Way Too Early 2021 Depth Chart: January 2021

Aidan Hutchinson: Will he stay or will he go?

The following depth chart has removed the following players from the 2020 depth chart for various reasons:

  • C Zach Carpenter (transfer to Indiana)
  • RB Zach Charbonnet (transfer to UCLA)
  • WR Nico Collins (NFL)
  • TE Nick Eubanks (NFL)
  • RB Chris Evans (NFL)
  • DT Carlo Kemp (NFL)
  • FB Ben Mason (NFL)
  • LB Cam McGrone (NFL)
  • K Quinn Nordin (NFL)
  • DE Kwity Paye (NFL)
  • RB Christian Turner (transfer)
  • C Andrew Vastardis (NFL)
  • DE Luiji Vilain (transfer to Wake Forest)

It also assumes that every currently rostered player and every currently committed prospect will be here in 2021, which is obviously not true.

Hit the jump for the depth chart.

  1. Not a bad roster though I'd like to see some reinforcements from the portal over the months to come.

Assuming McDonald influences personnel decisions it maybe notable that most NFL teams have a 5th DB in the majority of the time. Been true for years but the difference keeps growing.

  2. Need a better option at Center. Barnhart maybe?

DT is a huge need, and while I am hopeful for NSD, we need help now. Portal is the best hope

LB could use help - disaster in 2020

CB was a weakness. While anyone can see our stats improved, teams also realized they didn't have to throw to beat us, because our DL & LBs were bad too. Doubt there's anything in the portal good enough - and eligible to come in/be accepted

Kicker! How many scholarship Kickers have we had under JH, 3? Were any of them good?

  3. Glad that Donavan Jeter is staying. They NEED him on the DLine. A couple national spirts writers are saying this will be Mazi Smith's break out year. But really, I dont pay too much attention to sports writers

  4. My 2 cents on portal needs:

OC and CB probably could most benefit from some proven veterans to solidify the units. I know they like Attenberry but he's real young to be the guy at maybe the most important position on the OL.

CB really needs a couple more guys to pop alongside Green and Gray who stabilized over the season. A transfer could really help as could somebody like Seldon stepping up.

Edge is another spot that could use help with Hutchinson being the only really proven guy at DE. That said they have a lot of options in McGregor, Ojabo, BVS, and a bunch of unproven kids with talent to choose from. This is a spot where a freshman or transfer can help right away (like CB). It's also a place where you can be flexible based on personnel.

DT is fine. Hinton/Jeter/Smith/Welshof will be vets. Morris and Jenkins coming. 4 recruits in this class so maybe 1 pops early. "So many missed opportunities" over new years yet the spots are filling up with good options.

LB is fine. Usually 2 true LBs on the field not including a quasi-DB or edge guy and you've got Ross and Barrett returning as starters.

We'll see who pops up on the portal but so far you're not seeing many better options than what we have (e.g., Hawkins, Ross, Jeter, Filiaga). Instead we see high end players leaving Michigan at positions of depth (like RB and QB) and other schools very glad to pickup our scraps.

It's not so horrible as some make it out to be.

    1. Lol, nooow it's okay to talk portal

DT is not fine. It's so not fine, our DC got fired, and recruiting strategy did a 180 for the position

LB sucked. Maybe that's because of how bad our DL was, but that position group is far from fine. Both returning starters have a lot to prove to meet their own NFL aspirations

    3. So you want to talk to Lank again? No problem JE, I'm hear to meet your emotional needs.

Don Brown recruited Benny and Rooks. And Smith and Hinton too. No 180 they just managed to close the deal and flip a guy from Colorado too.

    4. Michigan needs more DBs they can count on and more edge guys who can make an impact. They don't need more traditional LBs as that is only 1 or 2 positions anyway and Ross and Barrett are solid at worst.

NFL data says there are 5 DBs most of the time. Mgoblog wrote an article about 5-1-5 defenses. So if there guys like Hudson and Peppers in the portal go get em. Or Uche - go get him too. Otherwise we're probably good at LB.
