snappers. Kornblue Kicking has him as the #11 long snapper in the class of 2022, which is a 4-star to them . . . and sounds good . . . except a 4-star to Kornblue means they peg him as an FCS or Division II player. But Under Armour chose him as one of its two long snappers.

So I have no clue, but I hope he's good. Regardless, William Wagner returns as Michigan's starting long snapper, and he's backed up by Greg Tarr, who might be good but who knows because he was a 5-star but hasn't played in two seasons on the roster. My totally unfounded and pointless hope is that Michigan does not need its third-string long snapper at any point in 2022.

Insert a shrug gif here.

Tiberia was a highly productive running back at Allen Park in high school, but that was a few years ago. He walked onto the team and has not played in the past two seasons. Michigan needs running back help from a walk-on or two, considering they only have four scholarship backs. Last year four scholarship backs and four walk-on backs carried the ball. If last year shows anything, it will probably be Leon Franklin as the top walk-on, but Tiberia will have a chance to play.

Way Too Early 2023 Depth Chart: May 2022

Erick All

I know this is a very, very early depth chart, but I think it's interesting for two reasons:

  1. It's fun.
  2. It shows what positions Michigan needs to recruit in the 2023 class.

The following depth chart has removed these listed players from the 2022 depth chart due to expiring eligibility, even though some could return with a fifth year or COVID year exception:

  • QB Alan Bowman (graduation)
  • WR Ronnie Bell (graduation)
  • WR Cornelius Johnson (graduation)
  • WR Mike Sainristil (graduation)
  • TE Erick All (graduation)
  • TE Luke Schoonmaker (graduation)
  • OL Ryan Hayes (graduation)
  • OL Olu Oluwatimi (graduation)
  • DE Taylor Upshaw (graduation)
  • DT Julius Welschof (graduation)
  • LB Michael Barrett (graduation)
  • CB Gemon Green (graduation)
  • S German Green (graduation)
  • P Brad Robbins (graduation)

It also assumes that every currently rostered player and every currently committed prospect will be here in 2023, which is obviously not true.

Michigan's Top Seven 2023 NFL Draft Prospects

Blake Corum (image via MGoBlue)

The following players (listed in alphabetical order) are Michigan's best bets, in my opinion, to be drafted in 2023. Jim Harbaugh's Michigan teams have produced 6.3 NFL draft picks per class during his tenure, so it's a good bet that Michigan gets around this number of players to be selected.

TE Erick All
Senior Erick All was reportedly considering leaving the NFL after the 2021 season, but he decided to return. After a 2020 season in which he struggled with drops, he turned into a reliable target with 38 catches (second on the team) for 437 yards and 2 touchdowns, including a game-winning catch-and-run against Penn State. All is a solid blocker with good speed and run-after-catch ability, and he has a lithe 6'4", 245 lb. frame. He probably won't be first round material, but he could be a day two or three pick.

2022 Season Countdown: #114 Noah Stewart

Noah Stewart (image via Local Sports Journal)

Position:

Class:
Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number:
#61
Last year:
I ranked Stewart #121 and said he would be a backup offensive tackle (LINK). He played in one game.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Stewart is a massive offensive lineman who's very narrow and a little bit raw. When he came out of high school, he looked like an oversized tight end. Despite being in college for a couple years, he is still listed at only 274 pounds on Michigan's spring roster (he was 240 coming out of high school). At his height 274 is still way too light to be a legitimate option on the offensive line, and he needs to get into at least the 290s before talk of getting on the field much is warranted.

Prediction: Backup offensive tackle

2022 Season Countdown: #115 Josh Beetham

TTB Rating:
N/A

And now we get to the class of 2020 quarterback that everyone thought would turn into a tight end: Dan Villa- . . . Josh Beetham! Yes, Beetham graduated in the class of 2020 but did not join Michigan's football team as a walk-on until 2021. He was a 6'5", 220 lb. pocket QB in high school, which naturally seems to lend itself to a transition to tight end. (Full disclosure: Beetham originally committed to Illinois as a preferred walk-on in 2020, but then ended up in Ann Arbor a year later.)

I might be underrating Beetham here, because he joined Michigan's team in 2021 and played against Northern Illinois. That's pretty impressive to play as a walk-on in your first season. However, Michigan has such depth at tight end that I have a hard time seeing him move up the ranks too much, especially when another walk-on (Carter Selzer) is already seeing a fair number of snaps. Perhaps Beetham will be the Carter Selzer of 2023, but for now, I think Beetham is probably going to stay off the radar most of the time.

Prediction: Backup tight end

Review of 2014 TTB Ratings

Ben Gedeon (image via MGoBlue)

Keep in mind that the ratings (fully explained here) are intended to project how players will fare at Michigan and, to a certain extent, in the NFL Draft. I do not take into account how players will do once they get to the NFL or how they will pan out if they transfer to other programs. I will give myself a grade of 1-5 like a 5-point grading scale (5 is best, 1 is worst) for each player; I reserve the right to give myself an incomplete if the guy never even got a chance to get on the field. I’ll work down the list from highest to lowest with a brief career recap for each player:

100

100: Jabrill Peppers - S - Paramus (NJ) Catholic
Peppers was a jack-of-all-trades at Michigan, playing running back, slot receiver, quarterback, linebacker, cornerback, safety, kickoff returner, and punt returner at various times. He ran for 239 yards and 5 touchdowns; caught 10 passes for 82 yards; averaged 26.8 yards on kickoff returns; averaged 13.1 yards on punt returns with 1 touchdown; and made 123 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, and 10 pass breakups. He was a 1st round pick (#25 overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft, taken by the Giants.
Prediction accuracy: 5. Peppers was a Heisman finalist and a 1st rounder.

90-99

93: Drake Harris - WR - Grand Rapids (MI) Christian
Harris had a bunch of injury issues that at least factored into disappointing production. After redshirting as a freshman, he made just 9 catches for 60 yards and 0 touchdowns in a Michigan uniform, even switching to corner at one point just to try to see the field. He played his final season at Western Michigan (27 catches, 255 yards, 1 TD)
Prediction accuracy: 1. It's hard to feel too bad about this one, considering hamstring issues caused him to miss two full seasons (his senior year of high school and freshman year of college), but it's still a miss.

2022 Season Countdown: #116 Bryce Wilcox

Bryce Wilcox (image via Newman Times-Herald)

Name: Bryce Wilcox
Height:
5'11"
Weight:
171 lbs.
High school:
Sharpsburg (GA) Trinity Christian
Position:
Safety
Class:
Freshman
Jersey number:
N/A
Last year:
Wilcox was a senior in high school.
TTB Rating:
N/A

Wilcox is another high-level preferred walk-on who turned down an offer from Navy to pay his own way to Michigan. A pretty dynamic wide receiver and defensive back for his high school team, Wilcox could play safety or wide receiver at the next level. He's as good as or better than the walk-on receivers who have played at Michigan in recent years. If you watch his highlights below, you'll see some big hits, some nice blocks, and some tremendous balance and change of direction with the ball in his hands.

As a freshman preferred walk-on, he's very unlikely to play in 2022, but he is a guy with the talent to get on the field in the coming years, particularly on special teams.
