Giles Jackson, Ex-Wolverine

Michigan wide receiver Giles Jackson has entered the transfer portal. Jackson went through a surgery this off-season after his second year in a Wolverines uniform.

A member of the class of 2019, I gave Jackson a TTB Rating of 75 (LINK) and he ended up as a 76.

Hit the jump for more.

Jackson was not a huge factor on the offensive side of the ball, but he was a threat in the kickoff return game, where he had two career return touchdowns (Maryland in 2019, Rutgers in 2020). Altogether, he averaged 26.4 yards/return in his career.

For his career, he caught 24 passes for 309 yards (12.9 yards/catch) and 1 touchdown, and he rushed the ball 12 times for 74 yards (6.2 yards/attempt) and 1 touchdown.

Rumors abounded this off-season that Jackson had played his final game in Ann Arbor, and that finally came to fruition. He was not as heavily involved in Michigan's offense as he should have been - from a football perspective - and the Wolverines failed to use his talents effectively. Ultimately, you have to have the right quarterback and game planning mentality to use someone like Jackson effectively.

Michigan now has 87 scholarship players lined up to play in the fall (LINK). Jackson is the fourth player to transfer from that 2019 class, joining LB Charles Thomas, C Zach Carpenter, and RB Zach Charbonnet.

  1. This is a bummer to me but who can really blame him. After getting PT at running back as a freshman (and looking plenty dangerous in that role) he got shifted to full-time WR and wasn't heavily utilized. Missed opportunity.

    1. LOL. Only you would latch on to Jackson's 0.77 rushing attempts per game and make that the main point of the discussion.

    2. Was I latching on to his rushing attempts? Or is that you projecting your narrow view of RBs?

FWIW I think Michigan has plenty of RBs and moving Giles to fulltime WR made sense given the roster. I just liked the playmaking that he exhibited as a RB in 2019 and in high school. I wouldn't be surprised if his next landing spot finds a way to use him better, including some backfield looks.

  2. I remember the great kick return he had against Alabama.
I think he and Sainristil should both have been used much more the last 2 years. Maybe Josh Gattis doesnt really know how to do that. Im sorry to say it.

    1. Altogether, I have been unimpressed by Gattis. Despite his #speedinspace mantra, I do not see him consistently putting his speediest guys in space. I was expecting more of a Penn State-style offense that took advantage of a running QB and a slot threat in KJ Hamler, but the QB's aren't running much and they're not taking advantage of the slots.

Penn State in 2017 had four guys with 50+ catches, and Michigan in 2019 had...zero.

    2. I don't know how Gattis survived being replaced thi off season. Although, I still have a hunch the new QB coach that was brought in the the Ravens is the next OC in waiting. If the offense isnt running well I'm thinking, well maybe hoping, a quick move will be mafe to let Gattis go, and put the new guy in. JJ McCarthy is too big of a talent to put him 8nto an offense that is run by a guy that is not ready for prime time.

  3. Wasted talent. This is the kind of kid at Rutgers, Maryland & NW that frustrates defenses

I would have like to see him moved around more, to force a mismatch ... but that would be speed in space
