2021 Ex-Wolverine Updates: Week Zero

I'm calling this Week Zero because if Michigan isn't playing, then has the football season really started?

FORMER PLAYERS

RB Zach Charbonnet (UCLA): Charbonnet was third on the team in rushing attempts (6), but he led the team in yardage (106 yards), touchdowns (3), and rushing average (17.7). That rushing average was boosted by a 46-yard touchdown on which he broke several tackle attempts. Here are all three of his scores:

Hit the jump for more.

P Will Hart (San Jose State): Hart punted 2 times for 80 yards (40.0 yards/attempt) in a 45-14 win over Southern Utah.

WR Oliver Martin (Nebraska): Martin caught 6 passes for 103 yards and 1 touchdown, leading the team in all three categories, in a 30-22 loss to Illinois.

QB Brandon Peters (Illinois): Peters was 3/4 for 35 yards and got sacked 2 times for -15 yards before leaving early in a 30-22 win over Nebraska. On the second sack, Peters got crushed, landing on his left shoulder and finishing the game on the sideline in a sling.

RB O'Maury Samuels (New Mexico State): Samuels ran 9 times for 28 yards and caught 2 passes for 10 yards in NMSU's 30-3 loss to UTEP.

  1. ZC may have been the most talented back on our roster, but still not the best fit. HH can create, and with our inconsistent offense & OL issues, he is the better fit

Peters still "looks" good, but cannot move an offense with any consistency

Samuels? I expected better, but oh well

  2. Oliver Martin has always intrigued me. He was supposed to be some kind of route-running receiver savant, but has instead become a vagabond. I predict he's going to have a somewhat dreary time at Nebraska because I don't expect them to be very good this year.

  3. Martin coming out of nowhere! Or perhaps better to say everywhere. Regardless, good for him.

  4. The mother of UCLAs QB is a Michigan alum. The sent a funny tweet during the game, well some won't think it's funny I guess. She was watching Zach Charbonnet, and said Thank you@Michigan

  5. I think talent is mishandled at Michigan. Even Brandon Peters and Dylan McCaffrey were obviously better than Joe Milton. Great players leave Michigan. DPJ and Nico left early to get out.

    1. I'm not so sure that Brandon Peters is better than Joe Milton. Nico Collins did very well at Michigan, and I don't think he left early to get out at all. I think he loved Josh Gattis and Gattis loved him. I just think Collins wanted to get away from the COVID threat/uncertainty in 2020.

    2. Nico disappeared under Gattis. I have trouble believing he loved Gattis. That just doesn't jibe.
Brandon Peters has far more accomplishments than Milton. And he has a beautiful pass. I have always thought his throws looked like pro passes, because of the touch and uncanny accuracy. Some QBs just have that. Milton just has a mostly inaccurate fastball. Is Peters fragile? Yes. But even with that, he has accomplished more in real games than Milton.

I'll just leave it all at that, because I hate arguing.

    3. Nico disappeared under Gattis?

2017 (Pep Hamilton as OC): 0.8 catches per game
2018 (Pep Hamilton as OC): 2.9 catches per game
2019 (Josh Gattis as OC): 3.1 catches per game

I guess he disappeared in 2020 as in opting out, so maybe you're right...

    4. Yes, he did disappear. The year before he had no drops. He was no where near that good under Gattis. And he didn't even return the next year.
