Taylor Groves, Ex-Wolverine

Taylor Groves

Cross Plains (TN) East Robertson safety Taylor Groves decommitted from Michigan earlier this week. Groves committed to the Wolverines sight unseen shortly after Maurice Linguist was hired to be the cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator.

Michigan has done well recruiting the safety position in recent years, but Groves seemed like perhaps a new direction for the position. He is tall and lanky (listed at 6'2", 175 lbs.) with cornerback skills. Michigan has generally seemed to reel in shorter, thicker, quasi-outside linebacker types for safety, aside from Daxton Hill.

Groves is the third decommitment in the 2022 class, joining safety Myles Rowser (Arkansas) and defensive tackle Alex VanSumeren (undecided).

  1. I liked this pkayer. But I think he saw it is goi g to be very tough competing for a DB job now with these fantastic players coming in.

  2. I know this is off topic, but I looked at some mock drafts, and they have Mac Jones going at 3rd pick to SF. SF gave up a lot to move up to 3. One article compared him to Matt Ryan, and talked about the success Kyle Shannahan had with him when he coached at Atlanta. That struck a note with me, I mean the comparison to Matt Ryan. I think Mac Jones is going to turn out to be much better than most people think.

Mock drafts also have Justin Fields falling way out of the number 2 pick. Maybe down to 11.

    1. Matt Ryan was a better athlete coming out of college than Mac Jones, IMO. And if you can get to the Super Bowl with Jimmy Garoppolo, I don't think you need to move all the way up to #3 to get a QB with mediocre physical skills.

I think it's a reach to move up to #3 for Mac Jones.

    2. One article has the 49ers taking Trey Lance at 3. I never saw him play. So I watched his highlights. He definitely can run. But I didnt see him threading needles, and whizzing out patterns. His accuracy on long passes is suspect. I can't see why that writer would think the 49ers would teade away two 1st round picks to take him. I can see how Shannahan and Jon Lynch would do it to get Mack Jones. I dont know if I would trade that much to get him. I now from what you said before that you would take those two 1st round picks and move down to let someone else get Mac Jones. But he played so great this year, especially in the National Championship. Something like 342 yards in the 1st half. He may have had 600+ if Alabama hadn't started slowing things down and running more. Someone that can run a high octane offense that well is extremely valuable. I can see him fitting in well with the 49ers. Garopolo didnt play well at all on the big stage in the Super Bowl. Honestly, he just didn't have it at the big moments, like players like Joe Montana. Someone like Mac Jones, who played maybe his best at the big moments, might be why he 49ers want him.

    3. Alabama quarterbacks have had ridiculously good production for years. Tua Tagovailoa had a higher passer rating in 2019 than Mac Jones in 2020. I think both are/were overvalued.

But even if I'm wrong that BOTH are, what are the chances that Alabama has two picks worth that much in back-to-back classes? Odds are that if Tagovailoa is good, Jones isn't. And if Jones is good, Tagovailoa isn't.

Either way, I don't think either one is going to be Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, etc.

Furthermore, you brought up Joe Montana. Montana's most famous play is probably the Sprint Right Option that he threw to Dwight Clark. And a big part of what made Montana special is his ability to move. Jones can't move like that. He ran a 4.85 forty at his pro day, which is probably more like a 4.95-5.00.

    4. I think Jones is better than Tua.
      I think Montana ran a 5.1 forty.

    5. I don't know what Montana's 40 time was, but I know he could get out on the edge, move in the pocket, etc. He wasn't Steve Young, but he could move a little bit. He averaged 3.7 yards per carry in the NFL and scored 20 career rushing touchdowns.

Also, regarding 40 times, a 5.1 in 1978 was different than a 5.1 is in 2021. Defenders are bigger and faster now. A guy who runs a 5.1 these days is going to get chased down in no time. A guy who ran a 5.1 in 1978...averages 3.7 yards/carry and scores 20 rushing touchdowns.

    6. The only QBs I'd draft this year:
      1. Mac Jones
      2. Trevor Lawrence

      And in that order.

Tine will tell if Im wrong about Jones. But who he is now is fantastic. I think that's going to continue at the next level, unless he's on a bad team that's going no where.
