Grand Rapids (MI) Kenowa Hills running back Lundon Hampton committed Michigan on Thursday. He picked the Wolverines over offers from Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, and others.
Hampton is listed at 6'2", 195 lbs. As a junior in 2025, he ran for 1,266 yards, had 588 receiving yards, and scored 26 total touchdowns.
Michigan was one of the first major programs to recruit him primarily as a running back, and Hampton becomes the second RB in the 2027 class alongside four-star Tyson Robinson.

Hampton is being recruited to Michigan as a running back despite being rather tall at 6'2". He has a powerful - if bowlegged - slashing running style that is somewhat reminiscent of Hassan Haskins's high school highlights. Hampton has good top-end speed, shows some impressively sharp cuts for a player his size, and can run east-west more than most bigger backs. I like his ability to take on indirect contact and redirect with good acceleration. He also shows nice ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
A versatile player - a.k.a. a standout athlete at a small-ish school - Hampton plays running back, linebacker, cornerback, and slot corner for his high school team. He seems a little too heavy-footed when playing defense to end up in the defensive backfield, but there's a chance he could bulk up some and end up playing linebacker. His change of direction skills and angles are not great in coverage, but those could possibly be improved if he were to focus entirely on one position.
Overall, I think Hampton is a solid, underrated pickup and could develop into a Hassan Haskins/Ty Isaac-type player. I don't think Hampton is quite as powerful as Haskins, but he's stronger than Isaac through contact while offering some of the same pass receiving skills. Interestingly, Michigan has recruited a couple of tall running backs in the 2026 and 2027 classes in Jonathan Brown and now Hampton.
Michigan has never had a player from Kenowa Hills. This is now the second running back in the 2027 class, where Hampton joins Tyson Robinson.
Here's the potential depth chart when Hampton arrives:
- Jordan Marshall (Sr.)
- Savion Hiter (So.)
- Bryson Kuzdzal (RS Sr.)
- Micah Ka’apana (RS Jr.)
- Donovan Johnson (RS So.)
- Jonathan Brown (So.)
- Lundon Hampton (Fr.)
- Tyson Robinson (Fr.)
