  1. Rodriguez is starting out well. I don't know if he's refound his groove, or if the competition so far had been weak. Time will tell.

    1. Time will tell. I think Rodriguez is a great offensive coach, and he's probably able to coach circles around a lot of the guys at the lower (FCS) levels. So I expect him to have success.

In my opinion, his issue has always been character (his own and that of his players) and a lack of commitment to defense. I think if you gave Rodriguez a talented group of players, he could make good things happen at the FBS level, too. He just had that WVU mentality and took too many undersized, undertalented, questionable character guys. When Roy Roundtree (not questioning his character) and Martavious Odoms (ditto) are the most utilized guys in your receiving corps, for example, you're not working with a whole lot.

I think Rodriguez could make a pretty good Big Ten offense out of McCarthy, Corum/Edwards, All/Schoonmaker, and Johnson/Wilson/Bell/Henning, etc.

    2. Rodriguez' problem was defense. That's it, on his end at least - the support wasn't there around him but that's another topic. You can understand his thinking - Michigan has a good defense, I'll focus on my new offense - but it was a mistake. The defense needed more attention not less. He shifted later but it was too late.

I don't buy the character argument - Michigan had too many Grade A character guys that he recruited in his time and I don't think the off field issues spiked or anything like that.

I also don't buy the undersized argument - his offense used slot receivers way more than the old system so he needed to recruit those guys (and he already had bigger outside WRs in Stonum, Mathews, Hemingway). He recruited big receivers anyway but the focus on smaller guys was understandable. No Nico Collins or Devin Funchess types but guys like Bell and Wilson are the same types RR needed to add.

  2. If you're getting beat up for time, this is a fun post, but is not at the top of my favorites list. If we get to vote.

Having said that, let me say, "You go Phillip Paea!!! Shoulda been a guard.

    1. Worthy could not be covered by Alabama. I think Saban needs to fire his DB coach. That guy sucks!

    2. I agree with this: if you find yourself with little time to attend to posts here, then this topic is one that can go to save you some time. Of course, if you *like* to do this, then by all means, have fun! :-)

At this point what I appreciate the most are the game previews, and the game recaps.

    3. These posts are like the Costco rotisserie chicken. I may not make a lot of money from these posts, but it's the kind of thing that makes people want to come back. I think people appreciate the wide breadth of knowledge I can share about former players/recruits, so if I'm going to keep up with these types of things myself, I might as well publish my research.

That being said, sometimes these posts get whittled down by the end of the season once there are suspensions, guys entering the transfer portal, season-ending injuries, etc. It takes more time at the beginning of the year than by the end.

    4. Again, I like these posts and do look for my favorite guys like Paea, but I'm not waiting for them.

I go to On3 for recruiting, as I like EJ Holland's little pieces and the fact that he's traveling to see games. As an aside, I thought it interesting that he came out with some criticism of Mike Hart's recruiting this past week. So, from my standpoint, you could back down from recruiting news and I might not even notice.

I like MGoBlog for the UFRs and Seth's analysis of stuff in general along with the Bball coverage.

I like Space Coyote for opponent analyses.

I like most everything about this site except the occasional random returns to hell you seemingly feel compelled to wallow through periodically ... failed recruiting classes analyzed etc.

But, I'm gonna roll through here early pretty much every morning regardless of what else I have going on. Hell, I roll through here daily even when you're going days without getting anything posted. Then of course, I gotta worry about scanning the obits looking for some former Michigan football player and Glee Club member who was a possibly likely QBs that changed positions and subsequently became a football coach and coordinator at some very likely southeastern Michigan high school.

    5. UMHoops is good for bball coverage. Mgoblog doesn't know what they are talking about with the bball team (except for recruiting which the newer guy does well and with passion.) Bball is 3rd string there and I think it shows. Maybe they don't know football that well either but at least they invest time in detailed breakdowns and try to learn scheme and all that. Mgoblog does a lot of stuff very well but basketball is not one of them. I actually like their recruiting coverage because some of these other sites are just too into the weeds and play up drama to generate clicks.

  3. May be a lot of work, but as the consumer, I appreciate the one stop shop full of ex-wolverine updates

    This series is a keeper

    1. Oh, I love this series. The thing is whether Thunder is so slammed for time that *something* has to give. So a question: if this is a keeper, and *something* has to go, what would your vote be?

    2. I definitely appreciate the feedback. Personally, I think this is a better use of my time than continuing with recruiting posts during the season. The truth is that now that Michigan is offering ~350 recruits in every cycle, tracking them all is kind of a burden and we rarely latch on to any individual recruit the way we used to back in the early 2000s or even the early 2010s. When Michigan was offering 150 guys, every single offer was seemingly DO OR DIE.

Now it's like, "Oh, okay, Michigan offered a 52nd receiver this cycle? Yawn. Wake me up on signing day."

  4. I like the series. I always learn something because it's tough to track so many players.

FWIW, I get much more out of the ex-players than the ex-commits. I follow the team closely and have a lot of interest in our transfers - particularly those who played for multiple years at Michigan and had big roles (e.g., Charbonnet, Milton, even Filiaga). But if you ask me something about Leonard Taylor or Tim Baldwin I would struggle to tell you anything about them. Being 'committed' to Michigan really doesn't mean much anymore now that decommitments and withdrawn offers are typical. I find the ex-coaches part much more interesting than that and we have a whole bunch of assistants out there (e.g., Gattis, Warriner, Nussmeir) that I have more interest and attachment in than guys we briefly recruited. Worthy is probably a special case because he actually enrolled but guys like Chase Lasater were never Wolverines.

    1. Agreed about the ex-commits, to be honest. It used to seem like a bigger deal when Michigan lost a commit, but now those things happen all the time. It really waters down the seeming importance.

It also helps that Michigan is being successful right now. Fans aren't so envious of a defensive end making a couple sacks or a lineman becoming a starter elsewhere because Michigan is winning 10 games a year, sending guys to the NFL, etc.

Winning cures everything, and all that.

    2. I never followed recruiting too closely, even when offers were a bigger deal. That said, there's so many other places offering recruiting info, I'd think that would be the easiest to cut out

Then again, TTB traffic might get good traffic on recruiting posts, making it more worthwhile

    3. Yeah it helps that we have Wilson and Zinter so we are not too jealous of Worthy and Ekiyor.

I still would have liked to have gotten that Georgia LB decommit, but I can't even think of his name at the moment so I guess that says something.

  5. Xavier Worthy had a really cool 46 yard catch.
