  1. Remember when we used to care about scholarship counts?

  2. Yeah, this kind of stuff has become nearly impossible - if not pointless - to track

We have no idea who will be QB1, 2 or three next year, let aloneness our OL

We could lose a chunk of the homegrown depth on Thunder's list, and probably will

  3. Add Deyvid Palepale - #106

  4. Thinking about scholarship vs. NIL ... I don't think scholarships are considered "taxable income," but I'm pretty sure NIL money is. I wonder to what degree NIL deals are structured to provide for the payment of taxes, or if -- at least right now -- it's assumed the recipient is aware enough to set aside money for tax liability?

    1. Great question. I imagine they are either getting a helpful deduction as a set-aside or at least some basic financial counseling to say "expect this bill due". I believe 1099-Misc can have deductions taken.

  5. Our RS Junior class is not exactly promising. Only 2 minor contributors there.

    1. Somewhat true...but those are the same kids who signed with McCarthy, Edwards, Colson, and Rod Moore. So it was a solid class. Plus that group includes a likely starter next year (El-Hadi), a starting punter (Doman), and a solid defensive tackle (Benny). Crippen, Guy, and McBurrows could also play big roles next year, depending on how the roster shakes out.

    2. El Hadi started 3 games last year and will likely start more next year, pending decisions by a bunch of the (more) veteran OL. I think McBurrows was already a contributor this year. Doman and Benny, definitely. That's 4. Andrel Anthony was contributing before he left as well.

In many ways the 2021 class is getting the short end of the stick. The 4 classes before them all got the benefit of an extra year due to blanket COVID years. After losing their senior years of high school they also get hit with that whammy when they arrive in college.

But the bigger factor is that they are the first class to come in during the portal/NIL/free agency era of college football. The market is still in flux so to speak. Very few people and programs have figured out how to funnel money to players and very few players (relatively) have figured out how much leverage they have.

Now we see '23 guys like Dante Moore cashing checks for signing and then immediately after the season moving on -- you can't really blame them. We also see guys like Hausman cashing in on their surprising production. These things were not done in '21 and they certainly aren't done at the level they will be in '25 and beyond.

Crippen and El Hadi (and probably Anderson too) would be starting at about 90 other programs. At Michigan they are sitting behind 3 guys pulled from the portal and some NFL players induced to return via NIL. This is the new world.

The 2020 class is going to produce something like 10-12 contributors altogether. That's OK, not great, but frankly I think that's going to be the high water mark for a while as the Portal continues to grow and our ability to pull freshman and sophomores from other programs becomes at least as important as our ability to land guys out of high school.
