  1. Jedd Fisch is making some progress at Arizona: #46 nationally in scoring offense, and #38 in scoring defense, and a 5-3 record. I've watched precisely zero Arizona games, so I'm not really sure what fuels that team. But good for him.

    1. Arizona is officially feisty. Hat's off to Fisch. I was skeptical.

    2. I've watched a little bit of Arizona, and they're fun to watch. Not great or anything. They have an accurate QB who was kind of a big deal coming out of high school, and I like their running back. Like Lank said, they're feisty.

  2. Interesting situation with Giles Jackson. They had planned to red-shirt him after a pre-season injury but then he was back for the Oregon and OSU games and the plan was "on hold". But UW is set to lose their 3 starting WRs so could still benefit from having a vet like Jackson in '24.

So GJ was a healthy scratch against Stanford and still has just the 2 games played on the season. Coaches are openly saying they want Jackson back next year (for year 6) and are looking at the red-shirt...but they play ranked opponents each of the next 3 weeks and then have an Apple Cup game to close the year...and then the post-season.

Interesting one to me. I think most programs would just burn the red-shirt and not worry about it. Washington may be making calls, during the game itself, to figure out if they want to use Jackson or don't need him. Almost like an over-taxed relief pitcher in baseball.

  3. Harbaugh does a great job with hiring assistants generally but it seems like he sometimes needs a sanity check - like Enos and Schemmy. Those additions/near additions were immediately critiqued and resulted in consensus head-scratching. Seems good those things didn't work out.

    1. Don't forget one...Connor Stalions! I mean, he wasn't an assistant, but then again, neither was Schemmy.

Probably the weirdest one, though, was former Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop, who was on staff for a year...but never coached a game. I still don't know what happened with Shoop, whether it was a medical issue or some kind of legal/personal issue.

    2. Connor who? Never heard of him.

  4. Thunder, I am curious to hear your take on the sign stealing issue. It seems one hell of a coincidence that Michigan’s most successful seasons coincide with these allegations. Do you think the success in the past 2 seasons was linked to the sign stealing?

    1. I started a post on the sign stealing...

...and then with new info coming out every day, it was just too difficult to keep up with.

First of all, I think stealing signs can be a HUGE advantage. And I'm talking about the "illegal" kind where you film opponents at their games, not the in-game or TV copy stuff. The "everyone does it" thing only really applies to...you know...what EVERYONE does, which isn't as elaborate as what Connor Stalions is alleged to have done.

Second, I don't think Michigan's success is necessarily connected. Michigan was already good under Jim Harbaugh prior to COVID. (NOTE: I have been on record since 2020 saying that season was a fluke, and I put zero stock in 2020 whatsoever. There are a lot of people who wanted Harbaugh gone after that year, and I was definitively not one of them.)

Aidan Hutchinson, D.J. Turner, Daxton Hill, all these guys getting drafted to the NFL and playing well are proof that Michigan can identify and develop talent.

IN MY OPINION, the truth is that Michigan built a recruiting and development structure based on Harbaugh's success in 2015-2019 to bring in "next level"-talented players who would then buy into the process because they saw what happened with their predecessors. Now Michigan is kind of in that Alabama/Georgia tier (not quite because they haven't won a championship, but close) where players are buying in because they believe in the process. And if you can get talented kids who buy into the transformational-not-transactional idea, you're going to have a chance to do great things.

    2. Write the post.

I have to agree that some of the "sign stealing doesn't matter" takes out there fall on deaf ears. I didn't play college football but enough guys who did are saying they won games by stealing signs that it seems obvious that it CAN make a big difference. That said, it is legal to do it. That part tends to get lost in the shuffle with our rivals and in the press. It sounds bad: STEALING!. Stealing is bad. It should be called what it is: sign scouting.

The part that is (probably) unknowable is how much incremental advantage it is to scout signs in person vs just going off tape. It is very obvious to me that this in-person rule is completely obsolete in the smart phone era. Michigan would get an army of volunteers to engage in sign stealing and put it on youtube for free if they put it out there as something they wanted. And it wouldn't be illegal at all.

So this is really a formality in my mind... except for the part about any game(s) that Stallions attended in person. This is clearly against the rules whereas getting game tape isn't. How much does it matter to get in person scouting vs conventional scouting that occurs via tape? I would guess not very much but let's be real - the cameras on TV are NOT focused on getting the others team signs. The "sign tape" is going to look a lot different than the TV tape, all-22, etc.

Ultimately. sign stealing is scouting. We're in trouble for scouting beyond the prescribed limits. It does remind me of when we got in trouble for stretching. That's innocuous at face, but it's also clear that extra stretching allowed for extra practice. This IS AN ADVANTAGE. An incremental one, but a real one. Calling it "stretchgate" is mischaracterization IMO - Michigan was pushing the limits to get however many extra minutes of practice time they could get.

Harbaugh is clear about pushing the limits and going the extra mile to get that edge. This is an extension of that mentality. I don't know if any of the staff knew if/how Stallions was going the extra mile, but that seems like the key issue now. Was it Stallions alone? Or was he encouraged/supported to break the rules? Even if he wasn't directly told to do it I think there's a plausible argument that Harbaugh supports a culture of pushing the limits. Barring evidence otherwise, this is a JE-level reeeeeeeeeeeach.

      --------------------

The bit about changing outcomes -- yeah that's obviously BS when OSU, TCU, and presumably others KNEW we were doing it in 2022. When we are whipping up on Northwestern and Indiana sign stealing doesn't matter either - be serious. Sign stealing - and again we mean more specifically being incrementally better at sign stealing due to advanced scouting of signs -- doesn't change the fact that Michigan has elevated under Harbaugh in many respects. We were already elevated in 2016, for those not paying attention. (JT was short!)

But can any of us be sure it didn't flip a game we won narrowly in 2021 or 2022? I don't think we can say that for sure.

I am not a fan of "both sides" arguments all that often, but in this case it seems like some Michigan apologists out there are not recognizing the fact that this is advantageous while Michigan haters are dramatically exaggerating how much of advantage extra sign scouting is.

      ---------------

A couple bigger picture things are clear:

OSU/Ryan Day are ninnies tattling to the teacher because they lost. If you don't want to be called SOFT you don't do stuff like this.

The PR firm handling this is CRUSHING IT and should be the biggest winner by far.

Michigan should have done this first. There have been rumblings for years about Michigan "investigating" OSU's various forms of cheating so maybe the PIs MIchigan hired suck or maybe they just aren't as well funded. Maybe OSU just got so worked about about losing to Michigan that their fanbase/alumni are bank-rolling a much bigger effort. Regardless - it worked for them. It didn't work for us. That bites.

  5. Thanks Thunder. While I agree with you, I find it hard to believe that Harbaugh does not have an inkling that such a thing is happening under his watch. I liken it to being a CEO of a bank and one of your trader is always placing the right bet before an announcement. At some point, you have to suspect something.

    1. Yeah, I think somebody knew, and based on the HC ultimate responsibility rule, believe Harbaugh is likely to face some level punishment

I'm not sure I agree with Thunder on this one. As Prime says, you still gotta stop the play. Everyone knows Hurts is gonna get a tushpush (except when he didn't!), but even professionals can't stop it. We had a hammering panda & a bench mason ...

If the NCAA really considered removing this rule, and only put it in place bc some schools couldn't afford it, the advantage is limited

      Story is overblown IMO
