2022 NFL Draft Results

The 2022 NFL Draft has wrapped, and here are the Michigan-related results:

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was taken in the 1st round (#2 overall) by the Detroit Lions.

Safety Daxton Hill was taken in the 1st round (#31 overall) by the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.

Outside linebacker David Ojabo was picked in the 2nd round (#45 overall) by John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens. Ojabo would almost certainly have been a 1st round pick if not for a torn Achilles suffered at Michigan's pro day.

Running back Hassan Haskins was drafted in the 4th round (#131 overall) by the Tennessee Titans, where he will have a chance to run behind former Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan.

Offensive tackle Andrew Stueber went to the New England Patriots in the 7th round (#245 overall), joining former Wolverine Michael Onwenu on the offensive line. Outside linebacker Joshua Uche and inside linebacker Cam McGrone are also with the Patriots.

Undrafted free agent signings include:

• DT Chris Hinton to the New York Giants
• DT Donovan Jeter to the Pittsburgh Steelers
• LB Josh Ross to the Baltimore Ravens
• DE Luiji Vilain, who transferred to Wake Forest, to the Minnesota Vikings

Michigan's NFL Draft History

Probably like many of you, I occasionally have a hankering for some Michigan NFL Draft history. Below you will find (as far as I'm aware) every pro draft pick in the history of Michigan's football program going all the way back to 1937.

A few little factoids:

• Michigan's only two #1 overall NFL Draft picks are Jake Long in 2008 and Tom Harmon in 1941.
• Michigan set a record in 2017 with 11 total draft picks.
• Michigan's record number of 1st round NFL draft picks is a tie with 3 each in 1995 (Tyrone Wheatley, Ty Law, Trezelle Jenkins) and 2001 (David Terrell, Steve Hutchinson, Jeff Backus).

It's NFL Draft time! The draft starts tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. EST. Here is a look at the various Michigan players eligible for the draft.

Aidan Hutchinson, DE
Captain and all-time season sacks leader Aidan Hutchinson will be the first Wolverine off the board. At 6'7" and 260 pounds, Hutchinson showed off good (not great) speed with a 4.75 forty at the Combine and also has elite quickness with a 4.15-second 20-yard shuttle. His arms are considered to be a little short (32 1/8"), but that doesn't seem to be limiting his draft stock. In general, he's considered to be nearly a lock to go in the top two to the Jaguars or Lions.
Projected round: 1st

Daxton Hill, S
At 6'0" and 191 pounds, Hill is a little bit small for a traditional safety role. However, his speed (4.38 in the forty) and athleticism (10'1" broad jump) are tantalizing and he's a willing and able tackler in the open field. He could be a starter from day one, especially as a nickel corner. Scouts seem to like his man coverage abilities, and he could also be a major asset on special teams. Most projections seem to have in the bottom half of the first round, and he's battling with Notre Dame's Kyle Hamilton to be the first safety off the board.

Goodbye, Daxton Hill

HIGH SCHOOL
Hill came to Michigan in the class of 2019 out of Tulsa (OK) Booker T. Washington. He was a 247 Composite 5-star, the #1 safety, and #14 overall. He committed to Michigan in September 2019, flipped to Alabama in early December 2019, and then flipped back on National Signing Day. I gave him a TTB Rating of 100 (LINK) and gave the following quote:

Things I dislike about Hill: *crickets*

COLLEGE
Hill started three games as a freshman and made 36 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries, and 4 pass breakups; he also caught a pass on a fake punt to gain a first down against Army. I thought that would be foreshadowing for him being a two-way player or a returner at some point in his career, but that didn't happen. He became a full-time starter in 2020 when he made 46 tackles, 1 interception, and 5 pass breakups. We finally saw him spend a full, real season as a starter in 2021, when he was somewhat unleashed as a safety/slot corner who made 69 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, and 11 pass breakups. For his efforts he was named a 1st Team All-Big Ten player by the conference's coaches.

2022 Season Countdown: #117 Hunter Neff

Position: Tight end
Class: Redshirt junior
Jersey number: #80
Last year: I ranked Neff #116 and said he would be a backup tight end (LINK). He did not play in any games.
TTB Rating: N/A

Neff is an undersized tight end at 6'2" and 237 lbs. So chances for him to get on the field are pretty slim. Michigan has also stacked up a pretty talented tight end room with a couple starter-quality seniors and several 4-star backups. Perhaps Neff can help replicate a fullback on the scout team or play on special teams, but as for playing time on offense, I wouldn't expect to see #80 out there much at all.

Prediction: Backup tight end

2022 Season Countdown: #118 Joshua Luther

Last year: I ranked Luther #117 and said he would be a backup defensive back (LINK). He did not play in a game.
TTB Rating: N/A

Luther is an undersized walk-on corner who was an all-state player at Clarkston, but he didn't join the football program at Michigan until his third year on campus. The last time you saw him - if you recognized him - was probably when freshman wide receiver Darrius Clemons beat him for a long touchdown pass in the spring game. At his size he's probably a career scout team player.

Prediction: Backup defensive back

2022 Season Countdown: #119 Alexander Lidback

Position: Linebacker
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #46
Last year: I ranked Lidback #128 and said he would redshirt (LINK). He redshirted.
TTB Rating: N/A

Lidback is a player who, as I mentioned last year, could be a program guy who works his way up the depth chart throughout the years. He has good size overall (though he probably needs to add bulk since 223 lbs. is a tad light when you're a 6'3" linebacker) and some talent. Despite Michigan's lack of proven depth at linebacker, Lidback is probably still on the outside looking in. If he sticks around for another two or three years, he might be able to get on special teams and perhaps play as a backup.

Prediction: Backup linebacker
