2021 Michigan vs. Northwestern Awards

Let's see more of this guy on offense . . . Andrel Anthony. Anthony has better speed than I thought he had coming out of high school, and he showed some playmaking ability on Saturday, squeezing a few yards out of what seemed to be doomed to be a big chunk loss on an end around. Maybe he's not ready to be a big-time contributor, but I think he should earn a few more snaps.

Hit the jump for more.

Let's see less of this guy on offense . . . Daylen Baldwin. I know everybody was excited about the new face at wide receiver, a guy who earned Ohio State and Michigan offers as an FCS transfer from Jacksonville State in the off-season. And that excitement wasn't totally unwarranted, as Baldwin has turned in a couple deep touchdowns this season. But Baldwin doesn't have the greatest instincts as a wide receiver, and he does some of the little things wrong - missing blocks, route running, dropping passes, etc. He's no doubt a physical specimen, but he's far from a finished product. The problem is that Michigan doesn't have a ton of depth at receiver, so Baldwin pretty much has to be out there, but if Anthony or Roman Wilson or A.J. Henning can take some snaps or targets, that might not be a bad thing.

Let's see more of this guy on defense . . . D.J. Turner II. Turner started the game at cornerback in place of Gemon Green, and he performed well with 3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 interception (returned for 23 yards). He was also called for a bogus pass interference penalty.

Let's see less of this guy on defense . . . Gemon Green. I suppose if Turner needs to get on the field more, that means Green might need to get on the field less. I don't think Green has played terribly poorly this season, but he's allowed some receptions where he's had pretty good coverage but got beaten by a few inches one way or the other. On the plus side, perhaps Michigan is developing three solid corners who might be able to stand up against better passing offenses than what the Wolverines have faced so far.

Play of the game . . . D.J. Turner II's interception. The ball got tipped in the air on a hitch route, at which point he tipped it to himself before grabbing it and then returning it 23 yards.

MVP of the game . . . Hassan Haskins. Haskins's numbers (23 carries, 110 yards, 2 touchdowns) were not quite on par with Blake Corum's (19 carries, 119 yards, 2 touchdowns), but Haskins showed some great vision and balance over and over again. This award could go to either guy, but I liked the way Haskins pushed the pile and gained yardage after contact, especially on his second touchdown run, when he very easily could have hit the ground before crossing the goal line but stretched nicely to get in the endzone.
