Davis was a high school teammate of running back Cole Cabana and had quite a standout high school career. Some Michigan fans may not have heard of him, but over his final two seasons at Dexter, he made 200 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 12 interceptions, 16 pass breakups, and 5 forced fumbles. He was named all-state as a senior and was ranked as a 2-star prospect by 247 Sports. Upon joining the program in 2023, he was named Scout Team Defensive Player of the Week three times and earned the same honor for special teams once. For a walk-on freshman, that's a pretty solid start.
When I originally did this ranking, Michigan had lost Keon Sabb to the transfer portal and had not yet landed Wesley Walker and Jaden Mangham to replace Sabb and the injured Rod Moore, so I had bumped up Davis. Considering the transfer portal replacements, maybe Davis shouldn't be in the top-100 just yet, but oh well. I think he does have a chance to be a solid special teams player and perhaps play a role in the defensive rotation sometime down the road.

ReplyDeleteAssuming he has good grades, I always wondered why kids like this didn't go and play in the Ivy or the Patriot league. The schedule and demands are much less, you get a more balanced academic experience, you actually play, and you come out with a good degree from a small elite school.

In that case, if you take a long (that is, post-football) view, UM is an easy winner for a Michigan resident. I'd be open to an exception for Harvard, Yale, and just a few others. I wouldn't be open to any Patriot League schools that aren't service academies. The ROI just isn't there. It's not even close.
ReplyDeleteIvy league schools don't have "athletic" scholarships they have just scholarships that go to gifted athletes, so they are basically athletic scholarships.
DeleteAre those schools worth full freight? Hell no. But they would get a free ride.
Ran into a Chelsea, Michigan guy at a wedding who saw Dexter lose to both
ReplyDeleteChelsea and Saline. He liked Davis a lot. Thought that the worst thing about him was that he was a little too eager to hit somebody. There are worse issues to have on a football field.
