Ohio had lost to Rutgers in week 1 by three points on a late field goal, and the betting line for the WVU-Ohio game showed WVU a 3.5 point favorite. I was somewhat surprised by that, but I guess the odds-makers knew a thing or two because lo-and-behold Ohio beats West Virginia, 17-10.
ReplyDeleteThe box score for that game has some interesting things:
- Ohio turned the ball over three times, yet still won
- Ohio dominated time of possession, 40:15 to 19:45
- WVU's 3rd down conversion rate was only 15%
It's going to be interesting watching WVU's season unfold. With the coaching change in the off-season, the roster turned off a lot of players. I'll be interested in seeing how that team does over time, and whether we see improvement.
Ditto Jedd Fisch at Washington ... a lop-sided win in a cupcake game ... does he keep things going, or is there a ceiling that will be revealed.
The same can be said for Michigan, of course.
I wouldn't put WV & Washington in the same bucket. RR sucks; Jedd has a fantastic RB in Coleman, Williams is better than most QBs we'll face this year, and both Boston & Roebuck are better WRs than we've had under Sheronne
DeleteWhich reminds me: D@MN, I wish we had Andrel Anthony
We've got a lot of P4 starting OL out there who are former Wolverines. We can't expect them all to be successful, but looking at recruiting rankings, their bodies and what Newsome is putting out there, and the writing is on the wall. Our guys are not well coached
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/mizzou-guard-named-sec-offensive-lineman-of-the-week/ar-AA1M8p7r
I mentioned Fisch simply because he was an former coach, not necessarily as a way to lump him and RR together in any way. That said, I'm still interested to see if Fisch can find a higher gear against better opponents.
DeleteFisch has really exceeded my expectations. I don't know if he's going to thrive at UW. I don't know if he does that he won't just go and take the next best job. But I will say that he does but he seems to have that program pointed in the right direction. Hats off to him. With the way he job-hopped I had a lot of skepticism about him leading a program but he seems to be doing alright there.
DeleteSince I appreciate these posts I'll add in one guy.
ReplyDeleteMatt Hibner is still at SMU and has 3 catches on the season for 30 yards. Hibner finished 2024 season really strong so it's a bit of a quiet start for him. But SMU did have a bit of a moral victory by taking Baylor to double OT.
