Where's the focus & priority on TALL Receivers?
ReplyDeleteOn the Michigan football team.

Nope, but that was a good read considering the submarine Moore has established . Some takeaways from this and last week's MGoPodcast:
DeleteLots of chatter of McCulley being a "thousand yard Receiver" ... It's been a looong time in Ann Arbor, so I'll believe it when I see it. But it does bring up the question: is this based on just McCulley's height, or because he's also an all around UPGRADE to our abysmal 2o24 WR room?
Also from mgopodcast: "McCulley sounds like he's going to be WR1 and NOBODY ELSE IS CLOSE." That reads like he's ... BETTER
There's talk of leveraging contested passes. In order to win contested passes, a WR has to be more than just tall. He has to be good too (hands, physical, speed/quickness/agility to get to the ball). We didn't have any of that last year
In the TIGHT END section, they opine "there isn't another Colston Loveland"
But McCulley is a Wide Receiver, and the only one generating any buzz. No one is expecting him to match a Wolverine legend & 1st Round draft pick
Can he replace small & unproductive WR Tyler Morris? Uh, of course, and not just because of height. I'd bet that McCulley surpasses Morris 2o24 stats in early October, and CAREER stats by November
We ADDED size to the WR room, but not at the expense of other attributes
WR stock is UP:

Thanks for your contribution "Anon"
It can be simply based on Underwood and Lindsey improving the passing game overall and a lack of other good options. We already know that McCulley can put up good stats in the context of a bad team with a bad offense. We already know that he got benched on a good team with a good offense.
DeleteAs Moore continues to fail to replicate Harbaugh's formula at WR (and offense as a whole) it's very possible that a mediocre player can put up impressive individual counting stats. To give an example -- Karan Higdon ran for 1000 yards and was probably the least impressive starting RB in the last few decades at Michigan.
Tristan Keys is coming back too. Nalin Scott and Paris Melvin as well
ReplyDeleteNone of these Receivers are ONLY tall. None are very big at all
Emphasis does not mean sole focus/priority

Hi Lank ... I mean, An0nYm0uS
Deletethat doesn't read ONLY or SOLE ...

You have had it explained to you multiple times that the priority being put on height doesn't mean you'll never see another short WR again. Every time you point out that Michigan is RECRUITING (LOL but not getting) short WRs or actually landing them you prove only that you are arguing with yourself. Because no one said Michigan would not recruit anything, nor did anyone say it was the end of short WRs on the roster.
DeleteEven you framed the key question as what was being ADDED to the room, in relative terms. Relative to 2024 WRs only, that's height (McCulley and the 2 freshman). Factoring in Loveland playing mostly WR...it's nothing.
The meaningful measure for Moore is relative to 2023 (Harbaugh). There there's a loss of speed and skill and experience and talent replaced with... height. The room is a little taller but it's less talented, slower, and not as good at getting open. Moore wants to add height and Moore is adding height. Just like he said.
Here is your reference point, the pinnacle of the Harbaugh era:
Wilson
Johnson
Morgan
Morris
Clemons
O'Leary
Moore
English
Goodwin
Moore has made the room taller. By doing so, emphasizing that one thing, the WR room is not as fast, skilled, or talented as it was under Harbaugh.
The still have and will continue to have short WRs on the team. Nobody ever said they wouldn't. The emphasis, the priority, that's the whole point. Hoke emphasized height too, but he had short WRs too. Harbaugh didn't, but he had tall WRs too. Moore is returning to Hoke thinking and departing from Harbaugh thinking. Emphasis on height and contested catching vs emphasis on toughness, speed, and getting open.
With Hoke emphasis on height was a bad idea that worked out poorly for
Michigan football.

What OTHER emphasis is Moore adding besides height. If that's not the "sole" emphasis what is the other emphasis?
DeleteWhat has he ADDED since 2023?
