Al Washington, Linebackers Coach (Notre Dame): Washington remains as the linebackers coach for the Fighting Irish.
Tyrone Wheatley, Head Coach (Wayne State): Wheatley is 0-4 after a 31-14 loss to Quincy.
Utah's offensive stats tell a story: 33 first downs (to WVU's 14); Utah goes 8 for 13 on 3rd down (62%); 3 for 3 on 4th down; 7 for 7 in the red zone; 4 for 4 when goal to go; had an 83% pass completion rate for 290 yards; 242 yards rushing; and held the ball for 9+ minutes more than WVU. In other words, WVU has a lot of work to do on the defensive side of the ball.
ReplyDeleteWheatley ... how long can he possibly hold on?
I'm not an NFL guy. I see Harbaugh is 3-1 with the Chargers, but all the games have been relatively low-scoring, close games. What's the story there ... their defense mostly carrying them while the Charger offense not so hot?
IDK how Wheatley has held on this long. He's been bad at head coaching everywhere he's been. I love(d) him as a player, but I generally think he's not a good coach. He wasn't a good coach in the NFL, I don't think he was anything special at Michigan, and he hasn't won anywhere as a head coach in college (Morgan State, Wayne State).
DeleteI think with Harbaugh it's just the brand of football they play. Some analysts have been raving about how Justin Herbert looks this year, and they figured out how to use Quentin Johnston (the former TCU WR who sucked the past couple years). So now between Keenan Allen, Johnston, and Ladd McConkey, along with Omarion Hampton and Herbert, they have a pretty awesome group of skill guys.
Yesterday the chargers were missing Guard mehki becton
DeleteThat IOL just couldn't do much Harball with their lack of depth
And they've been missing Slater all season.
DeleteI just looked up Mehki Becton ... 6'7" and 364 pounds ... that's a big boy. I didn't think interior linemen were generally that tall. Tackles, yes; but I thought guards were more in the 6'5"-ish range.
DeleteOf all the things I thought I’d see, Cade throwing 46 times for 400 yards was definitely not one of them!
ReplyDeleteAfter quitting on Michigan and then quitting on Iowa, Cade probably came there to put up numbers. He got caught up in a time share and ended up throwing only 15 times a game through the first 3. But now with Jacolby Criswelll hurt, he's gotten to live out his dreams throwing 45 times a game each of the last 2 weeks.
DeleteDown by 4 with 2 minutes to go, the ETSU Bucs last drive ended in a Cade interception. His team is 2-3.
Cade has 6 TDs and 6 INTs on the season and sports a passer rating of 130.
At least McNamara was something interesting to read about this week. Some of the guys some people thought would be interesting this year (Andrel Anthony, Dan Villari, Ben Hall, etc.) have been pretty boring. Anthony hasn't done anything the past couple weeks, Villari has been less involved, and Hall is UNC's third-string running back.
DeleteSo many guys are hurt!
DeleteOf those that are healthy I think Andrel Anthony and Ben Hall are both rather disappointing. But disappointment is usually what you get with transfers out.
Matt Hibner had his first TD catch of the year for SMU but his numbers are still very low at 8 catches for 49 yards....on the season.
I sure hope McNamara has plans for post-college that involve something *other* than the NFL, because he's not going to get near that. Many, many college QBs don't.
DeleteMCNAMARA SUCKS BUT WE KNEW THAT IN 2020. CARRIED HIS ASS IN 2021 BUT TRUTH CAME OUT IN 22, 23, 24, 25. DUDE WAS BORN IN 2000 SO HE'S 25 NOW BUT HE'LL PROBABLY BE BACK GRIFTING CFB PROGRAMS IN 2026 TOO LOL.
DeleteFour guys starting for not terrible D1 programs across the country. That’s pretty good. Kansas no longer being horrid feels odd.
ReplyDeleteLinemen
DeleteI liked Denegal coming in, thinking he had a nice sense about where to place a ball and some touch to go with it. I’m glad to see him having fun on the field. Maybe he isn’t a BIG Qb, but I think he’s at least as good as Drew Allor. lol. I’m sorry, that was mean. I think he’s a better Qb than Allor. Thinking they share that opinion in Unhappy Valley about now.
ReplyDeleteLOL. It was definitely fun to watch Allar on Saturday night lose a game in ways I thought he would lose the game. I do not get the hype about him being the top QB or a top QB in the class. I think a big part of it is that he looks the part of being a Tom Brady or Jared Goff - tall, solidly built, lanky - but he doesn't play like it.
DeleteThe PSU QB before Allar was treated quite badly IMO. Can't remember his name, but he could run around, make plays, hurt you in different ways and fans from day one wanted the Hype Guy. I always thought the run around and make plays guy was pretty good. Not all american or first round pick, but a damn good B10 QB that could win games.
DeleteAllar is mediocre in all respects, to my eye. I mean, a 5 star typically had exceptional ability and I don't see it. His arm is ok. His athletic ability is below average. His accuracy is hit or miss. Decision making and leadership average.
I would take BU right now over Allar.
Hmmm...I guess I'll disagree on Allar. I think he has good talent. He runs pretty well for a big guy and has a decent arm. I don't love him, but it's mostly for his decision making and the fact that his deep ball tends to float.
DeleteSean Clifford was the previous PSU QB BTW.
Our former RBs were worse than I thought
ReplyDeleteBut Haynes? Worth every penny. Outstanding pickup

LMAO, are you comparing the Don - who was on the bench for most of 2o22 - to Haynes, a starting RB? It's September, but Haynes already has more starts than Don had in that entire 14-game season
But uh, okay. Who was Boom-Bust? Don, easy. Loss of yards. 1yd carries. 2yd carries. Falling on contact (and oft without contact). Needed a LB to be converted to RB to take the bruising runs, because the coaches WE ALL TRUST knew his limitations. With Haynes, even if he gets hit at the line, he's dragging MFs for a ride. Mullings-esque, but faster
Hahahahahaha, too easy!
#gotellthunder
GOT IT. LOL. SO LOWER SUCCESS RATE (MORE LIKELY TO -- NOT -- GET THE YARDS NEEDED WHEN NEEDING IT, LIKE 3RD AND SHORT) IS LESS BOOM BUST. HIGHER YPC IS MORE IMPORTANT.
DeleteBECAUSE "BOOM BUST" MEANS WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO LIKE "TOSS UP". FAAAAAAAAANTASY.
HAYNES AGAINST OU GETS A 75 YARDER. 18 FOR 50 BEYOND THAT. LETS TALLY THE BAD ONES SHALL WE? 1 YARD ON 1ST AND 10. SAME AGAIN NEXT DRIVE. 5 YARD LOSS, 2 YARD LOSS, 1 YARD ON 2ND AND 2, 2 ON 1ST AND 10, 3 YARD LOSS. OOF IF THIS WAS DON WE KNOW HOW THE STORY WOULD GO. LOL.

We defined Boom-Bust last September, and you asked for an example. Then I gave you each of the Don's carries against ohio
Delete2.8ypc, behind an OL that won the Joe Moore Award for a second straight year, including a Rimington Center. Oh, and at QB he had a future top1o pick on his 11th Start, two WRs who would be drafted, and the first TE picked in last year's draft
You claimed I cherry picked, so I did the TCU game: 2.9ypc without the Boom, and needed a converted linebacker to take a goal line carry because Don couldn't do it
That's two of Don's three starts, a clear majority that signaled what we ended up with in 2o23 & 2o24 (bust & back to the bench)
Haynes was at 2.7ypc without the Boom, behind an OL that lAnKt0bY questions & criticizes from personnel management to playing time, and had all three IOL pushed back into the backfield at least once, plus a team Captain injured. The QB a TrFR in his FIRST ROAD START, with no pLaYmAkErS at WR and two TEs injured
*you're either lying or stupid: the (-5yds) was on blown blocks by Bredesen/Marshall, not at all on the "p0iNt gUarD" ... the other was one of several screens that were blown up ... either way, you're exposed lAnKt0bY

THE OL LOOKS ENCOURAGING THIS YEAR, AS POINTED OUT EARLY IN THE YEAR. YOU WANT TO HIT THE PORTAL NEXT YEAR. OTHERS SEE GROWTH AND OPTIMISM AHEAD. LAST YEAR IT WAS A CHAOTIC MESS. THE CRITICISM WAS THERE. THIS YEAR NOT SO MUCH. DESPITE INJURIES AT OG THE CENTER AND BOTH TACKLES HAVE LOCKED IN, IMPROVED FROM LAST YEAR. NOT JOE MOORE BUT THE NEEDLE IS POINTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND EVEN WITH INJURIES THERES NO CHAOS LIKE WITH GENTRY OR GIUDICE IN 24. NO FRESHMAN BEING THROWN INTO THE FIRE EITHER THATS A RED FLAG, THO YOU LIKE IT. SO....

I like the kids getting some money for their work but some of the money rumored they are getting seems extreme. Really, even at UM, only the top 5-10 guys are worth more than their scholarship. JAGS. you have to pay top recruits and hope it pays off, so that is a sunk cost. After the top guys, the other guys are getting paid with coaching, scholarships, first class facilities. 70% of the roster is not really worth that, TBH. Guys that would NEVER play in the NFL can get paid NFLish money playing in college. I think Cade was pulling in six figures at Iowa. Beats working insurance for 50K a year 9-5.
ReplyDeleteGood luck paying only 5-10 guys more than scholarship, room and board. Might as well just cut to the chase and join the MAC. lol.
DeleteIn reality you have to pay to keep the guys you developed into starters up from high school, and you have to pay the guys your recruited to be impact players out of the portal. Either way veteran starters are getting paid. If not...you lose.
There's bargains to be had but, usually not for long. Maybe a guy like Bredeson is loyal and not in high demand. Maybe you can get a surprise freshman contribution from a guy like DJ Waller. But if he's good he's going to get paid the next offseason. So Cut The Check.
The old ways are gone or disappearing. It's not the NFL but it is pro football. At least in the Big Ten and SEC.
Basketball is ahead of the curve on this and I think football will follow. You go year by year and everyone is a free agent in the offseason.
Unless they change the rules to incentivize continuity, scholarship, graduation, etc. it is what it is.
The number is more than 5 or 10, but it's not the full roster. The 100+ on the roster partition out into probably three or four tiers of compensation levels. It's NFL-lite, and those with the money to spend will attract the best talent, and those without the money, or not much of it, will fall back to MAC-level teams. Over the next five or so years we're going to see 12 to 18 teams separate from the pack. The next step will be the creation of a super-conference with a big fat media contract, and the road to college football as an NFL feeder program will be nearly complete.
DeleteMichigan will be in that super-conference. It's unlikely Michigan State will.
I think Anon is right about this. It is characteristic of free markets to consolidate and there's not really a lot of controls to level the playing field at this point (like salary cap, draft picks and other elements to encourage parity). It might even be fewer than 12 to 18 who really have the power -- maybe down to half that.
DeleteBut... I don't think they will want to go down to a single super conference. In that scenario youve got top 10 teams hanging around 500. I don't know that that's a ratings optimizer, so I think some of the old system will be retained. 2 super conferences (Big 10 and SEC) may still be the way after some reshuffling. That might look more like pro sports with East/West. There will be some bottom feeders in there like MSU who will be perennial losers but they'll make money on TV, etc. Think Yankees/Royals before the salary cap. Haves and Have Nots.
with scholarships, housing cash, facilities, food, coaching, the average benefit each kid is getting per Grok is 120,000.
DeleteThis was true before NIL as it is now. Nonetheless they were considered to be "playing for free" prior to NIL and many players (more than 5 to 10 on top teams) were getting additional pay under the table. Now that the market is there, guys are going to get paid and that's out in the open.
DeleteTo me it's a bit like complaining about pro athletes getting paid to play kids games. Yes, it's preposterous and ridiculous at face. But we live in a capitalist society and the market is there and the value is there because the sport is so wildly popular. Most have come to terms with the ridiculousness of it and accepted that Aaron Judge makes $50M a year or whatever. CFB is creating a lot of millionaire teenagers. It is what it is.
