Yeah, definitely want to look at landing spots after spring ball is wrapped up, across the country
ReplyDeleteThere was so much hope wrapped up in so many of those names. But things did not pan out like we thought they would. I still think the team started to get off track when the coaching heart of the offense, Jedd Fisch, left. Then the end of Jim Harbaghs first coaching chapter here started to end when the coaching heart of the defense, Greg Mattison, left. But thats just my view on it.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of what happened, mow Michigan is off on a new chapter.
Here's to much better days!
I'm with you on Mattison but Pep Hamilton's offense was better than Jedd Fisch's. I thought Fisch was a good hire given his position (co-OC) but the idea that there was some period of glory with Fisch that Michigan never got back to is myth. It was an antiquated system (back when we thought we were going to look like Stanford) with lots of TEs and FBs. I was all in on it but even Nick Saban is imploring people that it's time to move on and it was many years ago.
DeleteMichigan has justifiably moved on to more modern approach, first with Hamilton and now with Gattis. Not intended as an endorsement of Gattis but rather a recognition that's Michigan recognized the old way (with Fisch) wasn't the path forward. The dream of the 90s is over even at Stanford.
Fisch was fine for what he did - get Michigan's offense to stand up on it's feat after the Hoke-era debacle but that's all we can say about the coaching vagabond.
We'll see how he does in Arizona. My guess: Don Brown gets the defense on its feet quickly but the offense struggles to execute NFL concepts. A couple years of treading water thanks to a strong D and then it's on to the next guy for Arizona and on to the next gig for Fisch.

I don't even know where to start with what you say about Jedd Fisch and Pep Hamilton. Did you see the 2016 Ohio St game?
DeleteFisch's gameplan in 2016 wasn't very good. There were 2 TDs in regulation and one was setup by a short field (22 yard drive). It was a defensive battle but that's still bad, and it came off a 2015 season where Fisch's schemes (aided by the great QB - lol - Jake Rudock) resulted in 1 offensive TD.
DeletePep Hamilton did FAR better against OSU, even with the handicap of starting OKorn in 2017 they ended up with 3 TDs that year, and then in 2018 there were 5 TDs.
If ever there is an example of Peps superiority it is right there.

I don't think it was the Jeff "system" that was better, at least not statistically. What I liked about 2015-16 offense is that at least the coaches, players and fans had an idea what they were trying to do. To this day - 4 seasons since transitioning - I have no idea what we are, or how we put defenses in conflict
ReplyDeleteMaybe this year will be different? Who knows
