Preview: Michigan vs. Central Michigan

Matt Drinkall

I've been aware of Matt Drinkall for a while because of clinics and such. Having spent several years at Army recently, he's very much entrenched in that style of football, which is about discipline and conservative football.

RUSH OFFENSE vs. CENTRAL MICHIGAN RUSH DEFENSE
Michigan is #60 in rushing offense (173.5 yards/game) after two contests and #37 in yards per carry (5.42), based largely on the running of Alabama transfer Justice Haynes (35 carries, 284 yards, 4 touchdowns), who has 75-, 59-, and 56-yard runs already this year. The big question for this phase is the offensive line, which already lost 5-star freshman Andrew Babalola prior to the season and saw left guard Giovanni El-Hadi go down last week against Oklahoma. Even Cal Poly transfer Brady Norton, the starter at right guard, had to leave last week's game at one point, drawing in redshirt freshman Jake Guarnera. El-Hadi will likely miss this week's game, so I would expect Nate Efobi to start this week. Central Michigan is #48 in yards allowed per game (99.5) and #84 in yards allowed per carry (3.98) after a week in which they allowed Pitt to run 26 times for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. That's not an awful performance, but it indicates CMU will probably struggle against a Big Ten rushing attack. Senior inside linebacker Jordan Kwiatkowski (6'1", 235) leads the team with 14 tackles and fifth year senior OLB Dakota Cochran (6'2", 240) is right behind him with 13. Redshirt sophomore OLB Korver Demma (6'3", 245), a transfer from Nebraska, leads the team with 1.5 tackles for loss. The defensive line will be undersized compared to most Michigan opponents. This should be a "get right" game for Michigan's offensive line to continue working on its cohesiveness.
Advantage: Michigan

Hit the jump for more.

PASS OFFENSE vs. CENTRAL MICHIGAN PASS DEFENSE
Michigan is #88 in passing yards per game (196.5) a year after they finished #131. Baby steps! Quarterback Bryce Underwood struggled last week (9/24, 85 yards) against a tough Oklahoma defense, but he didn't turn the ball over. There were some miscommunications with #1 WR Donaven McCulley, but McCulley also pulled in 3 catches for 91 yards, including a leaping catch that he reeled in by squeezing the ball against an unknowing Oklahoma defender. The offensive line struggled in pass protection even though Underwood was only sacked once by the Sooners. Meanwhile, Central Michigan is #133 in pass defense (324 yards allowed/game) after giving up 308 yards to San Jose State in week one and 340 to Pitt last week. Despite the new head coach, CMU was able to retain most of its defense, and every player in the back seven is a senior or redshirt senior except sophomore CB Jaion Jackson (5'10", 160). Unfortunately, that experience appears not to have helped much, although Pitt's Eli Holstein has been a productive player. Up front the Chips have a solid edge guy in fifth year senior Michael Heldman (6'4", 260) who has 9 career sacks.
Advantage: Michigan

RUSH DEFENSE vs. CENTRAL MICHIGAN RUSH OFFENSE
Michigan is #40 in rush defense after facing a couple teams who really like to run the ball, so that's somewhat promising. Oklahoma QB John Mateer was the engine of the Sooners rushing offense, and they won't be facing that level of runner this week. When I look at tackle numbers, I like to see the two inside linebackers leading the way in tackles, and that's not the case with the Wolverines so far. Middle linebacker Ernest Hausmann leads the way with 19 tackles, but then he's followed by safety Brandyn Hillman (12), backup LB Jimmy Rolder (10), and safety Mason Curtis (10); in fact, you have to go all the way to find WLB Jaishawn Barham, who is tied for #8 in tackles with 6. The defensive line is solid, but they couldn't keep pace with Oklahoma's tempo. Central Michigan is #92 in rushing offense (134 yards/game) and they're averaging 2.91 yards/carry (#128). Redshirt sophomore RB Trey Cornist (6'0", 215) is a Tulane transfer who has 23 carries for 113 yards and 1 touchdown, and senior RB Nahree Biggins (6'1", 210) has 27 carries for 112 yards. They rotate three quarterbacks and try to run them, but none of them ever run very far; the most successful is junior Angel Flores (6'1", 210), who has 21 attempts for 48 yards. The offensive line is also in flux.
Advantage: Michigan

PASS DEFENSE vs. CENTRAL MICHIGAN PASS OFFENSE
Michigan is #103 in pass defense (243.5 yards allowed/game), but they're giving up just 5.9 yards/attempt (#48) and their passing efficiency defense is #61. The inflated total yardage number is not indicative of a generally solid passing defense. This should be a bounce back week for the edge rushers who couldn't get home against Mateer, if not also the defensive backs who were close to making some big plays against the Sooners but couldn't finish the job. Cornerback Jyaire Hill struggled in week one, but he played stickier coverage last week. It's unclear if CB Zeke Berry will play this week after suffering what looked like an ankle injury last week, so Jayden Sanders, Jo'ziah Edmonds, and/or Shamari Earls could get the start on Saturday. The CMU passing offense is also pretty weak, with Iowa transfer QB Joe Labas (6'4", 210) leading the way at 16/24 for 145 yards and 1 touchdown. Overall, they're #118 in passing offense (146 yards/game), albeit with a 70% completion percentage, 0 interceptions, and a middling 7.3 yards per attempt. Freshman QB Jadyn Glasser (6'2", 230) is 7/9 for 78 yards, and Flores if 5/6 for 69 yards. Junior WR Tommy McIntosh (6'5", 210) leads the team with 4 catches for 78 yards, and junior TE DeCorion Temple (6'5", 245) has the team's lone receiving touchdown on 5 catches for 36 yards. The game plans appear to be "Protect the ball, make safe passes, and stay in the game."
Advantage: Michigan

ROSTER NOTES

  • Former Michigan running back Chuck Heater is a defensive analyst for CMU
  • Rumors are that former Michigan employee Connor Stalions was employed by Central Michigan at one time

LAST TIME THEY PLAYED . . .

  • Michigan beat Central Michigan by a score of 59-9 in 2013
  • RB Derrick Green led Michigan in rushing (11 carries, 58 yards, 1 TD)
  • Michigan scored 6 total rushing TDs: 1 for Green, 2 for Fitzgerald Toussaint, 2 for Devin Gardner, and 1 for Thomas Rawls)
  • WR Joe Reynolds returned a blocked punt 30 yards for a TD

PREDICTION

  • Michigan 45, Central Michigan 10

  1. Thunder: "Former Michigan running back Chuck Heater is a defensive analyst for CMU."

Bob Ufer: "Ole Fritz Crisler is looking down and saying, 'Oh, that Chuck Heater would have been great in the old single wing!'" I recall Ufer saying that in a broadcast back in 1973 or 74.

  2. Zorich was our DB coach under Harbaugh until he lost his job during the 2020 purge, and took the same position at CMU. I thought he did a good job with our DB's when he was here.

  3. I expected 45-1o, so this was both impressive & fun

Two concerns on OL: seeing Guanara thrown on his butt. Just like we've seen Norton, Crippen and ElHadi get blown back

Early on, CMU blanketed WRs, but run game was still muted. WRs don't get open, and it took awhile for the RBs to get going

    Offense
    Haynes: three games, 3 1ooyd days. 5TDs

I brought this up week1, but Bryce isn't seeing the field. Forcing the Slant to a covered Klein was predetermined; as was his Zone Read (both early)

I do like the 'take off running if it's covered' approach. That is a HUGE improvement ... but GET DOWN please. Hottake1: VYoung 2.o

Marsh had been one mistake after another, costing Marshall his first college TD. Nice to see him make up for it

Goodwin being WR2 and monopolizing snaps is confirmation that 2o24 did not return "playmakers"
Hottake2: Goodwin is Tyler Morris 2.o. Get him matched up against a LB and maybe he makes a play

"wIdE rEcEiVeR" Hogan Hansen climbed a ladder for a contested catch!

Terrible INT by Bryce (not seeing the Safety), but 2o24 "pLaYmAkEr" Kendrick Bell needs to turn into a defender, not unlike Fred Moore v FresnSt. Bell watched the ball like a Punt Returner waiting on a fair catch. That's coaching

WRs getting out of bounds during the 2nin drill was refreshing. That too is coaching too

Yards after contact ... both RBs got it. A tiny bit of room was all it took to get back to SMASH

"pLaYmAkEr" OLeary didn't get in until garbage time. Good

Hottake4: Jayden Davis is Orji 2.o, simply not trusted to pass

Ty Haywood looks like a refrigerator with arms, and moved defenders. If we didn't have a HS JV RB (#36) out there, we'd have an explosive TD
    #RBmatters

    Defense
DT76 in the 1Q again. Kanka got garbage time. What happened to Palepale?

Still no organic pass rush, against a CMU team that rotates OL. Drop Barham in coverage, and the QB has time

    Barham is ANGRY

Hillman wraps up on 4th & 1! PROGRESS

Flores running wild at the end of 2Q ... running QBs may be a problem

A little better for Benny, finally. D.Moore still JAG

Hottake3: Tre Williams is Cam Goode 2.o

    Hottake5: Bowles is Barham 2.o

Freshmen Corners looked okay in garbage time!

    Special Teams
Morgan sucks as PR ... SpTms coach has to make a move

Zavada ... is they sKy fAlLiNg?

  4. Bryce looks better than a lot of young QBs. I don't like it and hated it at the time, but it's highly probable that the coaches protected him from himself in Norman

Dante Moore still getting milked into the game plan, and then gets hot
Sayin had no run game v Texas, and still had training wheels. 2 INTs today

CJ Carr looks promising, but made some bone headed mistakes, fortunate to escape with one INT

I didn't watch Arch, but it the reports are n bueno

DJ Lagway threw his FIFTH pick on a no look, fade away toss ... you could almost hear him say "Kobe"

The aTm QB made plays, threw for +3oo yds, but was tap dancing back up to 1oyds behind the LoS, completing only 45%

With OL questions, injuries at TE and no star WRs, Bryce was spared

Coach Moore just should have started his suspension earlier

  5. Harball is obviously gone. I do not know if the coaches are simply playing to the strength of the team or if there is a change in the offensive philosophy. My biggest question in the offseason is “what is the offensive identity of this team.” I think the CMU game gave us the answer. They want to revolve the offense around Underwood. Remains to be seen if it is going to succeed. He is indeed a special young man.

My suspicion is that we will win big against overmatched team like CMU but we will lose to teams that have strong defensive line who does not give Underwood time to throw (like Oklahoma) or teams with strong secondary who can blanket our receiver.

I am certainly glad the coaches made the switch because the current OL is not good enough to succeed with smash football.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree with these takes. You can't SMASH if you don't have the OL to dominate. Easier said than done of course, it took Harbaugh 6 or 7 years to build up to the 2021-2023 level to where he could execute like he did at Stanford.

The big hope was that Moore could maintain it for a while like Shaw did but the dropoff was immediate. Some of that was inevitable with the turnover after 2023, but Moore has neither maintained the OL development (that started in 2018-2020) nor has been as opportunistic via the portal as Harbaugh was. It's been chaotic.

Bryce is the focus. Agree there too. It would be awesome to just run over people (like in 2021) and use him more selectively, but we are going to be reliant on his playmaking. The rest of the offense is...OK. A lot of JAGs. We'll live and die with Bryce. Hard to see him be the savior as a freshman, but I think they learned some lessons in Norman.

I am not sure how many teams we face will have defenses as good as Oklahoma, and even there we were not dominated. I still put that one on the coaches more than anything else. Live and learn and get better.

      Upcoming games:
@Nebraska - Oklahoma repeat? I'm optimistic the offense can do better.
Wisc - Looks like a fairly safe win with Badgers struggling
@USC - west coast road trips are usually Ls, but USC's defense looks susceptible. Could see Bryce take lessons from Norman and Lincoln and step up.

The plus side of not being dominant like '23 is there are a lot of intriguing/entertaining games coming up.

      GO BLUE

      Delete
    2. @FT, I don't think it takes a strong secondary to blanket our WRs, but otherwise agree

OL plays too high, and there's no DAWG among them; Harbs & staff recruited 4stars but didn't develop them to replace the NC run (like Wisconsin used to). They coached around that Saturday, and may have something ... good news is, Portal & HS Receivers will want to play in an offense with Bryce

Link has never played guard before, but my hope for next year is, Haywood gets one Guard spot, Guanara or Portal at Center, Sprague & either Babaloa or Portal at Tackle, and then Link can train at Guard starting January (or Portal)

      Delete
    3. Cohesion is so valuable on OL and continuity can help. For 2026 would be ideal if Sprague and Norton hold down the right side. Link stays on the left side (guard or tackle) depending on best fit and battle between Frazier/Haywood/Babaloa for the other starting spot.

At center you've got Guarana all lined up to take over but if there's an impact Portal addition this might be the spot to look. But Moore's approach ain't Harbaugh so don't count on it.

This (2025) was really the year to add a portal OT but supply was limited, cost was high, and Michigan chose to invest in the high school tackles instead. ROI should start showing up in 2026. If not...

      Delete
    4. Cohesion is absolutely valuable. But we've seen what happens when we assume guys are lined up: Persi, Gentry, Anderson, Crippen, ElHadi, Efobi(!), etc ... Getting guys to beat or push them is critical of running SMASH as our identity
*and we've seen OU get guys from HS and ... N.Texas to stand up to Wink's D. Ditto last year with Jedd Fish and his patch work OL

It won't be elite, but our bigger problem is coaching. Too high, too many whiffs, and not caving in the opposing DL (Haywood did in garage time)

Portal priorities at this moment are WR, OL and DL. Start the tampering early

      Delete
    5. Fair point about assumptions but these are the guys producing right now. Sprague, Link, Norton are young(ish) and playing well. That's different than Persi, Gentry who were passed over like Crippen. By the guys above. Anderson was pure hype from insiders. Efobi was less hyped than Anderson. None of them were starters for significant periods of time.

Nobody is saying you don't want competition to push people. But you want Babaloa pushing Sprague and Gach pushing Norton. Nothing wrong with adding portal pieces but the next impact starter Sherrone adds will be the first (Priebe committed to Harbaugh).

Big portal additions cost money and you need to use it wisely. Seems like DL will be the priority but too soon to say. Long way to Sept 2026.

      Delete
    6. Producing? Producing what? Isn't OL - and how Sherrone is managing it - your biggest gripe?

I mean, I understand why I don't agree with you, but it's definitely more fun when you don't agree with you

Note, the last time you were confident about guys we had "lined up" was with the "playmakers" at WR ... oh, and the QB situation after we won the NC

Also note, you didn't like that Moore invested in Haynes, who now leads the conference in rushing

Probably best to take an early L here

      #EMPTYHANDED

NOT WORRYING ABOUT THINGS THAT ARE IRRELEVANT (LACK OF PLAYMAKERS AT RECEIVER IN 24) IS NOT CONFIDENCE IN THE POSITION. ANOTHER FAAAAAAAAAAANTASY!
THE TRUTH IS THE STATEMENT WAS THAT WR WASN'T THE PROBLEM -- AND IT WASN'T.
      #IWASRIGHT
      #HIU

OL IS SHOWING IMPROVEMENT RELATIVE TO LAST YEAR. SOME OF THAT IS CRIPPEN SETTLING IN BUT MOSTLY IT'S GUYS WITH MULTIPLE YEARS OF ELIGIBILITY LEFT AFTER THIS YEAR (SPRAGUE, NORTON, LINK). DOES THAT REMOVE QUESTIONS ABOUT SHERRONES APPROACH ON OL DEVELOPMENT - NO IT DOES NOT. NO SIGNS OF SMASH YET. NO RETURN ON 5$$$$$$ RECRUITS YET.

IS IT ENOUGH TO QUESTION IF WE NEED TO PRIORITIZE PORTAL FROM OL IN 26 - YES IT IS!

      #HIU

SEEING THIS IS A CONFLICT IS ANOTHER FAAAAAAAAAAANTASY!

    16. IS 80% WIN PROBABILTY COUNT AS AN 'EVEN CHANCE'?

NO. AND YOU KNOW IT. HOLD UP YOUR L!

YOU TRIED TO MOVE THE GOAL POSTS FROM A TOSS UP (THE BET I OFFERED YOU, WITH AMPLE SPACE ACROSS 7 POINTS).

YOU CONTINUE TO DO YOU. DUCK DODGE AND DEFLECT. YOU COULD JUST MAN UP AND ADMIT. 'YEAH I PROBABLY OVERSTATED IT IN THE MOMENT. I HAD AN EMOTIONAL REACTION TO MY TEAM LOSING'. BUT NAH....YOU CAN'T DO IT! YOU SAY DUMB STUFF AND THEN GET CALLED OUT AND YOU WONT BACK IT UP.

      BETME!
