MLive: Early mock drafts have Funchess as 1st round pick

Yes, it's way too early for this sort of thing, but a couple websites project tight end/wide receiver Devin Funchess as a first rounder if he leaves following his upcoming junior year.

Hit the jump for Russian model Svetlana Bilyalova. She's one of my top few favorites.

  1. There is no freaking way he goes in the first round.

    He has great size.

    He has average speed.

    He has below average hands.

If he left this year, I imagine he'd be picked up in the 3rd round, 2nd round ABSOLUTE TOPS.

    1. I agree with this.

Let's see 2014 be a year where Funchess makes the clutch catches, drops very few, and makes more than few stretch catches where the ball isn't quite perfectly thrown. Then his draft stock rises because he becomes the guy who can be counted on to move the chains.

I love Funchess ... I'm very happy he plays for Michigan ... but right now he's not YET a guaranteed go-to guy. A very good go-to guy, but not a solid go-to guy.

    2. Don't get me wrong, I like Funchess on the team as well. I honestly believe his hands will get much better this year too. But there is something that isn't going to change that much from his soph to junior year, and that's his speed. He looks like a mid 4.6 kinda guy.

But Kelvin Benjamin went in the first round this year. 6'5" 230 pounds with a 4.61 40.

He fell at 28, and he had 15 TDs and 1000+ yards this season.

      I don't know, I just don't see it.

    3. Don't see what? Funchess going first round under any circumstances?

If so, I mostly agree with that as well ... unless Funchess sprouts wings and does just amazing things. But I doubt that will happen. Your assessment seems reasonable -- good, solid matchup problem receiver as a low 2nd or high 3rd pick.

    4. Not sure if we are watching the same player here? Funchess is fast. UM did not really take advantage, and the issue is clouded by Funch playing lazy on occasion. But he got past a lot of CB's on fly-routes. PSU and Minny did not have corners who could run with him. That's pretty unusual for a guy that big. Not to mention he converted from TE mid-year.

Hopefully he can clean up the drops this year and put more effort into his blocking. But the NFL loves big receivers now and the guy will easily pass the eye test with NFL scouts.

    5. He won't get past NFL corners. He's fast ... he's not that fast. Plus, I wonder how many times the corners stayed up to contain Gardner in case he flushed and ran?

I think two things have to happen for Funchess to go to a 1st round type of guy ...

      (1) Michigan's offense has to take a lot more advantage of him, and
      (2) He's got to step up and make the catches ... particularly catches when he's got some corner hanging all over him

Bottom line ... I think we're all in violent agreement that Funchess is a heck of a receiver. The only real debate is whether he'll be a guy teams would spend a 1st round pick on.

  2. he had some questionable drops last year. but, i think a lot of you are forgetting how baffling we found that last season. as a freshman, he had very few drops, and often caught passes most players wouldn't been able to get to, let alone hold onto if they could have. 2014 will be a year to find out which one he really is. for now, i'm betting that this is a mental, concentration issue rather than a physical issue.
