We're losing a ton at OL ... wow. Let's get to the NCG this year!
ReplyDeleteThere's a chance that guys like Keegan, Barnhart, Jones, and Hinton could return in 2024 because of redshirt/COVID year exemptions, so there's still some hope that all that experience might be able to stick around for one more year. There are some who think Hinton might be a backup this year and then have a coming out party in 2024.
DeleteAgree with Thunder. We don't know. The COVID stuff is getting closer to getting cleaned up which will provide some incremental clarity. A few years off still but even then, offsetting that is portal participation and NIL influence continuing to rise. College free agency is here and there's no contract stipulations that require multi-year commitments from kids and a lot of marginal guys are going to find, like Hunter Dickinson that their labor has more value in the NCAA than in the pros.
Deletei havent closely followed - are they strictly enforcing participation guidelines again such as 85 total scholarships? have they backed off concessions offered to teams/students during covid?
ReplyDeletejust curious if they need to resume processing out certain upperclassmen in years 3-4 as grad transfers
Teams are back to being limited to 85 scholarships. However, NIL deals mean some players can pay their tuition and still be on the team without really having to pay out of pocket like they used to do. COVID exemptions are still being offered to players for 2020; in other words, 2020 does not count against anyone when it comes to eligibility.
DeleteThere is no relationship between participation guidelines and scholarships. Michigan could field a team filled with walk-ons if they wanted to.
DeleteAs for grad transfers I don't think there is any change. The player has to be valuable enough after 3-4 years to stay on scholarships, because those are still limited and will affect the size of the recruiting class.
