Zack Marshall, Wolverine

Carlsbad (CA) Carlsbad tight end Zack Marshall committed to Michigan way back in August 2022. And since I was in the throes of fall camp for football, I didn't write up a commitment piece at the time . . . and then it slipped my mind until now. Marshall picked Michigan over offers from Arizona, Cal, Utah, and Washington State, among others. He signed with Michigan in December and enrolled in college in January.

Marshall is listed at 6'4" and 220 lbs. His Hudl profile lists him with a 4.79 forty, a 4.41 shuttle, a 32" vertical, a 265 lb. bench press, and a squat of 315 lbs. As a senior in 2022, he caught 23 passes for 284 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Perhaps the reason that I forgot so easily about Marshall's commitment post was that when I reviewed his film, very little jumped off the screen about him. Marshall has just average height (6'4") and size (220 lbs.). His listed speed of a 4.79 in the forty does not sound like anything special, and indeed, when watching him on film, he is unable to separate in man coverage or show much burst. After catching the ball, he does not show much of an ability to break tackles or any niftiness to elude defenders.

The best things about his film are that a) defenses forget about him at times and b) he displays good hands to catch the fastballs thrown by his quarterback (Alabama commit Julian Sayin) and dig out some low throws.

Overall, Marshall seems like a guy who could contribute at a program like Michigan mainly because the offense requires the use of many tight ends. With players like Carter Selzer, Joel Honigford, and Max Bredeson playing large roles, there could be a place for Marshall. But does Marshall appear to be head and shoulders above those guys as an athlete? No, he does not.

Michigan has two tight ends in the 2023 class, where Marshall joins Deakon Tonielli. The only other player to come to Michigan from Carlsbad High in California is walk-on lineman Joey Burzynski, though offensive tackle Erik Magnuson came from nearby La Costa Canyon High School.

  1. Thanks for doing this, Thunder. If you have time (whenever) I'd appreciate similar posts on guys (e.g., Kendrick Bell) that you didn't have time to cover earlier.

  2. Not too exciting but I guess you put him in the system and see if you can build him up into a quality player.
