  1. "Caratan punted 6 times for 274 yards (45.7 yards/punt) in a 59-3 loss to Tennessee." Those two things -- punts per game, and a loss to the opponent -- are correlated. :-)

I went to cfbstats-dot-com and looked up Michigan's punting. They're punting 2.6 times on average per game, which puts them near the bottom of the list sorted by punts per game (the leader is Iowa at 6.8 punts per game). To be listed in the national leaders by player for punting, the punter has to appear in 75% of the games played, and Doman does not appear, which means there were some games where Michigan didn't punt at all.

It's a funny thing ... to be considered a "great" punter by some standards, you have to be on a team that *needs* to punt occasionally. If you're a great punter on a GREAT team that never punts, you're an obscurity.

    1. If punting attempts were like time of possession people would argue that you should control the game by punting less and point to how few times we punted as the reason we were winning.

  2. Everytime I read this column, I always think how in the world did we let Xavier Worthy get away. This guy is legit and he returns punts too! To think he even stayed in AA for one semester only to be ignored…

    1. Yeah, Worthy is a game-changing type of athlete. Off the top of my head, I think he's also 2/2 or 2/3 passing. I'm pretty sure he threw a TD in 2022 and had like a 35-yard completion earlier this year. So he fills up the stat sheet in a lot of ways.

    2. Last I saw on this was Worthy was on campus but not very long before it was sniffed out that his academic credentials were dubious. My take was that it was a disconnect between the athletic department and admissions. One that went WAY too far.

Worthy's family was (rightfully) indignant that things had not been communicated properly. Admissions will get the heat from football fans but IMHO it's an institutional issue of different branches of the same organization not being aligned.

Worthy is a big talent that would be - without a doubt - beneficial. We are still in great shape though with Wilson, Edwards, and Morgan providing some overlapping skills.
